Day 29 - Saddest character death

Copying killabeez, since I don't particularly have a current television obsession at the moment, I'll answer this question first.



I thought of this all day yesterday, trying to decide my answer. I even did a search online for that others thought of as sad character deaths and found this intriguing list. (Mrs. Landingham! That was indeed very sad, although I didn't actually care for Pres. Bartlet's rant) I did some more poking around the internet, and found 3 or 4 recurring mentions, namely:

1. The death of Buffy's mom
2. Dr. Greene's death on ER
3. Charlie Pace's death on Lost
4. Denny's death on Grey's Anatomy

The mention of Maude Flander's death on The Simpsons is interesting. I guess all of the Flanders, while constantly ridiculed, are essentially without a drop of meanness in them, so I can see how affecting that would be.

After considerable thought, here is my list:

5. Bunny, Laura Ingall's horse on Little House in the Prairie (omg, don't laugh at me, it was VERY SAD)
4. Matthew Cuthbert, Anne of Green Gables
3. Hugh Fitzcairn, Highlander
2. Ryan Chappelle, 24

and a tie between Michelle Dressler on 24 and Sonny Steelgrave on Wiseguy.

I always have such a kneejerk reaction to Mark Greene's death on ER. Mainly because I was cheering for him to die. That character had been so ruined by that time, at least for me...

Yeah, I'm with you. I stopped watching when I started hating him.

I think I hated him more for turning Elizabeth into a shrieking harpy than anything else. I kept watching because of Kerry and Elizabeth, but HATED every scene he was in.

For me it's Darius. I don't know if Duncan ever got over that grief and rage.

I think he did get over it, but it took a long time. I almost listed Darius for this meme but it's a gentler grief for me, maybe because of the extenuating circumstances regarding the death of the actor, I'm not sure.

I picked Buffy's mom too. As well as Tara's death. The top pick was Tessa's death on Highlander though.

The very first episode of Highlander I ever watched was the one in which Tessa dies, so, even though in retrospect after I had the proper context, her death was always a fact for me, and therefore I just never got that sad about it, even though I do think it is very sad.

You got it with Ryan Chappelle. It's not that I CARED that he died...it was the manner in which he died! I am still NOT over THAT. I still keep expecting him to come back...that it all must've been some elaborate ruse. Agreed, too about Michelle, and will add Tony Almeida's death too, even tho he came trundling back. And my numero uno saddest (never recovered) is also Sonny Steelgrave which is why I have, just in this past year (after being away from fandom far too long) written tons of new WG fixit fic (a lot is on my LJ.)

I'm still not recovered from Ryan Chappelle's death (or Sonny's for that matter...) Not only was it AGONIZING, it was just so sad. So so sad, he was trying to be brave and failing and even tried to do it himself and he couldn't, and jeez can anyone blame him, and then Jack always the strong one who gets the job done no matter the personal cost, and then he broke down afterwards. gah. O.O

Sonny's death is shocking and desperate and sad. It like an unhealed wound, too raw to close.

Michelle is one of my favorite female characters ever.

Ryan Chappelle, over the top. Too much. I still reel! My partner and I are waiting for the obligatory "24" nuthouse episode that MUST come for Jack after...well, after EVERYTHING. Maybe Tony can be hiding under the bed...
