Ahoy!

A funny quirk of the Czech language is that the world "Ahoy!" is their familiar way of saying "Hi!" - sometimes spelled "Ajoy!"

Our Czech instructor didn't know if the nautical term "Ahoy" has its origins in the Czech language, or if it's all just a crazy coincidence that the land-locked Bohemia and English speaking sailors started saying "Ahoy" to mean hi. They're almost certainly from the same beginning. Very strange! And the Online Etymology website is no help. First time it's failed me!

And this is all to just to burble with happiness, incoherently -- > omiGodPirates!EEEEE!POTC2!!!!CaptainJack!Ahahhaha.

eta: So, wait, Capt. Jack wasn't gay before. Holy Christ! Even dudes at pride week would have told Depp to butch it up a little. If that was the straight version, the ambiguous one should be awesome, with snakeskin boots, a tiara and a little dog. And instead of going into battle with a Braveheart type "they can never take our freedom" speech, he can take off his long Joan Crawford gloves and say "get 'em girls!"

eta2: 4AM this morning. Better than 3AM!

I nearly burst into tears when I realized I would be sleeping in my very own bed tonight. :) 12 hours later, and I'm safely back in lovely Los Angeles. And, it's past 4 am in the morning for me, so I'm going to go collapse. *hugsfriendslist*

I haven't checked my LJ in weeks (it feels like months! there is some kind of time warp here.) and I can't tell you how wonderful it is to read my friends list and see how life moves along just like it always does even if I'm not paying any attention to it.

I've had bouts of homesickeness here and there since coming to Europe. I miss my bed and my things. I miss my car. Prague is beautiful, though, and Europe is always so interesting and there's always so many things to marvel at.

The world cup is here, and that's really a lot of fun. I'm a very passive observer of sports. I like to be among sports fans and watch the game and catch the highs and lows, rooting for this time or that team or whatever team strikes my fancy. People take soccer very seriously here! We watched the USA team get creamed by the Czech team in the middle of Old Town Square in the heart of Prague. It was awesome.

And! I went to the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert (and bought a T-shirt, 'cause that's what you do) and that was amazing. So wonderful to see them! their beautiful faces and all those songs that speak of my wonderful wacky home. I think that's when I really started to feel homesick, because I know those guys. I mean, I don't really, not in a day to day basis, but they are the definitive California/Los Angeles rock group. I grew up with them singing to me. It was like having a little bit of home with me for a night.

Also, I've lost some of my friends here. The class I'm taking could be either 4 weeks or 2, and most of the people here who were my closest friends left, and so it's a bit shiftless here now, although I still have one girlfriend here who's nice and sweet, but I miss my friends. The dynamics of the group got a little (a lot) weird when we lost half our people -- I could go on and on about the little dramas that are enfolding, but I just can't write about it now. Nothing serious, but just so silly and... sort of ridiculous. I'm still having a wonderful time, though, drama and all. I suppose where ever humans go (especially a bunch of writer/poets) drama follows. :)

I have less then two weeks here, which I think is good. This week I'm going by myself to Karlovy Vary, which is a spa resort town. It's going to be great!

I hope you all haven't forgotten me. I sent everyone that asked for one a postcard. I hope they all arrive safely!

love, h.

I have arrived in Prague! And have about 10 minutes to write a hasty post before meeting the rest of my motley group of classmates for dinner and some theatre or symphony or whatever it is that my teacher lined up for us tonight. I have had adventures already, of the harmless variety, which I hope I can eventually relate to you all. I had these vague plans of creating an LJ for that specific purpose, but I'm feeling a bit like it's redundent, since I'm posting here.... I don't know. I'm also keeping a hand written journal, which is easier to write in since I carry it with me, unlike the internet which sadly does not fit conveniently into my bag.

Maybe I'll write up a more detailed transcription of my journal into an LJ for everyone's benefit at a later date, and just inundate my obliging friend's list now with random, disjointed, and hyper messages until then! EEEE!

Ai. Must away. Now that I've finally found an internet cafe (been wandering much of the day looking for it... heh.) I will return to be a little more coherent.

love,
h.

(forgive the wacky punctuation, but these are weird keyboards!)

I have made it safely to my sisters house. :) The plane ride went as smoothly as could be expected. I flew Air France which has forever been given a warm place in my heart for not only having free wine, but ALSO showing an episode of MacGyver. What could be more auspicious! What other sign or portent do I need to let me know the Universe is on my side? Not only that, but they also showed Brokeback Mountain, which I watched till the kiss - THE kiss - before it got sad, and Roman Holiday, which Id never seen before.

Sis picked me up from the airport and the kids where wildly ecstatic, and it was all very cute.

And now, must eat. :)

Departure time is approaching. :) I will have internet access in Germany, so I'll likely be posting again once I cross a continent and an ocean. I have a frightfully long plane flight. When will they get around to inventing a transporter, I ask you.

Toodles!

All three of my favorite shows ended their seasons this week. Alias ended the entire series! How kind of them all to finish just before I leave, 'cause that would have sucked big time. heh. *g*

In exactly two weeks, I will be on my way to Europe. Ask me if I'm ready. Go ahead, ask me. Ask me what I've done to prepare. Go ahead, I dare you! *g*

Uh, yeah. Well, folks, I got a list of things to do. That's something, at least. Having a list is dandy, very useful. I look at it every day and see the things I need to get done, and then put it away again. Very useful. Good thing I made it up.

I have not been a complete airhead, though. I have managed to get myself a new roommate, which is good. My old roommate will be leaving me, deserting me, for Austin next month. I've made peace with this (and I'm happy for her, although *she's* freaking out, too. We're a couple of stess monkeys at the moment), but of course this means more things added to the list of things to get done before I leave because I have to replace lots of the stuff she's taking with her.

sigh.

Life! She is twisty turny.

I know it looks like I've dropped off the face of the internet, but I'm very much here, just with little enough to say.

I've been greatly distracted lately, but with no focus, so it's hard to say what's distracting me. I would like to say I've been busy planning my month abroad, but I've only just started thinking about that, aside from purchasing my plane tickets. I'm looking forward to the end of the semester, but the month of May is going to go by so fast, I'm a little worried. *g* So much needs to get done in May! eeee.

Aside from trip planning, I have to find a new roommate. After nearly a year of going back and forth, my roommate has finally decided, and this time I think for reals, to move to Austin, Texas to be closer to her boyfriend, so that's that. I'm trying really hard not to be pessimistic about this, since that's hardly fair to her, and also not sad that I'm losing her. She's one of my best friends, but we've been farther apart then this before and have always managed to stay close, so it will all be all right. 'Cept I still have to find a new roommate! Wah! I briefly thought about trying to live by myself, but the timing isn't right just yet, especially with the fact that the same month she's moving away is also the month I'm going to be in Prague!

If I wanted to live by myself, I would have to move, and I just don't have the time and extra money at the moment. Besides, I love my apartment.

I have been GREATLY enjoying 24, Lost, and Alias. Alias was so good! I was very very happy with it last night, and I can't wait to see how the rest of the end of the series plays out. These are really the only shows I'm watching, aside from the little bit of Highlander I manage to sneak in. I'm still quagmired in Jane Austen, which, well, I can't complain about since I'm still greatly enjoying myself. I plan on doing a list of story recommendations for Jane Austen stories, with almost all of them being Pride & Prejudice stories -- there's so few stories from the other novels.

Perhaps I can do that this weekend.

I just bought my tickets to Europe! EEEEEE! And also *ouch*, 'cause damn, expensive. But EEEEEEE! *bites fingers*. I'm first going to my sister's for a few days (and that's really what's making an already expensive trip more expensive, but whatchagonnado?) and then taking a train to Prague. Train tickets are yet to be purchased, but I got time for that. I like trains.

EEEEEE!

In other news, I finally got around to watching Apartment Zero last night. Read more... )
