hafitalThat's what my mom called the new HP movie and it makes me laugh so that's what I'm calling it now haha.

Things I loved:
Which is mainly Dumbledore. DUMBLEDORE ILU <3 times infinity! Okay, I do have a minor problem with the fact that he looks so incredibly dapper, because technically all these wizards are not supposed to know how to dress like muggles, but whatever. Jude Law looks fantastic as Dumbledore and it just made me want to forget about the real story and just have a gazillion movies about Dumbledore teaching as a younger man, please and thank you. Honestly, I know they used Fantastic Beasts as the way into the Grindelwald story (and the magical creatures are cute and cool) so therefore the movies are from Newt's POV, but right now I would much much much rather we had the story of Grindelwald's rise to power and subsequent defeat from Dumbledore's POV. Oh well.
I know Dumbledore is a totally manipulative genius and a problematic character but I don't care I love him.

I also love the look of the movie and cool effects quite a bit! The wizarding world is just a lot of fun, even when the plot is wackadoo lol.
I loved Tina and Jacob, although I think Jacob was totally underused in this film. Like, why was he even there other than to be a place holder for all muggles? He didn't really do much for the plot. Presumably he will play a bigger role when Grindelwald really starts killing people? killing muggles specifically. but who knows.
I really loved Leta LeStrange. Again, I wanted her story more than the actual story of the movie, especially while she's at Hogwarts, and this odd friendship she has with Newt and why she ended up with Theseus instead, and why do the other girls hate her so much, and did she really kill her baby brother, and jeez what a creepy dad! Like seriously, that is one creepy dad! lol. Anyway, somehow the LeStrange family doesn't actually end here, so either she's not dead, or Credence really is a LeStrange and has babies, or Rabastan and Rodolphus LeStrange stole their last name. There was supposed to be a LeStrange in school with Tom Riddle so. You know. Who knows!
Things I did not like:
I wish I Iiked Redmayne's performance as Newt more. I mean, I like Newt just fine, I just find his acting tedious.
I did not like the blood bond pact thing between Dumbledore and Grindelwald (honestly, typing those two names is a chore lol). One of the things I love about Dumbledore is that he IS problematic, and has huge flaws, and one of those is that he chose not to fight Grindelwald for so long because he didn't want to be reminded of their time together and the fact that when they last fought they accidentally killed his kid sister. So he delayed fighting him until the death count got too high. Saying that he actually delayed fighting his boyfriend because of the magic blood pact weakens the character and takes some of his color away, which imo is too bad. But, you know, whatever.
I'm not sure what the purpose of having Nicholas Flamel there was.
I do think they miscast Grindelwald and the direction they went with him is eh.... wayyyyy too obvious. They went with menacing and creepy instead of charming and deadly. It really is hard to understand how anyone could have seen Colin Farrell's performance as Graves and then chose to go with Depp, but whatever. I would have liked to have seen someone who physically looked more the part, too. Also, there's a lot of wind up with Grindelwald and not much delivery, although maybe that's because they're stretching this out for so many movies. I like his entourage of creepy French ladies, though. And I did like Depp's delivery on his line, "I hate Paris." haha.
I never once believed Grindelwald was telling the truth at the end. I mean, I automatically assumed he was lying to Credence about him being a long lost Dumbledore, so I'm really surprised that most people believed it. Am I supposed to believe it? I thought it was obvious he was lying! He needs Credence to kill Dumbledore so he manipulates him to direct his anger and hate toward Dumbledore, exploiting Credence's confusion and abandonment issues. But now I'm confused lol. I guess he could be? but how??? since the timing doesn't work out. He would have to be a child of either Albus or Aberforth, since Credence as born after all the other Dumbledores are dead. And if so, they had a baby when they were like 20 or 18, respectively. Who knows! Aberforth is getting it on with some unknown lady friend and doesn't know he knocked her up haha. Albus is supposed to be celibate, I thought. :/
So, I love all the magical creatures, but now they just look like they're being stuffed in and around other plot, and not really having a reason to be in there. Except for the nifflers! and the little tree stick guy. They each had one important job to do, and they did it well. lol.
I really kind of enjoy Ezra Miller quite a bit, so I hope in future HP/FB movies he gets to do something more than lurk in corners and look sad.
I'm assuming that the McGonagall in the movie is a different McGonagall because our Professor McGonagall wasn't born until 1936 or something. If not, than this is very sloppy writing for the sake of being cute, and I do not like it.
I have more thoughts but it's late now and I gotta go to bed.

Also, I am writing (and hopefully finishing sooner rather than later) a Tony Stark-centric post Infinity War gen story that no one is going to like but me lol. It has all the sad in it too. This is the sad Tony & Peter story I mentioned before, I finally pummeled myself together enough to figure out how to write it. Oy, why do I do this to myself. I don't know.
