Okay, in order to prevent myself from responding to the crazy lady who's currently haunting the HL lists, I'm going to blather here. And? This has the added benefit of allowing me to procrastinate. la la la.

Ta da! *does curtsy*
I can understand saying that the D/M relationship on screen is pretty tension filled, and that, in order to get them into a romantic relationship one must do more work than merely placing them together in a room. Sure. And I can understand being somewhat annoyed by the lack of such reflected in fic, sure, whatever (although, come *on*. There's incredible fiction and there's not so incredible fiction. Like the saying goes, let your fingers do the walking, already) But, saying that this tension comes from Methos being male and from Duncan's uneasyness with men in general is just ridiculous. Not only because it's ridiculous, but because then your reducing *both* Duncan and Methos (and the acting behind each) to nothing more than a reaction to gender, and dismissing all of the choices, both in canon and behind the camera, that went in to making these episodes so damn good.
Also, I always find I need to make Duncan more the instigator in starting a relationship precisely because he is the one less likely to have had previous relationships with men. Not that Methos wouldn't want to start some hot monkey love with Duncan, he's clearly smitten, but I feel he'd be much more hesitant starting something and changing what they have already. I'm not so sure he would need to have sex with Duncan (although *I* need him to have sex with Duncan *g*). While Duncan would have less reservations about that sort of thing.
I don't always write from this perspective, but it's generally how I see things. If you see them as best friends and as being important to each other, then they're really already there, and sex is just one more step over the line.
And damn, it's late and I'm supposed to be home already! oops.
eta to fix some of my atrocious grammar.

And I didn't manage to stay out of the discussion. My fingers still itch to send something nasty her way.

ahahahaa. *g* I know HL has a tough reputation, but hardly any newbies get killed, honest. Okay, well maybe a few do, but you won't!
Re: lists.
It's sort of haphazard, these days. And they can be deathly silent, and then suddenly explode with over 100 emails a day. It's weird like that. But the archives on all these lists are great. :) Like any fandom, they can be simultaneously aggravating and fun and sometimes going no mail is a good thing.
Um, to frazzled to properly link, but they are all on yahoogroups:
ROG-L
Duncan_Methos (used to be DuncanMethos, and the old archive for this still exists under that old name)
Duncanslash
CriticalEdge
OnlyDuncanMethos (people will warn you away from this list, just fyi. This is where the crazy lady is currently stirring up trouble.)
HLAllFic (fiction only)
HLGenFanfic
HighlanderSlash
and ConnorList, if you feel like talking about Connor. :)
There are probably others to which I don't belong. Join! It's great getting fresh new people who are sane! weee.

Date: 2003-12-08 03:21 am (UTC)If you want to watch the Admin play a truly masterful game of needle the troll, ODM's the place to be right now. On the ROG-L it's Chocolate Challenge time, and the troll has yet to realise she's on moderated status. Over on CritEdge the Admin just banned the troll, so it's business as usual there. Everything else is pretty quiet.

I think you know I pretty much agree, most of the time. I think a big factor for me is the idea that Methos would be willing to wait for the time to be right - that he would take the long view, and be patient enough to let things happen in their own time. By contrast, I think Duncan, once he's made up his mind, is more likely to take action, so all things being equal, I see him as the instigator - even if he is less likely to have had relationships with men, which I believe only every other day. *g*
OTOH, I'm more and more taken with the idea that Duncan and Methos slept together after the under-the-bridge scene in Methos so there you go.
Rambling ever onward...

I'm really with you on this. And yes, I should have clarified that my above rambling is rather more for post-Horseman hanky-pankyness. (not so good with the word making today...)

Date: 2003-12-09 05:40 am (UTC)I don't know, I think I can see Duncan really getting into delayed gratification... once he's on the path. *eg* It's the delayed decision-making I think he has a problem with. Man of Action!(tm)
Methos is just perverse, I agree. I know, you didn't say that, but really, you did.

Thank you :)
