Quick post to say that stories are being posted at [community profile] hlh_shortcuts! go check them out! So many good stories, with more being posted through the 31st, I think. Reveals go live on Jan 5. I bet everyone can guess which story I wrote haha.

This year, I got a very fun post-Bordeaux double-quickening story, with lots of pining and humor.

It is 28° this morning. It's supposed to get up to 47° and rain later. The forecast says the temperature will continue to rise overnight, then fall sharply tomorrow, and there is a red winter storm warning band on the long range forecast for the rest of the week. Oh, joy. Good thing I really don't have to go anywhere, excepting tomorrow, when I have a bunch of errands to run.

I ended up not going anywhere yesterday, either, not even to my recycling bin or my mailbox, because when I went outside to do the former, the pellety ice had solidified overnight and was just thick ice. I decided I didn't need to put those collapsed boxes into the recyling bin that badly, and I more or less forgot that I needed to go get the mail. It's fine. There's probably only some credit card advertisements and maybe a catalog in there, anyway. The check I have been expecting arrived the day before, so it's sitting on my desk now.

I started the Grand Work yesterday with the back room. I collapsed all the boxes that I had been saving, except for the one that actually fit the giant dog toy that I bought for MyNuncle (because it was a capybara (and, yes, there's a story behind that)). They made it as far as the breezeway (see above, re: ice). I put away, or at least moved, all of my Christmas gifts that had just been stacked on the table. I packed the capybara for shipping. I gathered up a bunch of stuff that I had ordered from Kohl's and been iffy about keeping (including a full-size wreath, and all the Halloween dishes I ordered) and got it ready to go back to the store (tomorrow), after the ice melts but before the next snowstorm starts.

I basically got the room down to its baseline level of clutter -- which means there's still cleaning to do out there, but there was progress.

A few things got ticked off my do-list for yesterday. While listening to Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, I drew the February pages in my desk calendar. I signed up for a budgeting workshop next month hosted by CSEA. I finally put together the vacuum I ordered on Black Friday and which has been sitting in the laundry room for a month. It was very simple, too -- all the pieces just clicked together, so I didn't even need any tools. I ran it in the kitchen; the beater bar seems to propel it on carpet, then that can be switched off for uncarpeted floors. It's heavier than the Hoover that it's replacing, though, and I'm not certain I like it. I don't think I want to try lugging it upstairs.

I wouldn't be replacing the Hoover at all if I could get the damn thing open so I could get at the filters to clean them. I didn't have this trouble with the last one. It simply requires more hand strength than I have.

There was no napping yesterday. I tried to call MyAuntie and Nuncle, but they were out, so I got my book and retired to the couch and read for the rest of the day. I finished Sorceress of Darshiva and have only Seeress of Kell (which I did not start last night) to go. I don't think I'll read The Rivan Codex, which is basically the story of how Polgara takes care of Garion's ancestors through the centuries (if I recall correctly, anyway; I have only read it once). After ten straight books of Eddings, it's time to move on to something else.

I went to bed around the normal time. I was able to reach Parker, so I kicked him out of the bedroom...and that was probably a mistake, because about an hour and a half later, he woke me up by scratching at the bedroom door to be let in. So I got up, used the bathroom, and went back to bed...and fifteen minutes later, he was scratching at the door again, so I got my little misting spray bottle from my craft room and spritzed him with it. He ran off, but fifteen minutes later he was back. So I spritzed him again. Again, he ran off and came back. After the third time, I was wide awake, so I ended up getting up and playing games on my computer until 1:00 a.m. And did Parker come to sit with me to get the attention he was apparently craving? No, he did not. He disappeared completely, the fuzzy little bastard. But at least when I finally went back to bed, he left me alone. Unsurprisingly, it was 7:00 a.m. when I finally woke up again -- two hours later than usual.

Today...I haven't quite decided what I'll tackle. I should probably just keep working in the back room until it is finished. I'll need to put yesterday's laundry away and maybe do another load -- I have accumulated enough rags now to do a rag load (which will include my sandals, because they were waiting for a load to go into). I need to sit down with my calendar and plot out do-lists for the rest of the week. Oh, I have to clean the kitty fountain today; it's Other Sunday. (It gets taken apart and scrubbed every other Sunday.)

The temperature is supposed to rise slowly today, by the looks of the hourly forecast, so it'll be a while before the ice starts melting, so I probably won't be going anywhere until this afternoon, if I go anywhere at all. Though I do need a couple of things from the grocery store. On the other hand, they could wait until I am running errands tomorrow....

According to their FB page, the new bookstore is going to start running three book clubs: a romance one (ugh), a general one (different topic every month), and a silent one. I may try the latter two. What I would really like is to have a language club where people could practice languages or even start learning new ones. I wonder if the library would be amenable to hosting something like that? I'm pretty sure there isn't already something like that and I'm not sure I'd want to have to organize it. I may check with them tomorrow, though.

I really don't want to spend my vacation cleaning. Have I mentioned that I really don't want to spend my vacation cleaning? But this is what happens when I don't spend my evenings and weekends cleaning....

While they're all hidden right now since the archive is still anonymous at the moment, the fics that I wrote for Yuletide this year have put me at 799 fanworks total on the AO3. And, me being me, I very much want to post #800 sometime before the end of the year.

I'm not sure if I can pull it off or not, but I'm really leaning towards trying to get it posted on Monday. The very first fic that I posted online went up on 12/29/2000, so it seems kinda fitting to post #800 exactly 25 years later.

We'll see if I can pull it off? I have enough WIPs that I should be able to finish something that isn't for an exchange that I can go ahead and post publicly that day. Theoretically, at least.

Now that the saddest Christmas I've ever had is over, here is a super lightweight post:

Got three TV shows from my mother. She says it's never been easier to score cheap DVDs, since everyone wants BluRay, so I now own...

All seven seasons of The Mentalist.

All six seasons of Lucifer.

All fifteen seasons of goddamn Criminal Minds.

The first two sound like guilty pleasures but that last one I have significant doubts about. But it was on network television, so I really hope the emphasis is on a quirky ensemble busting cases and not on graphic serial killer content.

The latest Forever Knight episode saw Nick team up with discount Patricia Arquette to take down actual David Hewlett for his tendency to commit really creepy murders with telephone cords. A couple baffling editing choices, and a surprising amount of torture aside, this was a fun episode but oh, it missed an opportunity with Nick's hilarious skill at hosting late night talk radio. Imagine if Janette called, just to make him squirm!

I love how Nick has gone from hating Schanke to being like this adorable little kid around him. I think Schanke is better for his quest to be human than Nick realizes, because he certainly seems most human around him. And Schanke keeps accidentally being right about stuff. Nick should just ask his partner (theoretically) how to cure (theoretical) vampirism. I bet the show would end right there.

but now that's how i'm getting paid

musesfool: gold star christmas ornament (follow that star)
[personal profile] musesfool
Christmas was lovely! On Christmas Eve, it was just me, my sister, and my brother-in-law, so we ordered in and watched a godawful Hallmark Christmas movie with Teri Hatcher in it. Then they went to bed and I did a Die Hard rewatch - I hadn't seen it in some number of years and for all its flaws, it is still a good time.

Christmas morning, my niece and her husband came over so Baby Miss L could unwrap the first set of presents - she still gets bored with it and wants to play with whatever she's opened instead of opening the next gift, so it's a process - and she LOVED the 30 second dance party button, as I knew she would. I am SO HAPPY I saw it somewhere (Wirecutter, maybe?) and ordered it, and that it arrived in time for me to see her play with it. (The adults got a kick out of it too, but it was hilarious watching her run up and press it each time it ended.) She liked the dinosaur cape and the books (especially "The Little Book of Cheese," which is in the same series as "The Little Book of Pasta," which I got for her last year and which she LOVES - apparently she will just bust out with "FARFALLE!" at any given moment), but did not care about the wings at all. Also when Alyssa told her I would be there, she said, "books!" so she knows I am the books and clothes aunt. *g*

The while elephant swap was pretty hilarious too, and my niece Nicki ended up with the cat-shaped measuring cups and spoons that were my contribution. I got a waterproof bluetooth speaker I'm going to have to set up in the bathroom to have tunes in the shower.

The funfetti cupcakes were a big hit. (I made sure to put cream cheese frosting on the ones for my sister; she tried one with the American buttercream and made the same face I made when I tasted it - it's disgustingly sweet.) There's picture of this year's selection here.

As for gifts, I received a handful of gift cards, a KRYPTO squishmallow from Baby Miss L, a pair of earrings made from chips of vintage pyrex, a stand mixer tree ornament, a copy of Dorrie's Anytime Cakes, some candles, and a pair of super warm and fuzzy grippy socks. I also bought myself a new winter coat, a new 9 x 13" pyrex baking dish, a new vibrator, some new bras, and a new pair of black ankle boots, so I'm doing all right in the gift department. *g*

Yesterday, I got home early and vegged out for most of the day. And then it snowed, just like they said it would!

Today, I made a new batch of dough and tomorrow I'll finish baking off the fig cookies for this year. I also want to try those orange cranberry rolls now that I have room in the fridge to let them rise overnight. I still have so many eggs left over, though, so I see at least one frittata in my future, plus at least one batch of Nadiya's egg wraps, which are delicious and I recommend them highly!

Now I should look into having dinner and maybe watching the Rangers game.

I've been meaning to post for about a month now and just keep not getting around to it. That initial impetus was getting some alarming news about an ex-coworker, about a year after the fact (I'd been told at the time I didn't want to know, and on the one hand that's true, but on the other hand, I probably said some charitable things about him that I wouldn't have if I'd been on the same page as everyone else). But it's not worth going over, so here we are.

I watched the new Knives Out movie, and I've seen a fair amount of good commentary on how the movie handles religion, but I haven't seen anybody talking about the obvious plothole of imagery-related spoilers )

I didn't come out of it wanting to read fic about it, either, which isn't too surprising, but what is surprising is that I came out of it wanting to reread the Donald Strachey mysteries, so that's what I've been rereading, alongside a bunch of old fic. There's still just no current fandoms that have got me wanting to write anything, so it's been Merlin, and Magnificent Seven and even Voyager and I've been desperate enough to drag out some old Torchwood wips -- one was about 95% complete, the other was barely-strung-together fragments that included Jack being stuck with an alien device that had him looking female without actually being a sex-swap fic. On top of it being a time travel fic. I have no idea if I had a reason for doing that, or where I was going with it. Unsurprising that that one never got finished, but the other one was so close to done, I don't know what it was missing that I didn't finish it off. Possibly just the fact that it was going to have to have a lackluster ending, being a fic centered on Tosh and Owen. They're legally obliged to not have a happy ending without a hell of a lot more work than 20k.

I probably won't have time to miss still not creating any fanworks, though. I'm heading up an exhibit the weaving guild is doing this summer, and work on that is going to ramp up in the next few months. I just got piece number one (point five, I have a backup-maybe-unfinished project I did last fall) on the loom right now, with a 70%-completed draft for a doubleweave scarf after that that's going to involve a heinous amount of pickup work, which is why it's piece number two. But if I do it right it'll be much prettier than plain old overshot, so. I expect that'll take up a lot of focus once March hits. Hopefully I'll post again before then.

Happy liminal spacemas, couches!

petra: Married vampires sitting next to each other, not touching (IWTV - Lesbian Bed Death)
[personal profile] petra
I am going through my traditional "How many fests and challenges can I imagine in a week?"

I don't think I'm doing Psychic Wolves this year.

On the other hand, Té suggested a fest of blorbos touching the Rockstar Lestat and now I want it.

[personal profile] hannah points out that, if we want to know what Tom Cruise's Rockstar Lestat would have looked like, we have but to consult this video of Cruise in a jukebox musical singing "Pour Some Sugar On Me."

...it's been a really long time since I was sexually attracted to Tom Cruise, but apparently [personal profile] hannah has the secret sauce.

Also, I now want vampires:

+ the New Burbage Festival (OMG DARREN NICHOLS) (Slings & Arrows)

+ on G-ERTI (they can only fly at night) (Cabin Pressure)

+ working for Oracle (Birds of Prey and a half)

+ visiting Chicago in the era of the Mountie (experimental hair for all who will) (due South)

+ what-ho'ing Bertram Wilberforce Wooster

+ in the world of the Five Gods (hello, is this The Bastard, I have your king shit devoté on hold) (Chalion)

+ dealing with the Light and the Dark, and falling somewhere between (Dark is Rising)

+ eating hockey players

+ being in the future and baffling Aral Vorkosigan with being a) not soldiers and b) hot AT THE SAME TIME (Vorkosigan Saga)

+ and Muppets (Lestat as lone "human"?)

+ in Narnia (Aslan would shit a lit. brick)

+ becoming Black Ribboners (time for a sing-song around the harmonium! NOT LIKE THAT, LESTAT) (Discworld)

+ in Night Vale (it's Tuesday)

+ mad, in a coma, AND back in time -- the Life on Mars trifecta -- let's see Lestat trying to eat Gene Hunt

+ calling Car Talk

+ hiring Neal Caffrey to do a spot of forgery (White Collar)

+ with war horses who correspond with Copenhagen and Marengo, gaily (Warhorses of Letters)

+ fit as a fiddle and ready for love (would they love or loathe Lockwood and Lamont?) (Singin' in the Rain)

+ come on Darth Vader gold glitter looks Great on you

+ choosing the lesser of two weevils (Aubreyad)

+ ...okay i just died a little over quentin coldwater fanboying the vampire lestat (The Magicians)

+ side-eyeing and being side-eyed by Magneto (X-Men)

+ and I had a good belly laugh at Lestat meeting Felix Harrowgate: battle of the asshole first-person narrators who think they are special

+ Zaphod! Beeblebrox! would so get it on with Lestat! (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

+ How do you reckon vampires get on with thalergy? Let's Find Out (The Locked Tomb)

+ How do you reckon vampires get on with constructs? Send Lestat to Preservation! (Murderbot)

+ okay hear me out Grantaire is weak for opinionated blonds but what if he met The Wrong One (Les Misérables)

+ it's already a doctor who episode innit but let's get some harkness up in this joint

+ Awful Sykes has a crush and so does Torquil (Archer's Goon)

+ RIVERS OF LONDON which body of water can we blame everyone on

+ Last Week Tonight: Our main story concerns The "Vampire" Lestat (of course John does quote fingers)

+ Jacky Faber met our hero at some point in her meanderings. I bet they shared a stage.

+ James Flint. BWAHAHAHA. WOULD HIT THAT. (Black Sails)

+ Falsettos: writes. itself. Louis IS the gay plague.

+ did you ever want to see Lestat fuck a muppet wearing leather? I DO I DO (Farscape)

+ truly Julian Bashir needs his not-boyfriend to run interference or he's gonna get eaten (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)

+ and then I hit Battlestar Galactica (reboot) which seems like a Terrible place to be a vampire but they'd have fun eating Gaius

+ Pern! is in the future! it can have Vampires if it wants 'em! Weirdest Harper Ever.

+ What happens with MCU? I couldn't begin to tell you. But there must be a clever answer.

+ Community: the study group goes to a concert and they all crush, each in their own way. Annie gets... scary.

+ I very much want Ray Person singing The Vampire Lestat across Iraq, but given the givens it makes me want to cry right now. (Generation: Kill, RIP James Ransone)

+ Scott & Bailey -- the teenage girls and Aunt Rachel bond over their crushes

+ Pamela Dean's Tam Lin has immortals. I want to see them emoting at Rice's.

+ And our wailing wonder, Lestat de Lioncourt. // Why, thank you, Sandi. (QI, the other guests are Phill Jupitus and Sue Perkins, because it's a Musical Episode)

+ ST: TOS -- Chekov and Sulu both have posters.

+ Does Venom want one? And how!

The reason I got a tumblr in 2013 was hockey RPF.

I have been watching my entire dashboard lose its collective mind over Heated Rivalry.

I tried to read this fic, which has in-universe fandom, one of my favorite tropes, and has a retrospective slant on what the development of hockey RPF in-universe would be like. Petra-nip.

I got as far as an in-universe primer for one of the characters, and was swamped with the combined nostalgia/trauma.

They're fictional! They can't possibly be sekrit racists or abetting rapists or not-so-sekritly shaking hands with Putin! They're not real!

And I can't do it.

I hope you are all having a wonderful time with your sinless imaginary hockey bros. I just keep thinking, "But if they were Real, they'd have Secrets that would make me Hate them."

I guess I will continue not engaging, because if I can't read an imaginary primer about an imaginary hockey player, I would be completely pants at watching the show. Primers are how I learned about real hockey players! It's a great starting place!

But not for me.
