The Highlander Holiday Shortcuts stories are now revealed! Wahoo!

This is what I wrote:

A Dance Told in Six Parts
~10K words
Gen, Duncan/Methos/Amanda

This was a lot of fun to write. It's 90% silliness. A lot of hand-waivey plotting haha. :D

Many many thanks to [personal profile] raine for the beta!

I had been composing a post, in my head, that I had entitled "complain complain complain" but it was full of me complaining and I got bored with it, and it never got out of the internal dialogue stage of post-making.

So, there's this post instead. Full of nonsense.

1. We are now four days out from CA: Civil War and I remain about 98% spoiler free! \o/ Basically I don't watch TV and only squint at tumblr. None of my real life friends cares one iota about the MCU. Although there was that one time I was at dinner with a bunch of friends and someone brought up the CW trailer and I was like GOTTA GO TO THE BATHROOM BYE.

2. 'Course I probably just jinxed myself.

3. Today at the car dealership, on some morning talk show, a couple of the MCU actors were there promoting the movie and I was like "oh no you don't" and had my headphones on in a jiffy. But I was momentarily struck by how weird it was to watch these particular actors being interviewed. And then I realized that I had gotten so used to seeing them only in gif format on tumblr, where that was more normal than regular video. OY.

4. One of the things I wanted to complain about was the dearth of Sam/Steve fiction out there. Why isn't there more? WHY? Feel free to rec me some Steve/Sam, although I feel like I've been pretty thorough in my searches. Preferably not also as part of Steve/Bucky or another pairing because of reasons. Not that I don't love them all, because I DO, I really do.

4.a. I admit I have picky tastes.

5. Also if anyone has any good recommendations for Steve/Thor? I tried checking out the pairing tag on AO3 but got dispirited at what seemed to be only cracky/gimicky type stories all wildly ooc, but maybe I missed something.

5.a Also, also, I've come to accept that I will always be out of step with fandom at large -- I only play in a fandom sandbox if I love canon and it seems to me that most everyone else plays in a fandom sandbox *despite* canon.

6. I rewatched all of Star Wars, from the prequels to Clone War to the original trilogy to TFA. And this is what I learned: a) Obi-Wan Kenobi is my favorite character, b) the Emperor has got some serious long con game skills yo. Like, the man has patience. c) having the force is more trouble than it's worth, d) Clone Wars is by far the better, more comprehensive part of the stories pre-original trilogy, e) JJ Abrams should not be trusted with science. not even with fantasy science. I know there's hand wavy explanation for why everyone in every system can see the starkiller destroy that one system but it's dumb. At least the trilogy kept to it's own logic, but TFA is kind of all over the place. f) but even with that, which honestly pulls me out of the story every time, TFA is a lot of fun if only for Rey and Finn. And sometimes Poe.

7. I've started writing a new book and... you guys, writing is hard.

8. I am deeply amused by the billboard around town for Neighbors 2 (and jeez, was there a Neighbors 1???) because it's like EXACTLY the same as the billboards all around town for CA Civil War. EXACTLY THE SAME. Honestly I'd almost prefer the plot of Neighbors 2.... haha. Okay not really. But kind of yeah.

Wow that was kind of complainy after all. :/

Yay, the Highlander Holiday Shortcuts reveal went up yesterday. :D Go and check it out.

This is what I wrote:

Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood
Duncan/Methos, the Four Horsemen
Adult, ~7,500 words
written for [personal profile] amand_r in the 2011 Highlander Holiday Shortcuts Festival.

Summary: "I leave you alone for ten minutes and find you directing troops into battle," said MacLeod. "Well," said Methos, "I came out here to find out what all the fuss was about, and, you know." Methos finished with a shrug and a wave of his hand, as if to say this sort of thing was a natural hazard of his day-to-day life.

Great big thank yous to [personal profile] killabeez for hand holding and betaing, and also to [personal profile] unovis for reading and betaing.

Yay! Authors have been revealed for the [livejournal.com profile] hlh_shortcuts and so now I can jump up and down and point people to my story.

This was a first for me, for many reasons -- first crossover, first non-D/M (except for the wee little Duncan/May-Ling I wrote years ago)(although I kind of cheated because it's heavy on the Duncan & Methos friendship), first time writing Amanda for longer than a cameo. It was a lot of fun, and also difficult. *g*

The Manuscript
Highlander/Dresden Files
Methos, Amanda, Harry Dresden, Bob, Duncan MacLeod, OCs
Genish Pre-slash or Slashy Gen (Methos/Harry)
13200+ words

The Manuscript (link goes to community, posted in 2 parts, all parts linked). Or you can read it on the HL Archive here.

Anyone know of good Dresden Files communities for posting?

Quick notes for anyone interested: )

Because I have a total hang-up about riding with my feet out of the stirrups, I jumped into the bareback class today. It was so awesome, I luv it. Of course, I was on the most wonderfulest, steadiest, loveliest mare (actually, at first I was on a new-to-the-barn pony, but the sweet pony was lame, so I had to switch), who is just a doll so it was really easy. Walking, sitting trot, posting trot sans stirrups, even two-point (ow. lol) and then a wee smidge of cantering. I want to do it again! But will probably flip flop between my normal english class and bareback, since they're on the same day. Each time I start to wonder why I am spending so much time and money with all this horsey business, I have an amazing class and feel rejuvenated. Also, my Western classes are so much fun, too. English is still a challenge... but I like the challenge.

whee!

~~~
In other news, I'm trying not to panic about my hlh_shortcut story. I'm still frolicking with Starsky & Hutch, who are my new boyfriends, we're totally in the honeymoon lovey dovey stage. heh. And, I'm hella excited about my yuletide fandom, like for serious. I <3's it.
Got bucked off TWICE yesterday (riding a horse named Bart. The name should have been a clue *g*) Flipped out attempting the right lead canter. First time we didn't get to the canter he just reared and then bucked. Then I got back on, started the right lead, went for a little bit, and then whammo. I was so annoyed. I'm not riding that horse any more; I really hope they don't assign him to me again, although he's decent at the walk/trot. Tweaked my hand it's a bit swollen and bruised, but I still rode today in the Dressage Show (on my pal Scotty, what a trooper) and did... okay. But not great. My hand hurt, so I think I should get a gold star for not canceling. lol.
I also participated in the group equitation class, which just ended up being me and another junior, but it was cool (and I enjoyed it better than the test).
Draft of story done omg yay! WHEE. Took friday off from work and just barreled through. Now editing.
Well, it's still morning *here* and that's what counts.
-- I got up at the asscrack of dawn this morning (i.e. 6 am) to have an extra riding lesson this week because I have my second dressage show on Sunday. It was good lesson, over all, but I've been in this weird place with horseback riding for the last few weeks in that I kind of really need to take it to the next level because as it is right now I'm riding once a week, if that, and not really advancing as much as I'd like, but 1) money is a problem, and 2) time is another big problem. I don't have much extra time and as it is right now I feel like I'm at the equestrian center constantly since I started student working (which I really do like, but it's exhausting). Bah. I don't have a solution for this. When am I scheduled to win the lottery again? Someone update my calendar.
-- I was doggedly continuing with Primeval series 3 but have stalled out three episodes before the end. The last one I watched had do people care about spoilers? )
-- I am a disk and a half from finally finishing the audiobooks version of Outlander. Christ that's a long book.
-- Cousin of Mine came over last weekend and we watched some more Doctor Who. Series 3 up through "The Family of Blood". (I unapologetically *ADORE* "42", so I was happy just to watch that episode). I would have loved to have ended with "Blink", just to send him home jumping from shadows, but alas the night grew too long. After months of not paying attention to anything New!Who, I was like, "oh. you again. all right. I do like you, you daft tv show you."
-- Accidentally discovering the magic of Netflix's instant streaming, I started watching Leverage season 1 (I'm up to The Two-Horse Job. Don't spoil me!) I love it like pumpkin pie. I was skeptical, since it looked like a Hustle rip off, and I loved that show and miss Mickey Stone a great deal, but I quite frankly didn't stand a chance once the team got together. lol. In which I compare Hustle to Leverage a bit and then comment on stuff, as you do. )
-- (sekret to killa. I'm almost done! No really! Maybe I'll even finish tonight! Okay, okay, tomorrow is more likely, but a girl can dream.)
-- Ever lose complete track of time sense and weather sense when writing? In my current story, I have no idea what time of the year it is any more. d'oh. I gotta go back and track it. sigh.
-- So ti ti zzzzzzzz. Why did I schedule an early morning riding lesson on the same day I have to work from 6pm to 9:30pm?? I'm going to be a zombie.
Thing 1: Tonight I worked late at the stables, watering horses and tidying tack. By the time it was dark, you could see the glow of the fire over the other side of the mountain range. It was rather pretty, and I tried to take a picture but my camera phone sucks and it didn't really come out. The fire is still very far from where the equestrian center is, so there's no danger, but it's closer than where I live, so I hadn't seen the way it glowed at night.
Thing 2: writing writing writing. still not done. need more free time. long story is long. *kicks it* Very close to finishing. I keep saying that in the hopes that one day it will happen. Actually, I only have about 5000 more words to go, the ending is nigh upon me. or something. I just need a night where I'm not busy. Come on, world, stop being so distracting.
Thing 3: Finished Primeval, series 2. dinasaur chase-y chase )
I'm home from VVC! Which was wonderful, as usual, and I had a blast and got to see all of my favorite people although there is never enough time to see and hang out with people enough. sadness. Con report perhaps tomorrow.
Hey, so I came home to find out I was wait-listed for the Djerassi Artisit-In-Residence Program! I'm rather ridiculously pleased. :D I mean, I would have LOVED being selected (although overwhelmed) but I kind of had no expectation and rather thought I'd get a rejection, and applied mostly because I love the entire concept of artists-in-residence programs and it's kind of a dream of mine to experience something like it. For Djerassi, over 700 apply and 60 get selected for month long residencies throughout 2010, and I'm on "alternate status" for my chosen discipline (Literature). The other disciplines are Choreography, Music Composition, Visual Arts, and Media Arts/New Genres. :D :D :D yay!
eta: here is a little video about the program.
