He tilted his head. “Is that so hard to believe?”

There were always a few, the many things he could not change. He’d learned to live with the consequences of his actions. But she wasn’t asking about the big picture or those unalterable moments that were solidified in their past. She was asking about right here, right now. “No,” he said. “What about you?”

How many times has he replayed this scene? The young private, the forest path, the rusted gate. Steve and him. This last chance to tell him. He knows what’s about to happen. Why can’t he tell him? How many times has he tried to change how it ends? Maybe this time, he can get it right.

In other news... all right, I have at least 3 more stories I would love to get done before A4. I think I can reasonably get 2 of them done, and am opting for the steve/thor sequels to Starborn because I love it too much okay. Can I do it? CAN I DO IT? I don't know. I'm gonna need sleep at one point, and the days when I wrote nice short 3k stories seem to be in the past lol. Pray for me.
