I have finished my hlh_shortcuts story \o/! Managed to hammer that puppy out over the thanksgiving holiday, which was something definitely to be thankful for haha. I think that was the first fan fiction I'd written in two years (say whut?). Those handsome immortals are as pesky as ever!

Went to see Intersteller -

I'm really good at remaining unspoiled when I want to be (or when I'm too busy to notice things) (and also I don't watch live tv much so no commercials) so the only thing j knew about this film is that it had something to do with space. Space is usually an easy sell for me so I wanted to see this. I loved last years Gravity.

Things:

~ took me a while to figure out it was the near future, but I liked that it wasn't so obvious. No strange little do dads or sleek computers with everyone still dressing the same. It looked pretty much just like today.

~ movies like this really illustrate how distant space travel still is. Especially with no funding.

~ there were a few terrifying moments in the film, but none so much as that parent/teacher conference scene. YIKES. Seriously, I'll take blight and near extinction over that kind of attitude about education and the mindless rewriting of history.

~ I question the limited view of humanity on earth this movie showed. What was happening in the cities? What about other countries? The movie was pretty dense as it is, so I get that they really couldn't show much more than what they did, but there wasn't even a casual reference.

~ I like hot shot pilots. I have a thing for them. :)

~ i really loved all the science and the physics involved and all the talk about the malleable nature of time, the theory of relativity. Much of it wizzed past my head, but I understood enough.

~ but then the characters would do something really dumb like go down to the first planet with the severe time distortion. WHY? If you have two other planets that are not more or less promising the this one would you even bother with the planet that is 7 years for every hour unless it's a last resort?? That should have crossed that planet off the list right away.

~ also, they may as well have just come out and called Mann 'that guy who's going to try to kill us all' because that was really obvious! Tell us one more time how he's the best of the best. Of course you have to have the iconic space suit fight

~ at first I was uncertain about TARS and CASE, but then by the end I wanted one of my own.

~ I was mostly on board for 90% of the movie. It got a little long in the middle, but that's ok. My one real complaint though was that the emotional pay off of him returning to his daughter was weird. She realized he didn't leave her on purpose when she figured out the watch and morse code thing, so she had her resolution, but he didn't really, until he miraculously survives and even more miraculously she's still alive for them to reunite, but then it was like 'hi dad, good to see you but now you have to go.' I don't know, it felt a little tacked on and rushed. I really loved that he went out to find Brand, but it felt kind of like Murph was rushing him out he door.

Am enjoying my X-File rewatch. I'm wondering if I want to try to read some MSR? Maybe? It was actually the very first fan fiction I read year and years ago, but I never read very extensively for the pairing or the fandom. Are their still recs somewhere from way back? I have no idea what the popular stories even were.
