(I have approximately 20,000 words left to go on my thesis. hurrah?)
This is more for myself, than anyone else. I was updating my profile the other day, sort of trimming fandoms, moving them around and stuff, and just got to thinking about what I spend most of my (fannish) time thinking about, and watching.
Highlander: I'm still there. *g* And oddly (or not all that oddly) my current obsession with Doctor Who has me thinking of Highlander a lot more. Maybe I'm the only one that sees similarities between them, but it's the flawed hero thing, really. I keep finding interesting parallels. Anyway, I was thinking about HL just this morning, on how much I still need to go back to it almost daily, somewhere, in some capacity even if it's just a passing thought. While traveling in Scotland recently I was particularly back in the HL mindset. Not to mention having a BLAST writing for hlh_shortcuts over the holidays. I predict more stories as soon as I'm free of school.
Doctor Who: Yeah, so. Totally obsessed over here. Don't know if it will last, but I don't want it to end. hah. I'm sort of (internally) freaking about DW still being a live show. It's been a long time (not since X-Files, and that ended in tears. well, and I suppose 24, as well, which will also likely end in tears) since I've been this crazy about a show that's still currently airing. Normally, I don't do that, not like this anyway, as evidenced by my losing interest in Lost and BSG and many others. (and yes, I realize DW has been on forever -- it's not cancellation that I'm talking about, it's the *show*) This is different than say my love for FNL which is sort of perfect as is. DW is not perfect (hello, plot-hole city), but it's really giving me what I want right now: a wonderfully complex central character and gorgeous, amazing, very real, women. It's light on slash, but I find myself not missing that. And I am *over the moon* thrilled to find a show were I can really get into the het pairings. OMG YES. Right now, I have no desire to write, but who knows.
Friday Night Lights: I decided right at the start of the season to hold off on watching Season 2. It wasn't so much a conscious decision, but it sort of ended up being that as weeks went by and I just couldn't make the time to sit down and give it my full attention and I didn't want it be rushed about it. Appointment television just was not happening this year. Anyway, I have all of the episodes, taunting me. *g* I got a little spoiled for some things, but am mostly spoiled free. I hear the show is once again in danger of not being picked up, which is all kinds of sadness, although having distanced myself from it feels more just bittersweet. I lent my FNL season 1 dvds to a friend of mine and was like, "this is the best show in the history of all shows." and I mean it. Season 1 lives on as just damn near perfection, imo.
24: I don't know if it's a blessing (for me) or not that this season got lampooned. Honestly, 24 kicked my ass so hard last year I wasn't sure I was up for it again! Okay, that's not true. It's more that with everything else that's been going on in RL, and 24 being such an intense show, I think I actually would have had to wait on watching and... then I had no choice but to wait! And also the long wait has lessened some of the sheer panic I had over the fate of Jack Bauer. I think now I'm more in a place where I can handle anything this show wants to throw at me, which is saying a lot considering the show. heh. Oh a meta level, I'm still struggling over some of the political aspects of 24. If I hadn't been in a place where stopping might have caused permanent damage to my health, I would have stopped watching last season. As it is, I'm committed now, to the end, which I predict won't be more than one more season. Chalk it up to the magic of Keifer Sutherland.
Jane Austen: Participating in the online group read for Mansfield Park was just wonderful, and awakened my slumbering love for JA and I wanted to read them all again right away, but a) thesis and b) I wanted to savor the novels as part of the group read so I held off. The next group read is Emma!! I LOVE EMMA. Oh Mr. Knightley, my Mr. Knightley. Very excited. I can't wait till they get to Northanger Abbey, although at the rate these group reads go, that won't be till like the fall. woes. I'm going to be in South America when we start reading Emma, but I'll manage! I'm no longer avidly searching and reading P&P fan fic like I was a year ago, more that I don't have the time, but I still troll the groups and the online archives, keeping my eye on my favorite authors. And then there was visiting Bath, which was *beyond* wonderful. I have not seen the recent ITV movies, but I plan to just as soon as I can. I know there's been a bunch of mixed reviews, but, I'm fine with that. It's sort of interesting, since the books are the main canon. These adaptations are just wonderful little sort of treats. Well, except for the P&P2. All hail the power of Colin Firth.
Star Trek: :D :D God I love Star Trek. I'm never not watching it. Just assume I am. Things got bogged down because of the holidays and the traveling and the thesis and stuff, but, I'm still watching. Just watched the "Trouble with Tribbles" a week or so ago. I nearly wept with joy, people. I was like, OMG YOU GUYS and then there's Cyrano Jones, "Gentleman. If you'll pardon me, I have a ship to attend to. Au Revoir!" *little hand flair*. And then Kirk copying him. I... love him. *g* And still can't believe I wrote that pairing. BWAH. Anyway. Love Star Trek. My mom recently purchased all of the other series on DVD. I have them all! YES. When I'm done with TOS I'm going to start in on TNG. *burble* As soon as my finances recover I'm gonna buy TOS, too (love netflix, but i'm a poor netflix manager).
Pirates of the Caribbean: Aww, my one true and only Captain Jack. :D I haven't had the time to watch any of the films since the last one came out. While I rather loved the second and third films, no matter the critiques against them, it's really that first film that fed the Pirate Love and from which my fannish heart still circles around. And the fact that I love Elizabeth Swann Turner. A lot. And also, POTC is great, well for a number of reasons, but because it's that unique canon that lends itself to threesomes and foursomes very easily. The third film closed the door on that a bit (or a lot), and that's fine, the writers needed to do what they did and they told the story they wanted to, but I sometimes circle back to that first film and sort of want to cut it off right then, and live in AU Land.
Harry Potter: So, um, probably none of you know this because I don't think I ever posted about it, but there was about a four month period over the summer, starting from the release of Deathly Hallows where I was, I'm not kidding, KIDNAPPED, by Harry Potter. It was serious, yo. Like temporary insanity. I've never experienced something quite like this before, where every moment of the day I was reading fan fic, and it like took over my life, and I was waking up early to read, and reading at work (okay that's not unusual, but in this case it was *seriously* taking over) and like reading in between class breaks and sometimes even reading in my car (er, not while driving...). *facepalm*. I was still writing my thesis all this time mind you, but it took some discipline. And then? It just stopped. Like wammo. In september I stopped reading. They pulled the van over and let me out, a little disorientated, eyes glazed over. I can't explain it. And also? It wasn't like I was reading the popular pairings. Oh no. I had to go and get obsessed with Hermione/Snape, which maybe explains it actually because HG/SS is SERIOUSLY OUT OF CHARACTER, and the way the fandom writes it hits the exact same dynamic as Darcy/Elizabeth P&P fanfic but it isn't at all, imo, in keeping with the books, and some how the OOCness of it sort of solved whatever issues I had with the pairing, like thinly veiled romance porn, really. I read only one story that I thought was believably in character and keeping with the books and it was
yahtzee63's The Bloody Stare of Mars. (sorry no time to link. And, er, Yahtzee? Did I tell you that it's brilliant? Probably I didn't, but anyway, it's AWESOME. Thank you.). But, well, Hermione! Is my girl. So, I wasn't only reading Hermione/Snape, but Hermione/Anyone, just that the HG/SS stories were more easily available. (and reading a fair amount of Sirius/Remus and Remus/Anyone.) And also, the whole time I'm reading I'm having histrionics because holy magic juju beans people, but the romanticizing of Serverus Snape was just the most aggravating thing EVER. I mean, way to take a fabulously complex, richly drawn character and make him... meh. And yet, I kept reading and it started getting dangerous because then I was reading Snape/Anyone (except for Harry. I have issues.), and then... I stopped. Anyway, as is probably only natural in fandoms like HP, the end of the series closed off many doors for most people who were writing it, but for *me* the final book did the opposite and suddenly when before I couldn't read without recoiling violently, now I suddenly couldn't stop. Unfortunately, most of the fanfic comes from the time of the 4th and 5th books, and thus is wildly out of character, completely left field of canon, and often times unfinished. And I seem to have aversions to many of the more popular pairings. Good times. As I said, I've stopped now. Seriously, temporary insanity, which, who knows, might return when the next movie comes out. *big eyes* er, sorry for the incoherency. bwah.
Flight of the Conchords: Is made of AWESOME. There is nothing, NOTHING, that mars the glory of FotC the show, or Fotc the musical duo. It is my happy place. Where I go to when I need to laugh and smile and just glow with love and fun times. Total heterosexual life partner material. Extremely goofy. Also? Totally gorgeous. They sing, they dance, they play at robots. They call their manager Gingerballs. There's nothing bad here.
Deadwood: Wow. This show, right? I mean... *is speechless* I'm only at the start of season 2, and I'm sort of waiting now, till I finish the thesis, before continuing but I was watching as regularly as I could before the holidays and my UK trip in January. Right at the start I wasn't sure what to make of it, and then, in the fourth episode that thing happens and I was SAD, and I was even less sure what to make of it, but I rather adored Sol Starr right from the beginning, loved Seth with his seriously intense stare. It's such a... grimy show, in its characters, in its scenery and costumes, in its themes, but at the same time the grime is just a thin layer on top covering something that's pretty fucking beautiful. I dunno. Anyway, I started reading what little fic there was but stopped because I didn't want to get spoiled. Definitely a show to add to my yuletide list.
Ocean's 11: Nothing but love for these movies. I even love Ocean's 12. :D I have a thing for caper movies and tv shows. They're so clever! Each one has to have a fancy reveal, or three reveals as the case may be. It's almost it's fandom: Caperfic! Caper Fandom! Along with O11 there's Eyes and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Hustle (of which I've only seen the first episode. Mickey Bricks! Danny!) They should all crossover. :D :D (Ooooh, that's like my jack bauer/jack bristow/james bond/jason bourne cracktastic crossover of spydom! meeeee waaannnts) Anyway, O11 with Danny/Rusty in particular is like a constant warm glow, possibly caused by Ceasar's top shelf whiskey, and that satisfaction of a con well laid. *g*
Phew! Man, I've gotten no work done today.... meep. But fun! Yay my shows. I loves them lots. I didn't include Torchwood because, I just don't know about that show. I am watching it every week, which is something I'm not doing for shows I really love (and blame DW, really.
laurashapiro, you're so right about TW being methadone!) but I rather hated this week's episode, and the previews for next week didn't leave me feeling in the least bit excited. Still? I love Ianto and Rhys and Martha as long as she's on it. This may just have to be a show I sorta kinda watch for the sake of the Whoverse.
I may get back into Lost at one point, but I haven't been watching since it started back up. I plan to watch. I mean, I gotta know what happens. But, not right now and I'm not really feeling the loss. And the same thing goes for BSG, and again, not really feeling the loss. Last season was brutal, man, and kind of killed the joy although doesn't mean I don't still love it, 'cause I do. I'm in it for Admiral Adama.
Aaaanyywayyys, that's me in a fannish, er, nutshell. :D Also, GIP. Look, I has a Connor! <3 <3

Date: 2008-02-23 12:17 am (UTC)Wordy McWord. The fun thing about POTC fans is that so many of them are pleased as punch to enjoy both the 3-Movie Canon Compliant storylines and the end-at-COBP AU worlds as well. The sad thing about POTC fandom is that a few folks are lovin' on one perspective and hatin' on the other one, to the detriment of the community's peace and good will. Happily, most of that kerfufflage seems to have blown away like a summer squall.

Date: 2008-03-04 05:01 pm (UTC)If you want more perfection? You should watch The Wire. I'm just saying ;) I like the similarity in the show and FNL that both are set (and filmed) in a place that really defines the show showing both the bad and good.
I'm the same with HP. I usually read a lot right after a book comes out and then just stop. And Lost...well I had stopped and am now caught up and a part of me wishes I hadn't gotten caught up til it was all finished because the main thing that's keeping me is wanting to know what happens. I am hoping BSG will pick up my interest again this season.

Yup and Yup.
I help run a HP rec site, so if you ever want to give SS/HG or Snape Het or Snape Slash or any of the rest a try, go lookee.
http://mujaji.net/kia/
Since my friend Clare and I who started the group are SS/HG people, the site is very slanted toward SSHG since we choose our reccers. As for whether what we rec or all of SSHG is in character... Well, that would be a LONG discussion. The ship, even with my best defense of it, does have a "romance novel" problem--but I think the ship is richer than that--even if it means a little digging sometimes.
And OMG you're writing a novel.
And are in California...

found I couldn't resist commenting when I saw your comment on HP and Snape/Hermione. Cuz guess where fannishly speaking, I disappeared to?
hah! :D Thank you so much for the link -- I'll check it out. It's funny, after that totally crazy intense period over the summer, I haven't wanted to read HP fic again. It was so strange. I think I glutted myself so severely that a long absence is called for. It's like the time I ate so much yogurt I couldn't touch the stuff for a year. LOL. But I still love HP so so much, and the characters, and the world, the whole shebang, and I'm terribly fond of the movies, so probably when the next one comes out or when I cave and decide to reread the books, I'll start reading the fic again -- maybe at a more sedate pace this time. *g*
So glad you found me! I'm right here, hiding in plain sight, I suppose. *g*

It's a weird fandom to play in a lot of other ways too--wanky as hell, controlling, anal...
But often fun...
