This last year went by in a complete blur but then the last month or so slowed down to a very. slow. crawl. which was fine by me. I'm not actually in a rush to get to 2024 but it's here now! So, yay for New Year and hopefully we all survive it in tact and happy and healthy and the world stops being such a crazy shit show. That's my wish!
Later today, I'm going on a hike with friends up to the Griffith Observatory where there will be a beautiful (but probably hazy, knowing LA) view of Los Angeles. Huzzah!
That is very fitting for my own personal holiday theme I've got going on over here. Having lots of fond feeling for Los Angeles right now as my Yuletide gift got me to rewatch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood a few times this past week. It remains my favorite Tarantino movie, and possibly one of my favorite movies all together. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(eta: whoa, just had an earthquake. okay maybe that's too much of an LA experience for New Years, let's pull it back)
It's been a Brad Pitt Yuletide. It's also been a very crooks and thieves and heists kind of season.
On to Yuletide Reveals --
I wrote 2 stories for Yuletide this year, which is 2 more than I've written for Yuletide since 2010!

Summary:
I matched on Ocean's 11, which was very thrilling since I had been wanting to match for Ocean's 11 since I started doing Yuletide. And for a while there I offered it every time in the hope that I would be matched and I would get to write it (don't ask me why I didn't just write it outside of Yuletide) but it never happened until now! Finally!
But, of course, it has been over 20 years since the first film was released and also I had not done Yuletide in over 10 years! I got my assignment and I was like UH OH WHAT HAVE I DONE. hah.
Anyway, long story short, I needn't have worried. Though I waited way too long to start, had technical difficulties when my dvds proved to be old, and relied on the pressure cooker stress of having only 3 days to write it, I have once again fallen deeply in love with these films and these characters and now can't stop thinking about Danny and Rusty. Over 10K words in less than 3 days! Posted with only 2 hours and 40 minutes to spare before the deadline. Just like the good ol days. ha cha cha. Better since I could continue to fiddle with it for the next week.
When I tell you that I adore Danny and Rusty, and these films, it is not fully explaining to you how much I adore Danny and Rusty and these films. I love them.
and THEN...
After all that, on Christmas Eve, I decided I would write a treat and because the list of Yuletide participants is frightfully long. And because I wanted to give a treat for someone I knew and cared for, I wrote a short, moody, little Henry Gondorff/Johnny Hooker (The Sting) story for
dorinda, who is deserving of all the yuletide gifts and more.
What was interesting about all this (for me, at least) is writing for 2 different films/fandoms that are in the same genre and feeling out how they were the same and how they were different. Obviously Ocean's 11 is largely influenced by and takes inspiration from earlier films like The Sting, which is probably held up as the quintessential heist movie. Not to mention the original Ocean's 11 film. And there's a lot of crossover between them, but they are actually so very different in tone and the dynamic between the characters. Also, The Sting is a depression era story, and it's colored heavily by that, while everything in Ocean's 11, even the prison scenes, are written with a backdrop of privilege and wealth. Even if that wealth is largely stolen.
Anyway, I'm very proud of both stories, especially What Really Happened with Marco, which was a wild experience to write and also one of my favorite stories I've ever written, and, not to be too obnoxious, but everyone should read it lol, so go read it!
As for The Sting, well.... I'm not particularly capable of watching The Sting without believing that Henry and Johnny are then immediately married afterward. So, that's more or less where I was writing from. Also, poor Johnny, always getting hit in the head.
Timing and Lighting has the honor of being the shortest story I've written in over 10 years, maybe even like 20 years. :D I didn't know I could write a story less than 3k. Go read that one, too.
mwah. happy new year!

Date: 2024-01-01 08:25 pm (UTC)I adore "Timing and Lighting", from mood to characterization to resolution--and as I mentioned, that is a great title!

Date: 2024-01-01 11:36 pm (UTC)I am very pleased you liked it since I wrote it for you, but also I really just wanted an excuse to mentally swoon over Paul Newman and Robert Redford for a few hours. <3
(Sort of related, I learned while looking up some info on Steve McQueen after watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, that McQueen almost took the part of Sundance in Butch Cassady and the Sundance Kid opposite Paul Newman, but they couldn't agree on top billing so he stepped away. Blows my mind.)
