Plus no spectre of J-class frighters looming over his future. it's so hard in "The Cage" because you get such a narrow view of him when he's burnt out and then in crisis. Trying to sort out what kind of man he is when he hasn't just lost men under his command is tough. But I love how you were able to give him one last fling before the end. Particularly the way he and Chekov resisted, before giving in, and surprisingly!sexy Chekov for the win! And also, VODKA. ZOMG.
