Do you know what it is that you do to me?
I don't know who you are,
Just a friend from another star.

--Lois Lane, Superman

My gym has these treadmills that have televisions attached to them, and on three separate channels they have a feed from dvd players and they show different movies at certain times of the day. I'm usually not there when they show them, but occasionally I am. Last week they were showing Superman, the original movie, which I haven't seen in a long time and it was like finding an old friend you've neglected. I'd forgotten about the poem Lois speaks during the flying sequence, and it made me think about how you wouldn't be able to get away with doing something like that in most films today. I'm quite amazed they had it in Superman to begin with, although it speaks accurately to the wonder of being in the presence of someone who is truly miraculous.

It's a little cheezy, but quite lovely.

And the helicopter rescue scene *still* gets me, all these years later.

I saw The Brother's Grimm this weekend, which I mostly liked, and some parts I liked quite a bit. I thought the narrative was a bit messy at the beginning, but it all came together quite nicely once the actual plot came forward.

At this rate, my stubborn persistence of disliking Matt Damon is going to be whittled away to nothing. *g* I thought he and Heath Ledger were a lot of fun, particularly Heath, but the both together worked really well. I love movies or stories with strong sibling relationships; they make me happy.

Monica Belluci doesn't appear to ever change. Really, she was the perfect choice for that role.

I am in my forth week of classes and, while I'm still getting a feel for the department and the program, I'm really enjoying it so far. It is interesting to be part of this group of people, all of whom are writers, but who are not particularly fannish in nature nor predominately female. It's an entirely different energy. :)

Aiee, that scene! "Can you read my mind?" Oh god, it is to shudder.

But wow, did I have a romantic fascination with that movie when I was nine. (:

*gloms you*

You are too young for Superman 1. *g* You know the one that always killed me was Superman 2, where he gives up his powers for her, and then gets beat up in the diner. Waaaa! My mom was a big sucker for the first movie, though.

I want to hear more about your classes. Wish I could be there! I'm starting to really miss my classes. Maybe in the spring.

Matt & Heath were rather adorable, weren't they? And you know why I love HL so much. Yep, it's the voice. Guh.

Hah! I may have been no more than 5 years old, but I vividly remember watching that movie in the movie theatres. And also missing a large chunch because one of my parents had to take me to the bathroom. *g*

Both Superman 1 and 2 have those gut wrenching moments in them. To this day I have a hard time with the scene where Lex gives Superman the necklace of kryptonite and he hasn't the strength to leave the pool, begging for Miss Tessmacher to help him. *shiver*

Oh man, I wish you could be there, too! It's weird, because it's really just writing. There's no other material. There's very little outside reading you need to do. It all comes from you. At least for most of these classes, anyway. There may be one or two classes where you might discuss literature or movies or something like that, but mostly, not. Mostly you just have to write. It's a little disconcerting at first. *g*

*hugs you!*

love,
h.
