Thor 3 rewatch
Nov. 17th, 2017 09:16 amGuys I might even go see Ragnarok a third time. WHAT. For the comfort, and the distraction. It's just ben soooo hectic over here. I've been fantasizing about that old 80s TV show Out of This World -- you know, the one with the girl who's dad's an alien (and each time I think about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 I think of this TV show haha) and her main power is that she touches her two fore fingers and can stop time. What I wouldn't do to stop time for little breaks!
Anyhoo, I posted the below on tumblr.

Went to see Thor Ragnarok again on Saturday and I still love it.
~ Loki-as-Odin is one of my favorite things in the movie. Especially when Thor asks him what he’s been doing the whole time and he says he’s had to go to “board meetings” and “security council meetings!” haha! Missed it on the first viewing. It’s like this is what Loki thinks kings do - go to a lot of meetings all the time.
~ Anthony Hopkins should do more comedy. His facial expressions when he’s Loki-as-Odin are solid gold. Who knew he could be so impish. Also, I want Loki to impersonate all of the Avengers, just so I can have the pleasure of seeing each of the actors act as Loki-as-them. Chris Evans has done it already, so now I just need the rest of them. Please and thank you.
~ Loved the parallel between the ‘play within aplay film’ which is fake and Loki-as-Odin which is also fake. It’s like no one in that scene is really themselves haha. (I forgot to mention the play within a play in my first post but of course I loved it, I mean who doesn’t love a good play within a play!) Also Luke Hemsworth does a very credible Thor, much more than Damon as Loki, which I found hilarious because there’s one actor really giving it his all and the other being very overly dramatic. How fitting!
~ I wonder who Hela’s mother is? Assuming she has a mother. Is it Frigga? If not, I would like to know more about her. Or I guess anything about her. Also, I wonder about Hela and Thor drawing their power from Asgard, and what that means for Thor now that Asgard - the physical place - has been destroyed.
~ Also love the parallel between Thor losing his hammer, and Steve giving up his shield. They should commiserate together. :D
~ This will only make sense to fans who know Highlander: The Series, but I look at Loki and I wonder -- is he Methos, or is he Kronos. I’m not into Thor/Loki as a slash pairing, but I love their brother struggle, the ‘push me pull me’ of it. If he’s the god of mischief, that makes him more like Methos, but he’s capable of genocide and has never shown true remorse for his actions, and that makes him more like Kronos. I love the flashes of complexity we see in Loki’s struggle (with himself, with Thor, with his father, his pain at the loss of his mother), but I don’t much have interest if his part to play is the angry bitter brother, foil for Thor. I’d pretty much washed my hands of the character but Ragnarok has breathed new life into him. There’s that great scene when Thor tricks him for a change, and Loki’s immobilized, and Thor tells him at one point he has to grow up, and then that equally great scene in the elevator when Thor says “you’re you and I’m me”. Anyway, this is a longwinded way of saying I like this Loki, the mobility of his character. It’s more interesting, and I love seeing the brother relationship mature and not be repetitive. I wonder though if Loki can feel remorse when it’s not for selfish gain. Like the scorpion, his own nature will always dominate probably.
~ Considering the whole viking/norse thing, the “we come from the land of the ice and snow” you’d think there would be more snow on Asgard, but the place looked like it’s 72 degrees fahrenheit all day every day.

This has nothing to do with Thor, but...

Date: 2017-11-17 08:39 pm (UTC)Ha ha ha I actually have notes for writing that story. I'm sure someone will beat me to it, though, just because I have so much writing on my plate I won't get to it for a bit.

Date: 2017-11-17 10:24 pm (UTC)In the first Thor movie, we saw Thor "grow up" (become less reflexively violent, and gain an appreciation for the merits of peace). In Thor Ragnarok, Hela refers to a similar transformation by Odin. So maaaaybe the possibility of a similar transformation for Loki is ... a possibility? I don't know if Marvel would ever really go that far, because a) Loki is a trickster god, that's his essence, don't mess with it! and b) if Loki "grows up" and becomes another white knight fighting for virtue, then you lose some of the dramatic conflict that drives the engine of Thor stories, and that's counterproductive if your purpose in life is to turn out more Thor stories for $$$.

Absolutely agree with you point b! Both your points. The distinction, in my opinion, is in keeping Loki in character while allowing him to change also. It's hard but not that hard as evidenced by Thor 3.
The label 'god' is bandied about a lot with these characters, but they are not literal gods. A 'god' in the mythologic/religious sense are static and unchanging, representing a greater concept, and are ultimately a dead end story wise. They're okay if you want a challenge or obstacles for your hero but as a main character you can't do anything with them unless you allow them the ability to change.
In the MCU, despite being called gods Thor and Loki are imperfect like every other superpowered being in the MCU. Even so, Hela is the goddess of death, Thor is the god of thunder, and Loki is the god of mischief. All very lofty titles but in reality death, thunder, and mischief are neither good nor evil. A real goddess of death couldn't be Hela. It's a sinister sounding title but death is a part of life. Hela is evil because of her choices (or maybe we can blame Odin's choices!) and she's so far down that path she couldn't or wouldn't turn back. Loki doesn't seem to be at the point of no return. Mischief is his superpower, he can use it for good or evil, but I think his real issue is that Loki wobbles between self interest and love.
