If 500 stories in AO3 can be called a party. There are only 500 FNL stories on AO3, and for some reason the the second most popular pairing is Tim/Julie ??? Which I am reading and enjoying ?????? In a cute/bad/wrong/cute sort of way.

I have survived watching all of Friday Night Lights. I thought my heart was going to explode a few times there and I would just expire from too much love on my couch, but I made it through. Barely.

Clear eyes, Full Hearts )

In other news, yesterday I called in sick to work and had the ENTIRE day to myself. It was also the first day off where I didn't have to write or work or had obligations or plans or anything in about a year. I went to the movies and saw Logan, finally. And then I cleaned the apartment a little bit so I wasn't a complete sloth. There was a fair amount of TV watching too.

Quick thoughts about Logan: )
hafital: (Default)
So much to type about, so little brain.

This is what I've been doing:

1. I watched all of season 1 of Westworld and have decided not to continue with it. As a friend of mine said when i mentioned I just watched it and that I didn't think I would bother with season 2, it's too "rapey." That, and I pretty much actively hate every human and I'm not that fond of the robots either, so when I'm rooting for everyone to die I'm pretty sure that's time for me to bail.

2. In my infinite wisdom I decided to pick up Friday Night Lights again. I'd only seen season 1 back when it aired, and never continued. This was because of reasons, some to do with the show but mostly because life was very life at that time and I can pretty much pin point my break up with appointment television to that period. Anyway, a friend had just watched it all on Netflix, and I had always intended to watch it anyway, and I heard it was good, so I was like, okay, I think I'm ready. And I started watching it again and all through rewatching season 1 I was like, OMG this show is soooo goood why did I ever stop watching it whhhyyyy I love everyone on this show so much. And then I started watching season 2 and I was like.... OH RIGHT THIS IS WHY. Hah. No no, not because season 2 was uneven or anything but because I love these characters so much that watching them hurt even a little bit, emotionally or physically, makes me very anxious. Let's just say when I roll my eyes at the MCU fandom for losing their collective heads over Bucky Barnes, just say Tim Riggins to me and I'll shut up.

3. The kittens over at The Librarians are all very kittenish and that show is too darn adorable.

4. Life got out of hand this month so I haven't seen Logan yet. Nor Iron Fist, which I do plan on watching even though everyone and their grandmother says it's terrible.

5. Even though I saw the movie The Martian in theatres, and I had a copy for ages and watched it at least a few times since then, I suddenly had a desire to read fan fiction for it the other day. Specifically, I wanted Watney/Mitch Henderson (don't ask me why) but there's NOTHING in that pairing. I am so disappointed in fandom right now. BUT I did read a bunch of lovely fic in various pairings and threesomes, and some group Ares fic. I've bookmarked a handful that I liked, and I'm still poking my way through the stories on AO3 (surprise surprise there's not a lot) but I have a fic rec for anyone even remotely interested.

All This Could Be Yours, by mardia (Lewis/Watney) -- Both Commander Lewis and Mark Watney are stranded on Mars together.

It's not even remotely a popular pairing, but I adored this story. In such a small fandom, one starts to read everything, and I was not sorry to give this one a try. It's the first in a series, but the other 2 stories are more companion pieces. Not sure I've read another story, fanfic or professional, that truly delves into real intimacy between 2 people as well as this one, imo.

First, a Doctor Who fic rec:

Bed Bath and Beyond by [livejournal.com profile] cjk1701. Written for [livejournal.com profile] sizeofthatthing, although not listed in their master list for some reason.

I found this doing a random search on whofic yesterday when I was overcome with a need for Donna fic (omg Donna don't leave me. *sob*). It's lovely, with understated angst, and is surprisingly hot for being more DoctorDonnafriends than Doctor/Donna. And short, as most Donna fic seems to be at this moment. Set post Midnight, no spoilers for 4x11 or 12.

[livejournal.com profile] dsudis writes, So I was adding some new interests to my LJ profile (because I, uh... have some new interests. Yes.) and found myself feeling defensive every time I typed a female name, thinking, basically, FUCK YOU, SHE'S AWESOME, because I felt as if someone somewhere was going to be criticizing my love for them.

So, anyway, then I made a list of women who make me want to say FUCK YOU, SHE'S AWESOME. They are far from the only women who are awesome, or the only women people need to be told to step off of, but they are the top ten I feel that way about, right now, off the top of my head.

If you want to argue with me about the awesomeness of any of these women, I am afraid I will simply be referring you to the subject line. THAT IS ALL.

1. Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, Astrid Peth, Sarah Jane Smith (Doctor Who)

I would list all of the Doctor's female companions, just on principal, even those I have yet to meet.

2. Tyra Collette, Lyla Garrity, Julie Taylor (Friday Night Lights)

All of the women on FNL are awesome, but I love these three in particular.

3. Jane Bennet, Fanny Price, Emma Woodhouse (Jane Austen)

Jane is routinely slagged against for being so sweet and good, and so is Fanny for being weak or too pius or something. Whatever, I love them both. And I love Emma, period. *g*

4. Gwen Cooper, Toshiko Sato (Torchwood)

I have *huge* issues with TW the series, but I really like these two women, and it feels great to be able to say that.

5. Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan

I hope and pray that both these women rise above their circumstances.

6. Anne Lindsey, Tessa Noel, Amanda Darrieux

Say what you will about Duncan MacLeod but he has a string of awesome girlfriends. *g*

7. Elizbeth Swann Turner (Pirates of the Caribbean)

I love Elizabeth Swann more than I can say.

8. Captain Kathryn Janeway (Star Trek: Voyager)

I never could understand why people dislike Janeway. I certainly don't share the sentiment.

9. Lana Lang (Smallville)

I stopped watching Smallville ages ago, but I always loved Lana.

10. JK Rowling

I deeply respect JKR as a woman and a fellow writer and I always get a little twitchy when I see criticism against her (as apposed to crit against her writing).

ETA: and one more...

11. Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, Lavander Brown, Cho Chang, the Patel sisters, Luna Lovegood, Tonks

This is more for myself, than anyone else. I was updating my profile the other day, sort of trimming fandoms, moving them around and stuff, and just got to thinking about what I spend most of my (fannish) time thinking about, and watching.

Phew! Man, I've gotten no work done today.... meep. But fun! Yay my shows. I loves them lots. I didn't include Torchwood because, I just don't know about that show. I am watching it every week, which is something I'm not doing for shows I really love (and blame DW, really. [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro, you're so right about TW being methadone!) but I rather hated this week's episode, and the previews for next week didn't leave me feeling in the least bit excited. Still? I love Ianto and Rhys and Martha as long as she's on it. This may just have to be a show I sorta kinda watch for the sake of the Whoverse.

I may get back into Lost at one point, but I haven't been watching since it started back up. I plan to watch. I mean, I gotta know what happens. But, not right now and I'm not really feeling the loss. And the same thing goes for BSG, and again, not really feeling the loss. Last season was brutal, man, and kind of killed the joy although doesn't mean I don't still love it, 'cause I do. I'm in it for Admiral Adama.

Aaaanyywayyys, that's me in a fannish, er, nutshell. :D Also, GIP. Look, I has a Connor! <3 <3

I've been thinking. About a lot of things, so let's pick one, shall we? Strong female characters. Where are they and why aren't there more of them? What do I mean by "strong" anyway? I had more thinky thoughts about it, and then my work day got in the way. So annoying.

In my opinion, "strong" should encompass both "positive" and "negative" traits. I'm putting quotes around them, since I would rather not make a judgment on what any one person views as either positive or negative -- that's rather subjective. I love flawed characters, be they female or male, and think that sometimes a character's flaws are what makes that character strong. Currently, I've been focusing more and more on female characters, particularly with my original writing, and find that the more flawed they are, the more I love them. I find I want them to be spectacularly flawed.

Also, I feel the need to make a point, which is, I'm not interested in judging. That is, on judging a (female) character's actions as being right, or correct, or wrong, faulty, absurd, outrageous, exactly right, stupid, detrimental, hurting, or whatever. They could very well be those things, but I'm more interested in what those actions *say* about a character, rather than judging that character for being right or wrong. I'm trying to get at what defines a, in this case female, character as being that character, if that makes any sense.

(also, as an aside, neither am I interested in criticizing the writing behind these characters or the tv shows/movies/books. We can complain all day long about TPTB, or the writers of tv/movies/books, but, at the end of the day, we are not the one's driving the car, here, and what's on the screen or on the page is what we have to play with. Complaining about it, pointing it out, doesn't change it, imo.)

Anyway, I don't really have much of a point other than listing some female characters that I find fascinating, as much for their awesomeness as for their what might be viewed as their flaws.

I have not seen the season 2 premiere which is apparently available on the NBC website! I'm not sure I'm going to watch it before it airs... I haven't decided yet. But YAY. So happy it's coming back! FNL is the only one of my shows that's starting in the fall. *pets it, precioussss, yesssss*

Anyway, this post is to point FNL fans to [livejournal.com profile] winter_baby's excellent screen cap posts. SO PRETTY. This is 1x10, and at the bottom you will see links for the other episodes she's done. Please mind her request not to use these caps, she gives additional links to raw cap files.

She's got a great eye for some lovely stills and caps.

The meme from my last post interests me, and, as an exercise, I'm going to do it for a few more fandoms. just 'cause. Highlander, Lost, and Wiseguy are already covered.

The questions:

01. The first character I first fell in love with
02. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
03. The character everyone else loves that I don't
04. The character I love that everyone else hates
05. The character I used to love but don't any longer
06. The character I would shag anytime
07. The character I'd want to be like
08. The character I'd slap
09. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I despise

So, I haven't been commenting much on TV in the last few weeks (RL, school, too busy, laziness -- take your pick) -- but I have been watching all of my shows, although mostly not live because I haven't been home.

Anywhoo -- Friday Night Lights! I can't get over this show, omg. It makes me cry, laugh, sing, dance around, all in ONE EPISODE. Pretty much every week. And also sometimes within the same SCENE, fer crying out loud. I'm gonna try and put down some comments, but honestly, I'm just flailing over here, incoherently, unable to make pretty sentences.

eta: I just swung by TWOP, out of curiousity, and I had to quote from the FNL recaplet because it so perfectly expresses what I feel when I watch FNL:

So, like, I could write this recaplet IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE THIS EPISODE WAS SO GOOD. Or, I could use...a lot...of...ellipses...because...it...has...left me...speechless. Or I could describe my heart literally, physically thumping in my chest and how I leapt from the couch multiple times during the game. Or I might describe how pretty much for an hour I felt like I wanted to puke, my heart was so full. Is that enough for you Peter Berg? Jason Katims? Jeffrey Reiner? EVERYONE ELSE? The critic PUKING FOR JOY?

Exactly!

That is so Brokeback. )
