Jeez there is so much I want to talk about but not enough brain or time!

I had a dentist appointment this morning, for which I was almost 30 minutes late for, but I have the best dentist and he didn't care that I was late and also got the cavity filling done in like 20 minutes. So I'm taking advantage of the fact I told work I wouldn't be in till 11:30 to sit peacefully at a coffee shop for a few before heading in.

Work has been super annoying the past few weeks, since before Spain and continuing on without any indication that it's going to stop annoying me. This is aggravating, not only because of the annoying, but also because a few months ago it was super quiet at work but I couldn't take proper advantage of that to work on book 2 or fan fiction, and now I'm loaded up with book 2 and fan fiction needs but sadly work is sucking the peace out of the day. Poor me.

My face feels funny.

A while back [personal profile] killabeez invited me to join her for HLWW, and I was like hell yeah. Leading up to the con, what with the craziness of work and trying to get a handle on this new novel that's kicking my ass, I was less enthusiastic about it, but still very much looking forward to hanging out with Killa! Boy am I glad she asked me. I'm sure I would have had no idea what I would have missed, but to think I wouldn't have shared in this final HLWW makes me sad for that person that doesn't exist lol.

I'm quick to say I am not much of an actor con person. Having worked in theatre/film/television industry since I was a wee lass, being around actors and production people is too much like work and usually works the opposite in terms of getting me excited and enthusiastic about a tv show or film or whatever -- usually I end up just cringing in a corner. I know how TV and movies work, I've known too many actors personally to get excited. But Highlander is special. The cast and crew are special. The fans are such dear dear friends. I am proud to be a HL fan and to have been (and continue to be) a part, however small or big, in this fandom. And always will be. :)

A few highlights for me:

~ Naturally getting to see the cast all together again was great. Personally, it was a delight to see Stan Kirsch, who was the only one of the cast I'd never seen before (well, besides the one time I'd seen him at the farmer's market next to my job haha). Stan was charming and surprisingly hilarious on stage. He's been in my thoughts a lot since Saturday, and I hope he's doing well.

~ Another unexpected delight was getting to meet Ken Gord and to talk to him several times over the weekend. I have to admit at the start of the weekend when I heard his name I only vaguely remembered it from the credits and that he was a producer on the series. He's got a great Canadian dry sense of humor.

~ Gettting to speak to Roberta Brown about Queen of Swords, a TV show that both Peter Wingfield and Valentine Pelka starred in not long after the end of HL. I loved that show, for many reasons. I told Roberta that I probably started watching it because of Peter, but the reason why I loved it was more for a chance to see Valentine Pelka actually get to act and be amazing. He drew me right in, and kept me there. Kronos is such a 2 dimensional character, there's nothing there (as written in the eps) for anyone to get a real sense of what a great and incredible actor Valentine Pelka is, other than he can carry Kronos's over the top dialogue without looking dumb. Roberta had nothing but wonderful things to say about Val and we both gushed about how great he is. The other reason I loved the show is it's one of the few, especially at the time, with a female latina in the lead. Anyway, Roberta and I also talked about the horses used in the QoS and other fun stuff. She was great, a real treat.

~ Getting to watch and look at Elizabeth Gracen. Honestly, I ended up mostly watching her on stage whenever she was there. She always had a beautiful smile and funny things to say, and seemed interested in everything that was going on at every moment. She soaked the whole weekend up. I managed to speak to her very briefly when I bought her book.

~ Getting to see Adrian in his natural element of ordering a lot of people around haha. He's a natural leader, that one. I bet he's a great dad.

~ ETA: Peter's son showed up for the performances, and he and Peter played guitar and Peter sang. It was cute. His son looks like a way more pretty version of Peter. PW is super handsome, especially getting all doctor hot now but his son looked like he could be starring in some young all boy band music group or something. I was so out of the loop of things, I had no idea Peter Wingfield decided to go back to school and become a real doctor! Good for him.

~ The love letter play that Adrian and Elizabeth wrote, and which Adrian directed. It was really amazing! And so well done. Not only was it well written, and in character!, but it was tense! I was at the edge of my seat! I was like, how is this going to end? What is going to happen???? AHHHHH. haha. They filmed it, and Adrian said they hope to make it available for the fans (he put the caveat that if the recording was useable etc), and I'm sure they will want to perform it again sometime hopefully. But on top of how good the darn thing was, my particular delight was seeing how both Adrian and Elizabeth, and Jim!, all sank right into the characters. Their acting was spot on. Particularly Adrian who is nothing like Duncan at all in his normal state. I was like, omg there's Duncan! Like, he just appeared!

~ The entire cast including Anthony Delongis and David A (sans Stan) also performed a 1/2 hour Radio play, live reading, written by friends of Elizabeth who put up a weekly radio show (and I think she performs on the show regularly). It was so delightful! A lot of fun. All of them were great. Peter looked like he was having a blast getting to act again. eta: I should add that the radio play wasn't HL, but original.

~F. Braun is also always a hoot. I've met him before, but this time I got to ask him about one of my favorite sword fights on the series, from the episode Shadows, where he plays the shadow dream person that fights Duncan in his dream. I learned that, typically when he choreographs fights, there's always an irregular rhythm which makes the fight more organic, but the fight scenes in Shadows were different because he's not a real villain but a dream one so F. Braun, who was the person under the hood, choreographed it so the Shadow fought on the beat. Which makes so much sense and largely why those fights with Duncan always stood out in my mind, and were particularly terrifying. In my head, I modeled my character Camilla's fighting in my story Missed Connections after the shadow from Shadows.

~ I know I'm missing other things I loved about the cast and crew and what I learned over the weekend, and if I remember, I'll post about it.

~A big highlight of the weekend for me was getting to spend so much time with [personal profile] killabeez who I can never get enough of. :) I'm always missing you, no matter if I just saw you! xo

~Last but definitely not least, probably the biggest highlight for me was getting to meet several people who write for [community profile] hlh_shortcuts or from LJ land -- [personal profile] mackiedockie, [personal profile] beeej, [personal profile] pat_t[personal profile] argentum_ls, [personal profile] adabsolutely. I might be missing someone. Getting to hang out with fans, especially those that you've known online, are the big reason why these cons are worth it, imo.

ack. I gotta go to work. :/
