Be sure to look at all of them, but the last one is my favorite.

My schedule has finally lined up well enough for me to participate in one of Pemberley.com's group reads. They go in rotation, and currently the group read is of Mansfield Park.

Mansfield Park is not my favorite of Austen's novels, but I would venture to say it is the more difficult, the least glossy, and in some ways the best in terms of complex characters. No one is very bad or very good in Mansfield Park. Particularly in light of my last post regarding strong female characters -- Mansfield Park is full of them. I think there is hardly a stronger (and more incredibly drawn) character than Mrs. Norris. What a bundle if issues.

I'm going to try and focus on Sir Thomas, actually, because I'm fascinated by his effect on all the women in the novel. I have this wild theory that Sir Thomas is what Fizwilliam Darcy would have been if not for Elizabeth.

Anyway, the group read is fun, although I must be careful, or else all I will do is read Austen and make little niggling points about random, obscure quotes from the text, instead of all the other hundreds of things I should be doing. *g*

~~~
In other wholly unrelated news, they've cast James Kirk in this new fangled movie.
I noticed first how blue his eyes are... *g* Must be from all those hours spent carefully describing Kirk's wonderously hazel eyes. lol.
It's been nearly two weeks since I posted last, and feels like months, actually. School started up again yesterday. blerg. I'm alive. Writing. Broke 50,000 words, so yay. :D
The meme from my last post interests me, and, as an exercise, I'm going to do it for a few more fandoms. just 'cause. Highlander, Lost, and Wiseguy are already covered.
The questions:
01. The first character I first fell in love with
02. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
03. The character everyone else loves that I don't
04. The character I love that everyone else hates
05. The character I used to love but don't any longer
06. The character I would shag anytime
07. The character I'd want to be like
08. The character I'd slap
09. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I despise
Paramount Home Entertainment said Thursday that complaints about the decision to add digital special effects to the high-definition DVD release of the original Star Trek series are fading.
"Once people started to see what it is, the knee-jerk reaction has died down and people are starting to get excited about it," Jason Hillhouse of New Wave Entertainment, which added the effects, told Home Media magazine. Ryan Adams of CBS DVD said that the addition of the special effects is "definitely appropriate." Indeed, he remarked, the show "screams out for it." The 10-disc set is scheduled to be released on Nov. 20, priced at $217.99, in the HD DVD (but not in the Blu-ray) format.
I'm more outraged at the price. $217.99! Are they even releasing it in regular DVD, I wonder. Lordy.
Also, they've cast a Spock for this new fangled movie of theirs. hrmph. :D Suddenly my icon is HYSTERICALLY FUNNY.
So, I rented this movie called Pastime the other day. It was on my netflix queue and it appeared at my home, and I was like, what are you, little movie? where do you come from? Turns out, William Russ is in it, and that's how it ended up on netflix queue and in my home. o.O
It was about baseball, or something, and I confess I didn't watch it with much scrutiny when WR wasn't on screen. And when he was on screen I kept being all bamboozled because his character was soooo sweet, just the nicest guy who's seen better days, at the end of his life, sort of thing. I was like, woah, were be my Roger! And then I watched Rache and Sandy's Life in the Balance vid, and all was well.
It reminded me how much I love Roger, and Wiseguy, though. *pets*
~~~

So, remembering my Roger Lococco love got me thinking about the kind of characters I seem to gravitate to. Here's a sampling: Roger Lococco, Duncan MacLeod, Jack Bauer.

One wonders if I have a latent death wish. *g*

Although, really, in comparison, Duncan MacLeod is, imo, safer then Roger or Jack. I mean, if I were to rank them in order of Least Dangerous to Most Dangerous it would go like this: Duncan, and then a tie for Roger and Jack.

This are the things one ponders just before going to bed.

~~~
So, speaking of Jack Bauer, I have only one hour left of 24 to watch. *makes pouty face* I am sad. But, that means I can now start in on another show. This is what I have to choose from: Miracles, The Dresden Files, The Tudors, Hustle, Torchwood, Veronica Mars, and technically Heroes, but only half a season.
mmmm, choices. :D
I not so orbitraily pick Miracles. And then Dresden Files. Although, I'm a try and finish Heroes, somehow.
This is not including my Star Trek viewing, which continues apace.
~~~

So, speaking of Star Trek -- Charlie X is a creeeeepy episode. And also, orange spandex exercise tights do not look good on anyone. Especially men with skinny legs and pantylines. I'm just saying.

Balance of Terror continues to be excellent.

~~~
So, we're status quo in the Dad department. He had a phone consultation with a second doctor yesterday, who's going to put him on some sort of diet. On the sister front, well, it continues to be a mess of gargantuan proportions. That's all I can say.
~~~

So, I broke a hundred pages (manuscript format) on my thesis. Which is of the yay. The not so of the yay was that a) the story isn't even half way done, and b) I *had* a hundred pages before, but had to cut about half out, so, really, I haven't gotten anywhere. *big eyes*

~~~
So, I've had this annoying lingering (what I thought was a) cold, but turns out was some sort of bacterial thingie that just wouldn't go away. *koff koff koff*. But, finally I went to the doctors. I'm on the PPO plan but it's easier if I go through our HMO office, and we have a good network there. So, I go, and I get this new Russian Dr. Lady who wore very high heels and a busty lace top, very buxom, with a regular white coat. I was somewhat amused and also just cringing cause she's on her feet all day! She put me antibiotics and a nasal spray. I'm sure you all really wanted to know that, but hey, I hardly ever get sick, so this is big news for me! I was all like, woah, I stick this in my nose?? heh.
I blame the thesis. I think it's trying to kill me.
-- I asked to go home early today from work. I woke up with a sore throat and it hasn't really gotten any better, and I was just wasting time at work anyway. I have two claim referrals to do, but erg. brain ded.
-- I found my iPod! It was in my trunk. o.0 Must have fallen out of my computer case sometime, I guess. And this after I settled on buying myself a new iShuffle. Darn! lol. (but they're soooo cuuuute)
-- Dad's doing well. Although, today he goes in for a shot of something, so we'll see how he feels after that.
-- I love Kirk in The Enemy Within, especially the Eyeliner Of Evil he wears as his primal, evil self. Also, Harry Mudd? GAY.
-- I have The Man Trap and The Naked Time waiting for me. Seriously, who named these episodes? They're like discount, bargain basement chicklit titles. Or pulp fiction titles.
"To capture the wandering eye of the Captain, he had to resort to extreme measures... the chase is on, in The Man Trap."[insert appropriate pic of Kirk in a cage, shirt ripped, and Spock standing off to the side, arms crossed, with a smirk]
-- I'm doing some research for work into the new HBO television show Flight of the Conchords. Okay, I think I love it. All the clips are worth watching, but I especially love She's So Hot, Boom and Inner City Pressure and Band Meeting with Murray. Okay, just watch them all.
-- Speaking of fun streaming videos, I've watched this 24 Jack Bauer vid like a gazillion times. *watches again*
-- And also speaking of cute boys, I did get to watch Ocean's 13 over the weekend with my friend's S and J, and adored it. I still think the first one's the best, but I don't really care. I adore them. :D In fact, I think when I'm done posting this I'm going to indulge myself and watch the first two films again. yayz.
Star Trek is good for the soul. Finished, finally, with Star Trek: Enterprise, I've moved on to the Original Series, which, I haven't rewatched in (counts fingers) almost seven years. *facepalm* wow.
Some time ago, when I decided to embark on this great Star Trek Watching Project, I wasn't prepared to watch ST:TOS again, but since then, for various reasons, largely my innate sense of chronology and completeness, I felt like it. Also, watching the *extremely amusing* Mirror Universe episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise, where Evil Archer and his Evil Crew manage to capture the Defiant (the same Defiant that disappeared in the epsiode The Tholian Web!!) was too much fun, and the design crew for that show did such an incredible job rebuilding the TOS set.
So, anyhoo, I'm netflixing the Original Series, and omg it is hysterical and awesome and I forgot how much I love James T. Kirk! ahahaha. I've only seen the first two eps - Where No Man Has Gone Before and The Corbomite Maneuver. In both these eps, Spock is still loudly announcing things all over the bridge, which is just the funniest thing ever. And then there's Kirk in sick bay having to do that weird upside down leg pumping thing. And then the Kirk Strut. *glee* I am filled with love. In WNMHGB, I even got some patented William Shatner/Kirk interpretive dance moves. :D :D YAY.
