I love the Dresden books. I got into them because I loved the series so much, and I found that:
a) I like the Harry in the series better than I would have liked the Harry in the books, but since I met the Harry in the series first... I am not sure I ever really met the Harry in the books. If that makes sense. Anyway, I love Harry!
b) I like Bob in the series way better than Bob in the books. But Bob in the books still has his charm.
c) I like Murphy in the show a LOT, and yet I still like Murphy in the books better. Possibly just because she had more time to kick ass, and she used it for a whole lot of ass-kicking. =)
d) There are a lot of things to love in the books that never made it into the series. There are a lot of PEOPLE in the books to love that never made it into the series. And not-people too, for that matter.
e) The books struck me the way the series struck you. The first book is a hard read, mainly because it's such an easy read; there's barely any there there. But again, it is charming, and as I continued through the books I found myself not only more charmed but also more involved - Butcher's writing got better, and his stories got more complex and layered. Though, I mean. You know, for dodgy harry-sue urban fantasy. =) Also, points for Chicago!!
ps - why yes, I have given this a lot of thought - why do you ask!?
