I think it's time for some of that wonderful LJ Fandom Friend's list good thoughts mojo.
Friday afternoon I got a call from my Mom telling me my Dad was ordered by his doctor to go to the ER, right then, emergency emergency.
He hasn't been feeling well for a long time, dizzy, low energy, itching, frequent urination. Mom has been telling him to go to the doctors for months now. I've known something was wrong, too, and clearly from the symptoms he's been having, I was pretty sure it had something to do with his prostate, but good luck getting him to admit that, and, well, it's an awkward conversation to have with your father. And he's a stubborn man.
Finally, finally, he felt bad enough that he went to the doctor's on Wednesday, and Friday, when they got the lab results back, he was ordered to go to the ER that day, right now, go! The reason he hasn't been feeling well is because his kidney's are failing. Have been failing. Were about to fail. If he hadn't gone to the doctor's when he did, he'd have been dead in two weeks. And I was right, the kidney trouble is a result of pressure from the prostate. So, he's in the hospital right now, they got him on all kinds of high blood pressure stuff, 3 kinds of IVs, a catheter, blood transfusion. They have to treat the kidneys' before they can even contemplate figuring out what's going on with the prostate -- could be cancer, could just be enlarged, or an infection. It's possible they can reverse some of the damage to the kidneys, but it's also possible he'll need to go on dialysis for the rest of his life. To early to tell. Right now, they need to get him as back to normal as possible.
I'm fine. Mom's fine. Dad's as fine as one can be in this situation. We're all very even keeled people, over here, not really prone to histrionics, so none of us are in a panic or anything. And I'm thinking, he's going to be okay. One never knows, of course, but well, he's weak and tired but that's the toxins in his blood from not processing waste properly. If he has prostate cancer, well, that'll suck, yes, but we're pretty optimistic at the moment.
Criminy!

Date: 2007-05-27 06:26 am (UTC)You know that thing where they did a double-blind study, and proved that prayer doesn't help people get better when they have no idea they're being prayed for (or sent good thoughts, or whatever you like)?
Tell your Dad (and your mom) that all your friends are sending these good wishes. Because it turns out when an ill person knows that people give a shit if they get better, it MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE. :-)
You and your family will absolutely be in my thoughts.

Date: 2007-05-27 10:18 am (UTC)Also, a story that might help: several years ago, my mother was diagnosed with a very rare kidney problem (her kidneys are literally calcifying). The only treatments are a change in diet (no calcium) and a potassium suppliment (so no potassium in her diet either). Her doctor didn't expect her to last the year.
Well, she's not only still here, her kidneys are improving. The doctors didn't even think that was possible.
So don't give up hope. (And I believe that positive thinking helps, too.)
