hafital: (24 - Jack and Tony K.I.S.S.I.N.G.)

I be watching TV and stuff. You know, I really enjoyed this past fall when I wasn't watching any broadcast/appointment TV at all; that was nice. I have such a love/hate relationship with my television, I cannot even tell you. Its this feeling that I'm chained to the whims of other people. :/ But *all* the shows I profess to watch returned from long hiatuses all at once. hrmph. Thank goodness Doctor Who is on hiatus. haha.

Stuff I'm watching, yay:

24: I'm high on the Jack/Tony love. Can't help it. We're only 5 hours in. Hold me? I forgot how hard it is to watch this show as it airs, waiting a whole week. I caved and started watching Day 1 again to get my fix, and omg Tony is so skinny and pissy, hee. Thankfully, I'm much less of a basketcase this season. Day 6 was painful, yo. With Day 7, I'm sure there are going to be some big blows -- I'm worried for all of them. I liked Agent Walker, but I'm sort of over her now, although I hope she doesn't die. Emerson/Tony/Jack looks very explody and the previews showed Tony needing to shoot Emerson who's got a gun on Jack. LOVE TRIANGLE. It's a bit early for Emerson to die but it doesn't look good. Where was Bill? I MISS BILL. I'm very worried over him and Chloe this season. I'm fairly certain the writers won't kill Tony after just bringing him back, but those two are vulnerable. meep. The torture thing continues to be ridiculous. WHATEVER. The day 24 handles a tough issue like that with actual clarity and honesty, is the day Jack Bauer decides to stay home and garden.

BSG: Ah yes, Battlestar Galactica. I did watch Sometimes a Great Notion and then remembered how unrelentingly dark and dismal and bleak and lack-of-hope this show is. It makes 24 look like sunshine and rainbows and puppy dogs frolicking with unicorns in comparison. I think it's pretty nifty keen that Ellen Tigh is a cylon. Nice loop back to that early episode -- and man, Baltar sure can keep things secret when he wants to. I had blocked Gaita's loss of his leg from my memory. :( Dualla's suicide was, I dunno, very sad and I was surprised, but also thought it was a bit manipulative, on a couple of levels. I was intrigued by the the final 5 cylons having lived on earth (and how creepy it is to walk past the place where you died) and then having in some way seeded humans -- I'm not understanding the genesis of it all. If all the people on "Earth" were cylons, did they predate or co-exist with "humans"? Are the cylons the creators of the humans? I had a hard time watching Admiral Adama lose his shit, and also President Roslin burning her bible. lordy, people. I can tell you I'm very glad this show is ending. And everyone keeps promising more death and darkness and bad times. jeezus.

Lost: OH GOOD GRIEF. Not another show that loops around with time and space. I can say this about Lost, the writers really know how to write episodes that are convoluted as hell. This is my theory: Richard has 4 toes per foot. There, that's it. *g* Okay, things really suck for those on the island. Not sure how everybody returning to the island is going to fix that, but that's what seems to need to happen, except for the fact that Ben Linus has to be the on to convince people of that when they hate his guts and don't trust him, rightfully so. JJ Abrams is doing this thing where we have to trust/like the man who previously was evil personified; I hate it when he does that. If Desmond needs to leave Penelope, I WILL NOT FORGIVE THE WRITERS. But then, Desmond is special, Farraday said so, so maybe he's the only one that can actually leave. Or else Penny better go with him, damn it. Whitmore/Linus: their love is so titanic. Sayid is HOT. Hurley's not doing so good. Sun is my hero, although I don't know what game she's playing. Kate is okay, I mean, I'd freak out, too, if lawyers showed up and demanded blood tests under the circumstances. Jack Sheppard is annoying and annoying again. I've long since stopped liking him and his monumental man pain. He's always wrong or doing something stupid and wrong, or making other people do stupid and wrong things. bah. I'm exhausted! lol.

Merlin: OH! So *here's* where all the sunshine and puppy dogs and unicorns and fairytales went to, quite literally. :D :D I've read so many versions of the Arthurian Legend, and this one is just as amusing. I recall reading one version that had 3 sisters for Arthur -- Morgana, Morgaine, and Morgaise, all at once. And another (possibly the same version? can't remember now) where he married twice, to two different Gwens -- Gwenever and Gweneviere. Some that play with the notion that Merlin lives his life going backward in time, one where he was married quite young to Nimue, and others with more magic, some with no magic, etc etc. I'm still fond of that King Arthur film, though that was probably the least Arthurian version of the legend. I missed out on the Giles band wagon, never being a fan of Buffy, so it's wonderful watching Anthony Head as Uthur. Uthur! The king everyone kind of hates but no one can deny he's a very good king. heh. The departures from the typical legend that I appreciate the most in his version are: Gwen! I'm so thrilled she's not a ninny, thank God. Morgana + Gwen -- GIRLS RULE. Uthur + Arthur -- I don't think I've ever read or seen a version of the story where Arthur was not orphaned at a young age. This is actually immensely significant, because who Arthur is as a king has always been largely shaped and determined by the fact that he never knew what/who he truly was until he came of age, but in Merlin that is not the case, and indeed, who he is in this version is pretty drastically shaped by Uthur, although Uthur can't seem to squash Arthur's inherent kindness. Uthur is many things, but he is not kind. Merlin + Arthur -- what I find interesting there, aside from how cute they are, is that both are in a place where they are still working toward becoming the men known in the legend, they are very proto-heroes. Or possibly anti-heroes in the case of Merlin. Stuff I dislike about Merlin: I do find the magic = evil kind of over done, to be honest. I wish they kept it magic = treacherous, which is what it actually is. It's also such a clean show *g*. Everyone is so immensely healthy-looking, with shiny clean hair and clean clothing. For the most part, the look of the show feels a bit like I'm watching a Disneyland stage show, but this I can work with *g*. I'm glad the show is coming back.

And a fannish round up isn't complete unless I talk a little bit about Highlander. Mother and I are still watching the DVDs. She's so much faster than I am, motoring right along and we're now on Season 5. I've forced her to wait to watch with me, because I want to be there when she watches the Horseman Arc. She already barreled through the end of S4, hrmph. So far, she likes Richie (oh dear...), has said Methos is cute and after watching Methos was like "oh he's more my type" (*facepalm*) although finds him a bit too cowardly (AHAHAHAHAAHAHA. *choke*), finds Duncan too broody (*snicker*) but still pretty to look at (well, duh... ), and kind of liked Cassandra (WHAT??). She still pronounced the "w" in "sword". Cracks me up.

I have to catch up on the Sarah Jane Adventures, and I'm very slowly watching Classic Doctor Who -- I'm still on the first Doctor, and just finished The Sensorites OMG, I love the Sensorites. When are they going to be on New Who?? They were hilarious.

I am NOT looking forward to the Torchwood mini-series. I'm debating whether to watch it at all. I may just thoroughly spoil myself and then decide after.

I just recently watched the new ITV version of Northanger Abbey and I adored it. Delightful! It's great to have a better version of that on film, finally. Catherine & Henry 4ever! The best part was the proposal -- one of the sweetest, loveliest, proposal scenes I've ever seen.

The ITV Sense & Sensibility was also rather well done -- not much can outshine the film of S&S, but this version had a great Elinor and a surprisingly lovely Edward. Also, this version has David Morrissey as Colonel Brandon -- NOTHING BAD THERE. He was great, lovely, gorgeous, and also, amusingly, far outshone the Willoughby they'd cast, who was kind of a ninny, in comparison, so it was hard to believe any red-blooded girl would choose that Willoughby over this Brandon. hah.

I also watched the ITV version of Mansfield Park which was, conversely, dreadful, despite Billie Piper being very sweet in it, and actually the Mary Crawford character was more interesting and nuanced than I had assumed it would be (she's usually portrayed in almost characiture-like two dimensions), but still, it sucked. Sigh. I wonder if there will ever be an adaptation of Mansfield Park that doesn't suck donkey balls. The theatrical film from a few years ago was so *immensely* out of character for Fanny, I can't really think of it as MP. The BBC version from the 80s is so dreadfully dull, it's like watching paint dry. bah.

I'm still rereading all of the Oz Books, and am almost done with the next batch of icons for The Marvelous Land of Oz, wheee. I'm rereading The Road to Oz right now, which I always loved although I can't help but find The Shaggy Man a bit creepy. I am bemoaning the lack of readily available fanfiction. I know there are tons of stuff published out there, but I don't have the kind of extra time and cash to hunt all that down. Also, I want fanfiction, the way it exists for all other fandoms, on the internet, with all sorts of pairings, and all sorts of ratings. I've read everything on the Yuletide archive, which is decidedly not enough. FF.net only has 17 stories. *pout*

ETA: I forgot Star Trek: The Next Generation -- I just watched Haven, with the first infamous meeting between Captain Picard and Luxana Troi. *g* HILARIOUS. Luxana Troi always made me uncomfortable because of the mother-embaresses-daughter thing, which was like my life growing up. *g* But, I think I'm going to like her a lot more this time around. Riker is a big nincompoop. Picard is gorgeous. Data is lovely. wheee!
