My very profound thoughts here:

~ I thought it was a lot of fun. It was good to get back in the Star Wars universe again, most of which I've forgotten. Back when I cared about Star Wars there was really only the Zahn books, and now there's like a gazillion different things out there in this wide sprawling universe.

~ But I didn't actually hate the 3 prequels either. I get dirty looks from some of my friends when I say this, haha. I'm not saying they're good movies or anything, I just didn't hate them.

~ My reaction to TFA is pretty much the same, though. It is a better film, but for the most part I was underwhelmed with the story. The strength of the movie comes from the charismatic chemistry between Finn and Rey, and the generally excellent performances from the new cast members. Poe is great, too, and what we got of him was fantastic, but he's not in it as much.

~ I didn't much like the story line around Han Solo and Leia and their son, although I was fascinated by Adam Driver. I think Kylo Ren was ridiculous (in a mostly good way), but I found the performance really cool.

~ So, besides the force awakening on a macro level, clearly the title is in direct reference to the force awakening within Rey.

~ I'm amused by the mystery of her parentage. It seems it'd be too obvious for her to be Luke's kid. Anyway, I started thinking it'd be hilarious if she were like Palpatine's secret grandchild haha. But there seems to be a strong family inheritance in the Star Wars universe so I guess that would be out or she'd be evil. STILL. I am hoping she's like Darth Maul's kid, bucking family tradition.

~ Rey was really the only thing I truly loved in the film, and Finn, too, but mostly Rey. She was by far the more interesting story being told. The rest of it fell back on that annoying film habit of telling plot through battle scenes with not much space devoted to character development. Or continuity for that matter, but whatever. Like I said, I like these movies! I always have. I'm easy.

~ So, Iike, I know the run away slash pairing is Finn/Poe, and they are cute, but I feel like the flip side to that is Kylo Ren/Nux. hah. I'm mostly not joking! There is some serious undercurrent of jealously/attraction there! If I were into hate pairings I'd be all over that.

Before I even saw the movie, after it had only been out one day, I went to AO3 because I was curious to see what pairings people were writing. There were already like 45 Kylo Ren/Hux stories, more than any other pairing. So, you're not alone!

I don't pay enough attention to keep all the mythology of Star Wars straight, but I was wondering if Rey could be Obi-Wan's kid.

Oh. hah.

She must either be Luke's kid or Obi-wan's grand kid, or both. I think I read somewhere that Jedi are supposed to be celibate, though, so there would have to have been some breaking of vows. haha. Well, Anakin did it anyway, so why not others, but the whole mythology around the Jedis is kind of dumb imo.
