Well, that was sort of standard fun Doctor Who-ness. Nothing to cry home about. Almost all to the good. It's really hard to be dissatisfied with pirates. I mean, PIRATES! There's truly never any bad there. In fact, there could have been more Pirate-iness and I wouldn't have complained. Much of what actually was said by way of plot made no sense but I didn't seem to mind, so whatever.

I spent much of the episode trying to place the main Pirate dude, (IMDb tells me his name is Avery - the pirate's name, I mean) who I knew I had seen elsewhere and I was fairly certain it was from an Austen film, and as it turns out he was Mr. Rushworth in Mansfield Park and Mr. Bennet in Lost in Austen. He was also the Prince Regent in the Beau Brummell film. So, there were a lot of somethings I knew him from. haha.

My one complaint, if I were going to complain about something, is watching CPR scene was painful, but DW isn't alone in this so I can hardly blame it (except for the cheap attempt at manipulating your audience - that I can blame the writer for, but honestly I didn't mind much since I knew Rory wasn't going to die, having been spoiled for that). Rory would totally be dead if someone actually gave him CPR like that. I mean, if they're going to go with the low tech version of saving someone's live while in this extremely high tech, miracle of a ship that really should have one heck of a sickbay not to mention at least a defibrillator or something, then a little veracity would have been nice.... at least tilt his head back, fer crying out loud.

In other news, I want to talk about Lost, which I finally finished. And also I've now read listened to all of Robert Parker's western books that began with Appaloosa and I want to talk about that. And now I've started the Little House in the Prairie books on CD (read by Cherry Jones!!!!! She's wonderful!!!! Yes, I need all those exclamation points) and I find it DEEPLY amusing that the Little House in the Prairie books and Appaloosa are roughly set at the same time. As is Deadwood. And, actually, most of the LHitP books are set in the Dakota territory on the other side of what would be the state of South Dakota from the town of Deadwood. The events of Deadwood and the years Laura Ingalls spent in DeSmet were about 10 years apart? Something like that. A very different view of the west. One wonders which was more accurate. LOL.

Incidentally, for you Everett Hitch and Virgil Cole fans out there, the books are read by Titus Welliver and he's really good! I totally recommend them, and they're not lengthy books, 5 CDs at most per book, so it's really easy listening. (If the name isn't familiar, you'd know his face. He had a role in Deadwood and was The Man In Black in Lost (Part of what I want to talk about re: Lost).

Somewhere in the middle of all that I listened to S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders and Rumble Fish, which, I never noticed before but then when I read it last I was 14, is written very much like a western.

Can you tell I'm having a bit of a YA books from my childhood renaissance? Annoyingly, it doesn't seem like the Oz Books are on CD. boo!

Also, can you tell I do a lot of driving?? lol

In other other news, today was TROTT USA's "Annual" Kentucky Derby fund raising event at the Santa Anita race track. And, I don't suppose anyone follows horse racing on my f-list, but the racing world had a bit of excitement today since a relative unknown and unexpected horse won the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Ninteen 3-year-olds! I love surprise upsets. haha. And I think TROTT made some money at our fundraiser, I'm hoping at least $10,000. We had a couple of "celebrities", but from what I could see it was really the racing fans that forked over most of the cash.

Was LHitP really set in South Dakota? I thought it was in Minnesota, and not just because of the TV show...

Some of it was Minnesota. The TV show is set in Walnut Grove which was Minnesota, I believe, but in reality the Ingalls didn't stay in Walnut Grove for very long. The latter part of the books was set in South Dakota (By The Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, These Happy Golden Years, The First Four Years). Laura and Almanzo later settled in Minnesota, though, for the rest of their lives, but it wasn't for a while.

I may have only read the early books then. It's been so long now, I honestly don't remember. Tho it might be fun to get them from the library and do a re-read...

Er, I take it back. Laura and Almanzo actually settled in Missouri. I get all those middle states confuzzled. LOL.

OMG -- I do not like listening to audio books, but I could definitely listen to Titus Welliver reading the Parker books. His voice is so sexy.

I did really enjoy them. Because of the way Parker writes, in that first person, dry sort of tone with a lot being said in as few words as possible, it was good to have someone like Titus read it.

Oh, I used to follow it HARDCORE until 2-3 years ago. I love the breeding on Animal Kingdom -- Leroidesanimaux out of an Acatenango mare. I just love seeing a nice stout horse like Acatenango in an American pedigree. And there's nothing like the top race in America being won by a horse with a Brazilian sire (with a French name) and a German broodmare sire. :D

I know, I really liked Animal Kingdom, too. And hope he continues to have a great career. It's a little difficult to forecast in general but in particular with 3-year-olds. They're still babies. But he ran a great race.

I loved the Appaloosa books -- I'm just sad there can't be more of them. (And damn, I wish the first movie had made more money, so we'd have gotten the next two.)

(And I just watched Who -- and you're right -- if that was the CPR that was supposed to save him, then Rory is dead for reals!)

The more I think about the CPR scene, the more annoyed I get. lol. It made no sense.

I also wish there were more Parker books, but at least we have what we have. And who knows, maybe because he liked the books so much, Ed Harris will make a second film even though the first one didn't make enough money. It'd be nice!

I loved all the books, but yes, the last one did end well. I liked how it came full circle but even so not everything was rosy and perfect. I really liked Pony and was very glad he did not die. lol.

The only terrible thing about that last book was the scene with the horses! I know they had no choice, but it was still very upsetting. :(

I can understand that. Titus doesn't read it too far from the way VM played Hitch, imo. Different timber to his voice, but same quiet steadiness. If you're referring to the Hitch in your head, though, can't help you there. LOL.
