We take a break from our continuing coverage of the strange 70s rainbow colored crack that is Life On Mars to bounce and clap our hand with glee over the adorableness of Murray Hewitt, the world's worst (best!) band manager. Aka Rhys Darby impersonating a robot.

How does your stand-up act differ from your TV persona?

It's quite different. I do lots of voices and characters. And I also do mime with sound effects, so it's a few miles away from the subtle humour of Murray.

Surely mime doesn't have sound effects?

This is my new mime I've brought out. When you look at mime, quite a lot of the population were missing out. The blind, for example, didn't know what was going on. But with my mime, they're getting in on the action as well.

Is that how you met Jemaine and Brett from Flight Of The Conchords?

They were in Wellington and I was in Auckland, so it was a definite bus drive to get to each other. But we connected mostly when we arrived in Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival.

We were amongst the only two New Zealand acts on at the time and we helped each other out. I did their flyers, Brett did my lighting, and handed out biscuits at half time in my show.

My iPod loves me, by evidence of it randomly playing Flight of the Conchords songs for me during my (late) morning walk. Those boys! They make me smile. :D :D

The manager, Bevin, starts to abuse me. Hey man, I just want some Muesli.

~~~
In other news, the Olympics have started and I'm missing them entirely! I just... I'm no longer very good at sitting down to watch TV. I'm going to have to find some way to watch my events. I'm sure You Tube will be very helpful.
I'm interested in Gymnastics, Swimming & Diving, and the Equestrian events. woo.
~~~

Speaking of You Tube, Catherine Tate & Daniel Craig behind the cut. Two great things that taste great together! )

ETA: Valley Girl Catherine!

ETA2: Bernie Mac. :(

Thing #1: There's this guy at work with the last name Ramirez, which is a common enough last name of course, but me being a Highlander fan, I can't help but impersonate the Kurgan's gravely voice each time I have to say this guy's last name. "Rrrrammmmirezzzz." Although lately, it's sounding more like how the bunny says it. Bwah!

Thing #2: Sleeveface. Wacky! Some of these are really pretty cool. And I will never cease wondering at the human capacity for coming up with bizarre and cool ways of wasting time. *g* My one disapointment was that I didn't see anyone do a sleeveface for Hole's Live Through This album. Link courtesy of zefrank.com.

Thing #3: Flight of the Conchords! Flight of the Conchords! Flight of the Conchords! *ahem* Their new album is out -- songs mostly from their first season TV show. No live songs on this one, and some of the arrangements and lyrics are different. Well worth it, even if you bought the previous album (which has a few of the same songs on it, but still worth buying both since the first one is mostly live). New Zealand's 4th most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo aka Flight of the Conchords are currently in LA, actually, performing two shows at the end of the month, which I do not have tickets for, sadly, because I was slow to realize what was what with all the mayhem going on in my life, but I'm just happy knowing they're around and enjoying success. And, to make me *really* smile, here are scans of a recent photo spread where they dress up like other famous rock & roll duos. Captain and Tennille!! (Bret is Tennille. bwah!) Yoko Ono and John Lennon. hee. Wham! All of the shots are hysterical but my FAVORITE THING OF ALL THINGS EVER is this photo spread of Jemaine & Bret as David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Prancing in the Street. *dies* omg I love them so much. Quite possible, Jemaine pwns me. I'm just saying.

Sometimes you just need Bret and Jemaine to make it all better. *g*

Partially because of my search for the French song "La Petite Hirondelle" the other day (thank you [livejournal.com profile] taselby!) I was thinking of Flight of the Conchords in the shower this morning (as you do) and singing the Foux Da Fa Fa song and realized it has been a while since I posted about the GLEE that is FotC.

(I have approximately 20,000 words left to go on my thesis. hurrah?)

This is more for myself, than anyone else. I was updating my profile the other day, sort of trimming fandoms, moving them around and stuff, and just got to thinking about what I spend most of my (fannish) time thinking about, and watching.
Highlander: )

Doctor Who: )

Friday Night Lights: )

24: )

Jane Austen )

Star Trek )

Pirates of the Caribbean )

Harry Potter )

Flight of the Conchords: )

Deadwood: )

Ocean's 11: )

Phew! Man, I've gotten no work done today.... meep. But fun! Yay my shows. I loves them lots. I didn't include Torchwood because, I just don't know about that show. I am watching it every week, which is something I'm not doing for shows I really love (and blame DW, really. [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro, you're so right about TW being methadone!) but I rather hated this week's episode, and the previews for next week didn't leave me feeling in the least bit excited. Still? I love Ianto and Rhys and Martha as long as she's on it. This may just have to be a show I sorta kinda watch for the sake of the Whoverse.

I may get back into Lost at one point, but I haven't been watching since it started back up. I plan to watch. I mean, I gotta know what happens. But, not right now and I'm not really feeling the loss. And the same thing goes for BSG, and again, not really feeling the loss. Last season was brutal, man, and kind of killed the joy although doesn't mean I don't still love it, 'cause I do. I'm in it for Admiral Adama.

Aaaanyywayyys, that's me in a fannish, er, nutshell. :D Also, GIP. Look, I has a Connor! <3 <3

My Flight of the Conchords Season 1 DVD set* arrived yesterday. YAY.

I put the first disk in and then proceeded to dance around my kitchen while making tea because just the theme song fills me with GLEE.

*Ordered before all of this shenanigans. Not that anyone should feel like they shouldn't buy DVDs.

~~~
So, come next summer (or even earlier, depending), when OMG THE INSANITY* calms down or is over, I am taking up horseback riding again. LA has one of the best Equestrian centers in the US, and I don't care how much it costs, I've been wanting to do this for years and have let other matters take precedence. But once I'm finished with grad school and feel like I can allow myself other pursuits, I am going to start horseback riding again.
Anyway, I was checking out some you tube clips of Dressage. Check out this lovely horse (this was last year) *dancing*. His name is Blue Hors Matine! hee!!.
Also, Salinero and Anky Van Grunsven, from the same competition. Dude, ON THE BEAT. awesome.
I'm not sure I'll take up Dressage, but to dance like that, how amazing.
*This is more my life I'm referring to, not so much the strike, which is as well organized as a thing like this could be, considering most of it is last minute.
This is me, pimping!
These boys are my new happy place. The wiki page on them says they bill themselves as "Formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo". Bwah! They are like The Monkees, only a duo instead of a foursome, and without the wacky plots, and marginally (very marginally) less goofball. *hugs them close*
Flight of the Conchords is made up of Bret McKenzie (the scruffy elfin* one) and Jemaine Clement (the hornrimmed glasses wearing one), two New Zealand musicians who are trying to make a go of it in NY. The show depicts their goofy, hapless life in NY, their misadventures with girls, their interactions with their band manager, Murray. It has me regularly howling with laughter.
This week I've been distracting myself (read: procrastinating) with You Tube clips from their HBO show, mostly their "videos" but scenes as well. I have collected them for greater enjoyment.
First, the main HBO Flight of the Conchords website has some clips and interviews and stuff.
You're so Hot, BOOM -- The background dancers crack me up EVERY TIME.
Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros -- They call me the Hiphopopotamus, Flows that glow like phosphorous, Poppin' off the top of this esophagus, Rockin' this metropolis, I’m not a large water-dwelling mammal, Where did you get that preposterous hypothesis?, Did Steve tell you that, perchance?, Steve.
If You're Into It - Jemaine cracks me up in this. Also, the girl's face with it's subtle panic as the song goes on. heh.
Foux Da Fa Fa - The best use of High School French ever. I love the costumes in this. Ou est le piscine? Splish splash. Bonjour mon petit bureau de change.
Bret, You've Got It Going On -- Jemaine tries to cheer Bret up. Why can't a heterosexual guy, Tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly.
Frodo, Don't Wear The Ring - Um, LOTR spoof. A longer, even funnier version is in the link for Part 9, below. I nearly peed my pants, people.
Angry Dance -- This isn't a song, but a dance sequence spoof on Flashdance. Bret! Dancing! Really really well. OMG, look at him... They say he used to be a choreographer. bwah. *hugs him*.
Threesome clip -- I could go on linking to songs, but this is a clip of the actual show and a hilarious interaction between the guys and their dates.
And finally, thousands of monkeys on the internet have compiled all the songs into music collections. Fabulous! Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, [Part 9 has the HYSTERICAL spoof of Lord of the Rings. These guys are from New Zealand...] Part 10. Phew.
*Bret had a small role as an Elf in The Fellowship of the Ring, and fans of the Conchords recognized... Um. Crazy weird fans stalked him ... some sensible person/people named him Figwit, the Elf, which stands for "Frodo is Great, Who is that??" And you all will be unsurprised to realize he has a slash following. There's a Figwit lives! website. Personally, I think Bret is almost disturbingly pretty without the scruff. I prefer the beard.
ETA: Apparently, and according to the Figwit FAQ, Figwit's popularity stems almost entirely from Figwit's good looks, and not due to Bret's work as part of the Conchords, like I first assumed. Also Peter Jackson got wind of Figwit and asked Bret back for Return of the King. Apparently he mentions it in the commentary. HILARIOUS.
-- I asked to go home early today from work. I woke up with a sore throat and it hasn't really gotten any better, and I was just wasting time at work anyway. I have two claim referrals to do, but erg. brain ded.
-- I found my iPod! It was in my trunk. o.0 Must have fallen out of my computer case sometime, I guess. And this after I settled on buying myself a new iShuffle. Darn! lol. (but they're soooo cuuuute)
-- Dad's doing well. Although, today he goes in for a shot of something, so we'll see how he feels after that.
-- I love Kirk in The Enemy Within, especially the Eyeliner Of Evil he wears as his primal, evil self. Also, Harry Mudd? GAY.
-- I have The Man Trap and The Naked Time waiting for me. Seriously, who named these episodes? They're like discount, bargain basement chicklit titles. Or pulp fiction titles.
"To capture the wandering eye of the Captain, he had to resort to extreme measures... the chase is on, in The Man Trap."[insert appropriate pic of Kirk in a cage, shirt ripped, and Spock standing off to the side, arms crossed, with a smirk]
-- I'm doing some research for work into the new HBO television show Flight of the Conchords. Okay, I think I love it. All the clips are worth watching, but I especially love She's So Hot, Boom and Inner City Pressure and Band Meeting with Murray. Okay, just watch them all.
-- Speaking of fun streaming videos, I've watched this 24 Jack Bauer vid like a gazillion times. *watches again*
-- And also speaking of cute boys, I did get to watch Ocean's 13 over the weekend with my friend's S and J, and adored it. I still think the first one's the best, but I don't really care. I adore them. :D In fact, I think when I'm done posting this I'm going to indulge myself and watch the first two films again. yayz.
