my television schedule
May. 22nd, 2004 08:52 amThis is what I'll be watching next fall:
Monday: Las Vegas -- Fun show. Gorgeous cast. Decent acting. If they can stick to what they do well, and not get ahead of themselves, this show will be around for a while. I'm also not wild about how they bring in a big name star just about every episode, but whatever. Danny McCoy is my tv boyfriend.
Wednesday: Smallville and West Wing -- although I may wander away on both. I have a tendency to forget about Wednesday tv.
Sunday: Alias -- when it, you know, finally comes back on. January!?! Goodness.
Anything new I'll watch if I catch it and like it. I'm terrible at tv watching, so I basically have to trip over it.
What I won't be watching:
Reality TV. For all the good it'll do, which is nothing, I've decided to be contrary and stage a one person boycott. I know enough people in the industry and around town and such to know that the trend towards Reality TV is slowly squeezing the life out of Hollywood and the industry at a large. You want to know why there's no good tv shows left? Why genre TV seems to be on the out? Reality TV. It's not the only reason, but its a big one.

The same is true for me. I ranted about reality TV's ill effects on television programming quality a few months ago in my journal. I can say with complete assurance the total amount of reality TV that I've consumed, ever, is less than 45 minutes, and I haven't missed out on anything crucial in American culture.
Although I can't point the finger at anyone on the issue of comparative worthiness of media comsumption, I will say that I am very glad reality programming hasn't gotten its hooks into me. I know too many people that are addicted, and their whole week's activities are arranged around when a certain show (or three) is aired.

Date: 2004-05-23 02:47 am (UTC)I've caught a few episodes of one or two of them -- nothing to warrent any level of obsession. They never hold my interest and I always become disgusted. And no, you're not missing anything. What you are missing is a lesson in how frightening our modern day culture/society is like, but I'm sure you can see that elsewhere. ;)
And yeah, I've overheard more than one conversation about The Apprentice parties or Survivor parites. It's depressing.

Yes, this is true. The other television I don't like doesn't replace the stuff I do like because it's cheaper and easier to make.

Date: 2004-05-23 03:27 pm (UTC)I'm looking at the fall schedule and realizing that I will be watching ZERO TV shows.
Nothing looks interesting in the least.
Ralph and I have decided that we'll either read more, or that we should take the Homicide boxes off the shelf and watch those as if it were an ongoing series.

Date: 2004-05-23 06:33 pm (UTC)Yeah, thank GOD for dvd box sets. Quit frankly, I'm happy with closed canon shows and playing in familiar universes. I don't really need or want any new tv shows, but I am beginning to hate reality tv with a passion.
