Every year I see a number of requests for casefic (and yuletide fics tagged with it) and I thought it would be nice to have a mini-challenge to make these easier to find. Thus, here is a post for those of us who love casefic, either on the giving or receiving end.

Note that while there are a number of mystery canons where casefic is an obvious fit, it can work for just about any fandom, so don't feel limited by genre!

Summary: Dapper Gentleman Gnome (Blue) has been mass-produced in a factory and expects to spend the rest of his days adorning a suburban lawn, until he sustains life-changing damage which ultimately plunges him into a possibly predestined friendship with a hand-crafted ornament made in the image of Sherlock Holmes.

Reccer's Notes: In this fic Watson and Holmes are garden gnomes, that meet at a garden centre, and develop a friendship. I know the premise sounds rather juvenile, but please trust me it is a lovely fic about unexpected change, and friendship, and choosing your own path. It's also very sweet, and you'll come to feel something for these little clay gentlemen.

Note: the fic is tagged with Sherlock Gnomes, but as far as I can tell it has nothing to do with that film, it just borrows the concept of Holmes being a garden gnome.

Tuesday is not normally a TV night in my home, but when Disney moved up the Visionquest premiere (and second episode; they're releasing two at a time), well... Given my Pacific time zone, I was able to watch both episodes that evening, and also one

ScreenCrush Easter-egg tally on top (and another the next day).

Non-spoiler reaction:
So far, so good, so seemingly worthy a successor to the two outstanding mini-series that preceded it (WandaVision and Agatha All Along). I'm looking forward to the next episode. Excellent visual design, super acting. They wove in adequate recap/catch-up for those who haven't looked at anything MCU since Endgame while simultaneously satisfying those of us who know the material like the proverbial backs of our hands. Mysteries and emotion abound. My few quibbles may well yet pan out as elements yet to be revealed. Here's hoping for all things good.

I would prefer a different night, though. Just me?

We can look into getting him a set of actual grooming tools, he needs to learn that the right tools for the right job are an important-”

“Yuna. Sweetheart.” David interrupts. “I did not buy our son a piece of dead animal as a souvenir from Russia.”

Ilya loses something important at the airport; years later, Shane gives it back to him.

Reccer's Notes: There's some angst in this story, especially in Ilya's childhood, and he loses his mother at age 12 but in a different and somewhat less tragic way. Ilya and Irina are the wolf version of selkies, but due to Andrei's childish malice Ilya's pelt accidentally ends up with four year old Shane, who is thereafter inseparable from it. The story touches on scenes across their relationship from their pre-rookie meeting until they're thoroughly in love (even if they haven't yet acknowledged it), weaving Ilya's lost pelt into their history. After the story's start there's not a lot of angst, and the ending is of course happy and literally fluffy! A fun read.

(Thanks to previous years' posters! It seems like this one bounces around in ownership, and I was excited for it this year, so I've gone ahead and posted it.)

Not every story is pleasant. Not every story has a happy ending, and not all happy endings come without a dark and painful journey. And sometimes, those are the kinds of stories that we really, really want to read.
If you're one of the many people interested in either writing or receiving darkfic or horror, then Crueltide is here ~~to devour your soul~~ for you!

Why Crueltide?

Because darkfic isn't to everyone's taste. By making it easier to identify darkfic prompts and people open to receiving darkfic in Yuletide, we can all indulge our preferences without placing undue pressure on our assigned writers or risking gifting unwelcome fics to our recipients. (And also: the name was the least cutesy of those being thrown around in 2014.)

What is darkfic?
Depends on your definition. But here's a (non-exhaustive) list of darker tropes to get you started:

Does a darkfic story have to have an unhappy ending/some other specific trope?
No! Not at all. Just because a story is packed with darkfic tropes doesn't mean there's no light at the end of the tunnel. Also, just because you like one trope, it doesn't mean you like all of them. Feel free to specify your do-not-wants alongside your wants.

Great, how does it work?
-- If you end up writing a darkfic story, just tag it with Crueltide when you upload it to the collection, and that'll help readers find more of what they like. It would also be good to tag any particular tropes you've used, to help readers find/avoid them. That's all you need to do! If your recip requested dark or horror fic but didn't comment on this post, you can still tag it with Crueltide if it fits the theme! The Crueltide tag helps all of us darkfic and horror readers find more things to read.

It is time once more for the Yuletide Madness Drabble Invitational!

Are you going through the tagset, thinking about your signup, and getting lured down plotbunny holes?

Well, if you are entranced by tiny canons, luscious fandom promos, or letters with prompts that you absolutely adore, and you've got to do something to appease the itty bitty plot bunnies that are nibbling at your ankles, the Yuletide Madness Drabble Invitational is back to meet all your "I don't have time or brain enough to do 1000 words, but that idea is still keen" needs.

How does it work?

Write drabbles or drabble series for Yuletide Madness. Proper ones, where the text of each drabble is exactly 100 words, please. Ficlets are fun, but not all ficlets are drabbles in just the same way as not all poems are sonnets. (You can, of course, post a 1000 word tale told in drabbles, where each chapter/bit is exactly 100 words to the main Yuletide collection, if you like. Just be sure that it is eligible to fulfill the main gift rules for that recipient.)

Give them to people.

"IMPORTANT NOTE: In Yuletide, poetry is opt-in - only people who asked for poetry (here or in their signup or letter) should receive it."

I know poetry is a sometimes food for a lot of people, but. But! There is nothing in the signup instructions to indicate that it's opt-in, so I think this post's assertion is flawed.

Also, with my normal response to people's Do Not Wants, it's been a while since I read something that made me want to write 1K of limericks for whomever I am assigned quite this badly. Since when is poetry an opt-in experience? I don't think everybody who signs up for Yuletide is aware of this; I sure as hell have not been.

selenak, with all due respect, I am not going to apologize for the Borgias sonnets, despite the fact that I doubt there was a "Please write me poetry!" in your signup that year.

Also, relatedly, I told someone who watched Slings & Arrows (Paul Gross sees a ghost, Shakespeare edition) and is watching due South (Paul Gross AND David Marciano see ghosts, Mountie edition) to watch Men with Brooms (Paul Gross sees a ghost, curling edition).

And now I am hoping that in Heated Rivalry, the ghost/flashback scenes, at least in fanfiction, involve Irina Rozanova haunting roman-à-clefified Gary Bettman.

(Have I watched it yet? Have I heck. I can't watch simulated intimacy without serious embarrassment squick. But I Tried.)
