Summary: "an AU where the enterprise is a VSA ship filled with vulcans"

Reccer's Notes: This short series (two stories, "logical" and "illogical") is one of my favorite pick-me-ups. Captain Skirk of the VSA's exasperation with his CMO's insistence that Spock is human slays me, as does said CMO's reaction to encountering his alternate-universe human self.

Fandom: Game Changers series
Characters/Pairings: Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov
Rating: Explicit
Length: 4639
Content Notes: Discussion of unplanned pregnancy and of abortion as a treatment option. Brief mention of a tapeworm analogy.
Creator Links: SirMxALotts on AO3
Themes: Crack treated seriously, AU, Canon LGBTQ+ characters, Mpreg, Established relationship

Summary: Most people in Shane’s position would call a doctor after two positive tests, but Shane isn't most people, so instead of doing that, he takes 17 tests over the course of two days.

Final result: 16 positive, one negative.

Reccer's Notes: A classic crack trope this time: Mpreg. The reason why a man could become pregnant in this AU isn't given, nor why Shane did nothing to prevent it (or didn't expect it), but it has happened so he faces a choice. This is where the "taken seriously" part comes in, as it's the same difficult choice any woman faces with an unplanned pregnancy. Rather than an unrealistic tropey outcome, Shane (after ignoring the whole problem for a while) finally talks to Ilya about it and makes his decision. I enjoyed the realism and the way Ilya was supportive without trying to persuade Shane one way or the other. We don't see the final outcome, but the story covers enough so that we know Shane's decision.

MSN report here, from last year. I just learned this today. If I can stop anyone else from being exposed, it's worth a reblog.

The dishes in question are basically ubiquitous in kitchens I have known and loved, so that's not great.

ETA:
Okay, now I'm just confused. The lead levels are both a) high and b) technically legal, and it may not be leaching in any case due to the processes used. I hate living in an era where I don't know which of the seven million articles titled essentially the same thing are bullshit, and which are trustworthy. I figured MSN might fact-check, but apparently Corelle has never issued a recall per se, just a "Okay, we guess you might as well buy new stuff, because it's true there's lead in the old stuff." This info from this article.

Critical Role

Back before the holidays, I didn't stay up to watch the very last episode of Critical Role for 2025. Despite knowing damn well how hard it is for me to catch up if I don't watch the episode as it airs, I figured that I was going to have almost a month until the next episode and would be off work for a decent chunk of that time. It would be fine. I'd definitely find the time to watch one single episode before the next one aired.

... yeah, that didn't happen. 🙃

The show picked back up last week, and I couldn't watch live because I still hadn't watched the previous episode. And then last night I couldn't watch because I was two episodes behind by that point. So I now have three episodes to watch, which is a whopping 10 hours and 17 minutes (plus an additional 30 minutes from the Cooldown for the two episodes that have one).

This happens every time. I don't know why I'm remotely surprised. There's a reason that I intentionally fuck up my sleep schedule every Thursday, because I know myself well enough to know there's not a chance in hell that I'll actually watch the episode before the next one airs if I don't force myself to stay up and watch it live. And then I end up 2, or 3, or 5, or 7 episodes behind and have to work my butt off to catch up.

On that note, I'm going to do my best to set aside some time this weekend to watch at least two of the three episodes that I'm behind on (and maybe even part of the third if I can manage it). I'm pretty sure that I won't be going into the office next week, so hopefully I'll be able to watch the third episode here and there between phone calls at work if I'm working remotely all week like I expect.

Over the past few days, I finally watched the most recent season of Only Murders in the Building and I enjoyed it tremendously. I feel like I laughed a lot more than I did last season. The thing that is so great about this show, other than all the other things that are great about it, is that the cast is so stacked that you can't play the "most famous guest star is the murderer" game. I mean, this season alone, we had spoilers )

In other news, we are - and possibly you are too - supposed to be getting a big winter storm this weekend so I'm thinking about baking plans. I will definitely post if I make something good. *g*

Snowflake Challenge #11

Challenge #11

In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your own post with the wishes you granted if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, this one worried me. I didn't feel comfortable linking my own wishlist to strangers, so nobody is gonna be able to use my post to help them complete the challenge (I didn't know it would have been helpful, my bad).

And lots of people, uncomfortable asking for things, only asked for rhetorical things nobody could give them. I think the challenge should have been titled "Fannish wishlist" if the point was to increase creative engagement in fandom.

The bigger problem for me is a total lack of shared fandoms with most people. I clicked on link after link, heart sinking further every time, because there's just no overlap. I really make a poor showing as a fan of anything, and when people do want recs in a shared fandom, my taste is too niche to satisfy the requests.

And I get the sad impression the Buffyverse is gradually losing its hold over people, because there was an amazing lack of the one big fandom I was sure I could find a request to fill. But at long last I did find a person who was writing in that fandom as recently as 2024, and who requested feedback, so I am now embarked on reading and commenting through their AO3 works, as applicable, fulfilling the challenge to my limited capacity.

Snowflake is good for getting me to post more. And I'm gonna try to carry that forward. But I guess it's in the name. We're all unique. And (probably just owing to my mood) that makes me feel insular and out of step.

---- ETA: Except where it comes to my little DW circle! I was referring to when I step into the wider arena that Snowflake represents! I have had wonderful conversations on all manner of different niche topics here, and know how lucky I am to have found this place and the people who make up my Reading List! Highlander, Jeremiah, Buffyverse meta, obscure music, obscure shows, awesome female characters and writing support have all made for wonderful conversations here, and I always appreciate them. ♥

This is why I usually spend so long in draft mode, to try and clarify before I faceplant. But part of this challenge is quick posting time, hence edits. :) ----- End of Edit

But I guess there's no helping it, and I will just have to be more effusive about what I do love.

For Sale: Nintendo Switch games

I've made this post a number of times without any luck, but I wanted to try again just in case I have better luck this time. Would anyone be interested in any of the following Nintendo Switch games?

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! (example on Amazon)
Spyro Reignited Trilogy (example on Amazon)
TemTem (example on Amazon)

If you're not interested but know someone who might be, please point them my way. I'm about $70 shy of being where I need to in order to cover bills after that vet trip yesterday, so it would help a lot if I could manage to sell any of these games.

For payment, I have CashApp ($Settiai), PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle (nancy.lynn.foster@gmail.com).

I did indeed get in bed by 9:30 last night and slept pretty hard. I probably could have slept even more, but 11 hours is a pretty good night!

For some reason, I woke up with Barely Breathing by Duncan Sheik in my head, and when I wondered to [tumblr.com profile] angelgazing whatever happened to him, she said he co-wrote Spring Awakening, which I did not know, so good for him! From one-hit wonder to Tony winner!

On the Mets front, they finally got a centerfielder in Luis Robert Jr. I guess if he can stay healthy, he'll be an upgrade over last year, offensively at least, though I am still a Tyrone Taylor fan for his A+ defense. #better call tyrone

In other sports news, my attempt to get interested in basketball seems to have done serious damage to the Knicks. They have been losing a lot lately. Plus, everyone I mentioned it to was like, don't do that. I didn't realize people in my wider circle felt that way about basketball. I guess there's always the Liberty! I should figure out when that season starts. Or the Sirens for hockey, but I don't think they've been very good either. Just a bad time all round for NY sports, I guess. And it's not like I'm a fair weather fan, though this certainly sounds like it - it's just I'd like to root for a team that isn't completely terrible, you know? As a treat!

On the books front, there is finally cover art and a real blurb for Dungeon Crawler Carl 8: Parade of Horribles, but still no Kindle* or e-book edition, so I broke down and pre-ordered the hardcover. (I can't do audiobooks. I've tried.) I also decided to do a reread of the series, because I've been trying to map out all the various stuff that needs resolving - and it is A LOT - so I wanted it to be fresh in my mind. So at some point there will be a post that is basically me as that Charlie Day-at-the-murder-board meme trying to figure it all out. *hands*

*I realize that I probably need to do a "free trial" of Kindle Unlimited to get the Kindle edition but I do not want to do that at this time. As the release date gets closer, we'll see if a Kindle edition shows up and I end up cancelling the hardcover, as I would prefer not to buy a hardcover tbh. I have all the rest on kindle, which is where I do 99.5% of my book-reading these days.

So anyway, I guess for the Wednesday reading meme, I just finished a reread of book 1 of Dungeon Crawler Carl and started rereading book 2: Carl's Doomsday Scenario. And I will probably read book 3: The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook after that and so on and so forth. *wry*

First of all, relax! I'm far from being picky, and I can pretty much guarantee that I'll love whatever you decide to create for me. These are nothing but guidelines, for you to take to heart or ignore to your heart's content. Also, hey! You're writing me fic or drawing me art! That's automatically a good reason for me to love you, no matter what. So, please, keep that in mind. Trust me, you can pretty much do no wrong. ♥

Wow, I only made one post last year? I'm here every day, reading, so I keep up with anyone still posting here.

I didn't put up the Yuletide polls this year. Just didn't have the oomph. It's been an oomph-sapping kind of year or so, hasn't it? (Fuck me -- just looked it up, and it's literally the one-year anniversary of that shitbag's inaguration.)

ANYWAY. Fun stuff. Things I have posted since...a while ago.

The conference was interesting, if maybe 1 panel too long (it ended at 4:55 pm, but the last panel was...not great, imo), though the lunch options were, to me, appalling. (Many people ate and enjoyed the sandwiches but there was not one that I would eat. I made do with salad, chips, and cookies.) My boss and I both felt validated by some things being mentioned that we already do and some that we are planning to do (if the new board chair approves), so that part was good too.

It was hard to get up (it was hard to sleep, knowing I had to get up 90 minutes earlier than usual), but I did it. I also saw two fun signs on the way: "Lube Entrance" and "You can ship anything." As [personal profile] devildoll said when I told her, I'll take AO3 tags for $200, Alex. *g*

Now I'm going to try to stay awake for another hour and then go to bed because I am le tired.

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT.

I wish I had more options to pick from here, with my massive song bank. Unfortunately, aside from a couple rare creepy ships there's no point subjecting anyone to a bunch of songs about, I rarely get obsessed enough to start attaching multiple songs to a specific canon. I can think of one song for Amanda, one song for Fred/Wesley ('Born to Die' -- I know! Shocking choice), and a couple for Cassie from 12 Monkeys, but nothing creating a proper trifecta except for thematic Jeremiah songs, and I already made a post compiling those years ago.

However, I just remembered the time I listened to Townes Van Zandt's album Flyin' Shoes and connected three songs to three of the tormented men of the Buffyverse. So that's what I'm going with, even though it's somewhat disparate.

Snake Song

This one is all about Spike, particularly his dangerous pre-soul era. In fact, it screams vampirism in general. "Ain't no mercy in my smiling/only fangs and sweet beguiling." But it also works for Spike's slippery ways, and tendency to cheat death ("skin I been through dies behind me") and his distinctive look ("shine like diamonds on a dark night"), before culminating with his whole season six interplay with Buffy: "You can slip and try to find me/hold your breath and flat deny me/it makes no difference to my thinking/I'll be here when you start sinking." Plus, it just SOUNDS badass.

Flyin' Shoes

This is probably the saddest song ever written to accompany a deceptively cheerful title, and I associate it with Angel. "Days full of rain, sky's coming down again/I get so tired of these same old blues." His depression, his multiple apocalypses, the rain in the alley... and the promise of the Shanshu Prophecy (his "flyin' shoes"). "Fall is a feeling that I just can't lose." It even mentions wanting to watch a winter day, which ties into 'Amends' and how he has to leave Buffy. There's enough to work in his love for his team, and how he finds connections despite himself, before it all circles back to the opening verse.

Dollar Bill Blues

Dark Wesley, angry, rejected, throat slit, on his self-destructive mission in life, including his significant abuse of alcohol. "Cast myself into a whirl, before a bunch of swine." The dollar bill is the symbol of his relationship with Lilah (which was depicted twice on the show, as it is mentioned twice here). The girl he wants to buy a diamond ring for is Fred (although the red hair would fit Virginia better), and the whole song reeks of desperation and damnation. "Long way down the Harlan Road/busted back and a heavy load/won't get through to save my soul." Oh, and "Always been a gambling man," says the man who was willing to summon Angelus and spring Faith out of prison. I'd say it fits Wesley pretty well, and it being fast-paced lets me picture all his action scenes between the verses.

And there you are!

I always hoped if I listened to enough Van Zandt, I would eventually find songs for all the other key players in these shows, to complete the picture, but it hasn't happened yet. His songs are magnificent, but often very specific narratives rather than character studies. Still, maybe there are a few more waiting to be discovered. His catalogue is very large.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge: Wishlist: "Create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts."

Years ago, I mentioned that I would love to read a thoughtful Rurouni Kenshin/Highlander crossover, and [personal profile] skieswideopen recommended one from FFnet -- indeed, a substantial one with a substantial sequel. That happy memory, plus several folks setting good examples, reminded me that the comfortable thing for me to do with this prompt is to ask to receive recommendations, if you happen to have some. Here are a few:

I'd enjoy some recommendations of really well-written and thoughtful gen The Legend of Zelda stories, any game. More specifically, stories that dig into some aspect of the lore/worldbuilding/themes of their game society, along with strong characterizations -- probably, but certainly not necessarily, starring NPCs. (Favorite approaches to Link can differ so. Some are brilliant; some are not.) No villain stories, of course, including Tingle, please: good guys and ordinary folks and tragic failures preferred. (And possibly redeemed monsters, where relevant. What does it mean in Twilight Princess that the King Bulblin chooses Link over Ganondorf at the last and appears in the end credits?)

I'd enjoy recommendations of well-written Dungeons & Dragons (cartoon, 1983) stories that I have not already read, or perhaps have not read for a long time. There are not that many on the AO3. While I'd prefer gen or canon ships, I'll happily read well-written romance, including non-canon ships, as long as they do not pair any of our heroes with villains, and as long as they are age-appropriate and era-aware (our gang are adolescents or teenagers in the '80s and in their 50s today). I think I'd particularly enjoy "returned from the Realm" or "grew up in the Realm," but canon-like adventures are always most welcome.

And while the Rurouni Kenshin/Highlander crossover that [personal profile] skieswideopen recommended years ago was very good, I still wish to read one focusing more on Kenshin's decision never to kill again, and how that moral direction intersects not only with HL's game's imperatives, but how it intersects with the moral imperatives of HL characters like Darius, Grace, the false Methos, Richie, and Duncan.

What recommendations might you like that I can supply?
