50 things meme.
I'm surprised I actually did this.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Time in School are:
1. I was a painfully shy child. So shy I would often be reduced to sheer panic, uncontrollable shaking, and a squeaky voice, whenever I had to get in front of a class to do a presentation. I still get stage fright, but not nearly as bad as when I was a kid.
2. Despite this, or because of it, I auditioned and got accepted to the theatre dept. of Arts. H.S. . It was just like Fame, only without the spontaneous choreographed dance numbers.
3. My parents took me out of H.S. (both my regular school and my Arts. High) to do extensive traveling throughout Asia and Australia. Consequently, I nearly failed a year, but I managed to raise my grades and end up with no less than a C in Geometry, I think.
4. I went to a pretty rowdy Junior High, where there was brutal fights nearly every day during lunch.
5. Around 6th grade, I got mysteriously chosen (I still don't know how it happened) for this special accelerated smart kids John Hopkins program. With Saturday school. And a two week away camp in the summer, where we had even more school. There were two groups, one for English and one for Math. I was in the Math group! Me! I still do addition with my fingers. It's a mystery, I tell you. The away camp was fun, though. Full of the usual teen dramas and things.
Five Things You May Not Know About the Job (Jobs) I Have (or Had) are:
1. My first job out of H.S. was for a Diagnostic Research company. Read: those pesky people who call you and ask you to answer a bunch of questions. I hated it. To pass the time and alleviate the drudgery I would amuse myself by making top ten lists. Top ten favorite actors. Top ten actors with the best eyes (arms. legs. etc etc. ) Top ten favorite characters with the best eyes (arms. legs. etc. etc. -- with different answers from the Top ten actors, strangely enough). Top ten favorite movies. Top ten favorite literary characters. You get the picture. I was there for two months.
2. My first job out of College #1 was for Marriot as one of there room service servers. I am, without a doubt, the worst server imaginable. The trays were way to heavy for me. And I always forgot the ketchup. Or the salt and pepper. Or the jam. And had to go running back to the kitchen to get it. And I hated my supervisor. Not to mention the Horrible Very Disturbing Cockroach Incident, which doesn't really need to be elaborated on. I also lied when I was hired because I knew I was moving at the end of the summer, and thus only lasted there two months. That was my last food service job.
3. I discovered slash while working as a temp in NYC. Ever since then, fanfic and fandom have been irrevocably tied to work in my mind. Work is where I do my most reading and participating. Bad habit, but whatchagonnado?
4. I don't last at jobs for long. I do better if I'm there part time, but normally, I'm just too much of a gypsy. And I end up deeply loathing the very notion that someone, who's paying me mind you, has the sheer audacity to ask me to do something, that's you know, my job. What do you mean I have to answer the phone? What do you mean I have to process these, or file those, or work on this spreadsheet. Is there some reason you can't do it? It's like they expect me to drop everything and do what they say? ...
5. Despite this, I'm *loved* at jobs. I never have difficulty finding work. As a temp, people asked for me back all the time. Employers were always impressed by my "skills" (hah!). It would be funny, except for the fact that I never get work doing something I actually love.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Online Life are:
1. When I first found out about fan fiction it was through the old ASCEM Trek Archive (which I believe no longer exists as I knew it. There's trekiverse.org, however, which assumed the old archive). I could tell from the headers of the stories that there were these things called newsgroups and usenet, but I had no idea what they were, how to find them, who all these lovely people were that apparently all knew each other and where somehow conversing *somewhere*. It was like, I could see through a window into a party, but couldn't find the door to go in and play!
2. I did, eventually, figure it out. But it took me nearly a year of reading the archive, and desperately searching for any clue on what the heck a newsgroup was before I actually managed to join the ASCEM mirror listserv. I've since become much more savvy about how the internet works and computers and, well, everything. Fandom is a great school. :)
3. I tend compulsively refresh my flist and my email for anything new.
4. However, earlier this week I had over 1200 unread emails in my inbox. All list mail. I've managed to get it down to just over 800. I also don't post that much on LJ and even less to my many lists. I really don't know what this says about me, other than I'm obviously wacked.
5. Despite my apparent email avoidance issues, I do tend to answer all personal email promptly. Mostly. :)
Five Things You May Not Know About Where I Live are:
1. Um... I live in LA. Coming up with five unknown things about LA is *hard*.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Core Personality are:
1. People often say things to me like "I thought you hated me." or they ask me if I'm mad at them or something like that, and I'm always, wah? I can't imagine I'm that foreboding or that standoffish, but I must be. It's something in my face, but honestly, I'm usually thinking of like the errands I have to run, or something I forgot to do, or really anything but them. *g*
2. However, I may get angry a lot. I may even seethe and loath and be mad as hell. But I very seldom actually show it. Or actually get so mad that I'll show it. It takes a great deal to get rise out of me, to actually get me enraged enough to yell and scream and, like, get physical. It has happened, however.
3.I'm super hyper aware of appearing to be too clingy or needy or insecure, especially with close friends. Even if I'm wildly clingy, needy, and insecure in actuality. I'll often have moments when I'm certain people are avoiding me or hate me or what have you. I'm usually too level headed to let myself *really* believe it, but I do tend to think that often.
4.With nearly every group of friends I have, online and offline, with like maybe one or two exceptions, I automatically fall into the "kid sister" slot. Even if I'm the oldest in the group. This is both deeply annoying and kinda nice. I don't know why. I'm even the older sibling, and it still happens.
5. I am always right, and no one ever believes me. :P
Five Things You May Not Know About My Home Life are:
1. I'm never at home.
2. If I'm home, I'm most likely working on the computer.
3. I'm a decent cook, but I don't cook much, and thus don't know how to cook. But when I do cook, it's usually good.
4. I'm compulsively clean about the kitchen, but I'm terrible about cleaning the bathroom.
5. I was a very messy kid, and I'm not much better as an adult. By messy, I mean, I don't put things away, so everything gets very cluttered. And then I get all fed up and do a mass cleaning and organize my sock drawer and rearrange everything. But then, two days later, all my clothing is back to being scattered all over the place.
Five Things You May Not Know that I Desperately Want are:
1. A puppy.
2. A house on the beach. And by on the beach I mean where the back door opens onto the beach and it's a short walk to the ocean.
3. To be taller. (grins at
cesperanza)
4. To learn to sail.
5. To have some measure of success doing the things I love.
Five Embarrassing Fannish Admissions I Have That You May Not Know are:
1. I have this very involved, elaborate, Star Trek Mary Sue fantasy that encompassed Next Gen and Voyager, and also Spock, and and.. I thankfully never actually wrote down. I can't bear to bring myself to describe it! It's too personal! *g* And also alarmingly very typically Mary Sue-ish. meep.
2. I don't actually feel this is embaressing (nor much of a secret), but I love Methos/f. A lot. I like Duncan/f as well, but not as much as M/f. I know, it's weird. I also love PotC het fic. Also, a lot. Elizabeth/anyone. And, for the love of Mike, if you have recs, please hand them over! (please?)
3. This is also not much of a secret (and also directly incongruous with much of my admissions about being a shy kid), before I really understood what I was doing, I happily read a fisting story I wrote out loud to a room full of relative strangers. Ah, good times.
4. I used to print and/or download fan fiction, almost compulsively, just in case the internet suddenly went *poof*, I would then have some smut to hang on to. Just in case.
5. I am pretty much deeply in the closet (not very effectively I might add, since all my RL friends have known me for so long, they know everything about me) about my inherent geekiness. And by geekiness I mean liking sci fi and genre shows, Star Trek, etc etc. I'm more comfortable admitting to writing porn and erotica then saying I'm a big Star Trek fan. I feel like such a hypocrite. *hangs head*
Five Things You May Not Know About What I Do in a Typical Day are:
1. I drink green tea every day.
2. I go to the gym anywhere from 2-6 times a week, depending.
3. Er, can't think of anything else even remotely interesting.
Five Things You May Not Know that are Really Important to My Character are:
1. I'm pretty loyal.
2. I'm a terrible decision maker. I waffle. A lot. Hem and haw. I can't decide!
3. I love buying clothes. I'm a good, quick shopper. In and out. I can't go into a store, especially one I like (that I can afford) and not walk out with something. It's like a compulsion. I have to buy! I can talk myself out of it, but I usually have to brace myself before going into a store with a "you will not buy anything today. you will not buy anything today" kind of chant over and over again. Strangely, however, I don't actually like shopping much. In the spend-all-day-going-to-stores-sense of the word. Spending so much time with the material world brings me down.
4. I'm pretty much a big space cadet. If I have to remember something, chances are I'll forget about it promptly after I remember it.
5. I'm terrible with money. I have no money management skills whatsoever. It's a wonder I manage to save anything at all.
Woo. That took all day. Interrupted by several meetings and a plethora of phone calls. And also lunch.

Oh, I think you should elaborate --

If you've ever ordered room service, you know that your food comes in this metal warmer dishes. You place a flat hot metal disk at the bottom and then the plate of food, and then the cover. Keeps your food nice and hot for you. As a room service server, part of your job is to get the order ready, which included preparing the warmer dishes for the food. So, I get an order, right. And I go to where we kept the warmer dishes, they're kept stacked one on top of the other in small towers, and I pick one up and a hundred million gazillian cockroaches go scurrying out. I let out an ear splitting shriek and dropped everything and run to the other side of the kitchen. I can still see it however, and smell it. Be thankful you don't know what a nest of cockroaches smells like.
What had happened was they'd fumigated the night before, and roaches, being the smart little fuckers they are, had all hidden underneath that one warmer dish, and it was just a matter of luck that it was I who managed to pick that particular one.
gah. *shivers*

2. Reading about cockroaches and fisting in quick succession = not good.
3. Puppy!! After my adorable visitor, I want a puppy, too.
4. I'm very happy that there wasn't much here I didn't already know about you, but it was lovely to read it anyway. *gloms you*

*g* Okay! We're clear! And I love you, too. Like I said, I'm really too level-headed as a person to let myself be so silly. I'll have a surge of insecurity, and then I'll be all, oh get over it, h.! heh. (this is probably very normal... I'm assuming *g*)
PUPPY!
love,
h.
