Well that was stressful! I was as unspoiled as one could possibly be going into this. x post to tumblr

WHOOPS sorry I apparently forgot how to cut tag. :/ *hides*

I knew the basic plot because duh, but I didn’t watch any of the trailers, and only saw a few still shots featuring beards and hair color changes, and some of the Wakanda battle, and one of little Gamora’s hand and Thanos, and one more of Steve fending off Thanos (right before he gets punched lol). And I managed to avoid reading anything about it. So go me! I don’t know, I prefer not really fretting about a thing before it happens.

On the whole, I kind of really liked this film? especially after I got over the beginning part that broke my heart. Anyway, I thought it was leaps and bounds better than AOU.

General Thoughts

~ Knowing that there would be 2 films, obviously we were gonna get a cliffhanger and it would suck. and yeah it did. ouch.

~ I’m heartbroken over Heimdall. :(

~ My thoughts, always, on any film that has Steve Rogers or Sam Wilson in it is that there wasn’t enough of either. And definitely not enough of them interacting together. I am perpetually starved.

~ BUT, on the other hand, there are two whole years of them fighting crime together between the end of CW and IW! That’s a gold mine right there.

~ And of course, fighting crime with Natasha! My original Team Cap! I love them. <3 <3 <3

~ The first time we see Steve! OHHHH. Just his silhouette! That was a great moment.

~ Speaking of Natasha, she was frankly stunning and amazing, and I love her. The End.

~ Hey we got a Steve/Bucky hug at least…. And Bucky is like smiling and stuff. I know that is poor consolation, but I’m reasonably certain neither Sam or Bucky are gone gone. Steve may still do something dumb (and terribly brave) that will get him killed but I’m rather resigned to that and unafraid of it at this point.

~ (as an aside, I LOVE that the Wakandans call Bucky White Wolf. That needs to be his new call name. No more Winter Soldier. He’s White Wolf now!)

~ Bucky <3 “One almost stable soldier” (or whatever that line was) I love that guy. I loved seeing him in this film. I loved his interactions with everyone. (haha him and Rocket! Don’t let him take your new cool arm Bucky!).

~ I was NOT prepared for seeing Sam Wilson turn to dust. Nope. ouch.

~And that was just after seeing Bucky go the same way. ouuuch.

~ I am a-okay with Barton being absent. I would not have dealt well with either his real or pretend death. I don’t need to see that. I assume half his family is gone now and I don’t think I could handle that either nope. I look forward to him being in the next film!

~ I also assumed Vision would not survive because, you know, he has an Infinity stone embedded in his forehead. That was pretty much a given. Since AOU I was like enjoy life while you can pal! But I did like how it was the final stone, and they left the window open for him to be remade somehow, and although I am not wild about Wanda/Vision (love Wanda; have mixed feelings on Vision) I wasn’t expecting to care as much as I did. And I did care! I cared a lot. I thought they were sweet and doomed and tragic. And then double tragic when she turned to dust at the end. jeez. Although at least they don’t have to be apart now. ouch again.

~ Heimdall. *cries*

~ I loved Loki in this, and sad as it was to see him get killed, he was so good in that scene. It was fascinating to see him with Thanos knowing their history. Kept looking for his tricks. I think he played his hand too quickly but I don’t know. Loki may be trickster enough not to be dead dead but if this is his end on film I can live with it even though it smarts. (way to make me finally love him in Ragnarok and then kill him, MCU! You jerks! lol).

~ Heimdell though, I don’t know, I don’t really want to think about Thor without Heimdall there to carry him home when he needs it. *cries more*. My one consolation is that both he and Loki died well.

~ in fact, the only thing I hated in this film is that in what appears to be moments (at most maybe it was a few days) after escaping Asgard as it goes down in flames, the Asgardian refugees are all killed. Thor says later in the film only half are killed, and I’m clinging to that, but it seemed like they all died. If I have one critique, it’s that. That’s a dirty trick to play on your audience. IMO. Because it kicks dirt on Thor Ragnarok, I frankly resent that. But… it happened first thing! So, I got over it.

~ (also, as an aside, I’m choosing to believe Valkyrie isn’t dead, but with the other half of the refugees, with Korg.)

~ Frankly, I was terrified when they revealed the Red Skull. I was like OH GOD NO I HAVE BEEN AFRAID OF THIS SINCE THE FIRST CAP FILM BECAUSE THE TESSERACT TRANSPORTED HIM BUT I BET HE’S NOT DEAD NO…. I’m not one to predict things, but I hope he stays working his new job as a Dementor forever. please and thank you.

~ I loved the random team ups. Thor and Rocket and Groot! (he took Groot as an elective haha!) The 2 Peters and Tony! Everyone else! Seeing Steve and Nat and Bucky lined up ready for battle was great <3. Watching Sam kick ass is always awesome.

~ (as another aside, I LOVED Tony and Peter Parker together. Every moment of it. Even the end when he’s holding Peter as he turns to dust. OUCH) (and oh jeez I just realized we don’t know if Pepper is dust or not? Oh Tony.)

~ Tony’s new suit is wow.

~ So, I actually think that all the people that “died” in the end are the ones that will live and all the ones that didn’t are the ones that are not going to survive the next film. :/ well some of them anyway.

~ however, with the time stone being an actual thing, and heck all the infinity stones really, all bets are off on any of these deaths, now or later, being permanent. I don’t even care if it’s lazy writing to reset that, I’d be okay with all the deaths being reversed.

~ And now about the plot… well, it was pretty straight forward. Thanos and his friends go around killing people until they get all the stones so he can manage the population growth of the universe.

~ (another aside, Thanos as a genocidal megalomaniac because he’s power hungry is one thing, but Thanos as a genocidal megalomaniac FANATIC with a CAUSE is a whole other thing. it adds a little dimension to him but at the same time I’m like whaaattttt)

~ (as another another aside, I kind of loved (does quick internet search) Ebony Maw and am a little sad he’s dead. As bad guys go, he was a lot more interesting than Thanos imo — although I do admit I liked Thanos as a villain a lot more than I thought I would, largely because he wasn’t 2 dimensional. Also the lady with the horns, she was cool)

~ So, Strange saw however million futures and only one of them results in them winning (or not so much winning as not dying). Then, he stops Thanos from killing Tony by giving Thanos the time stone. Clearly, Strange knew what he was doing — there is only one path, and that must be it. It’s a little obvious, but frankly I am kind of grateful because otherwise the ending of the film would be unbearable. Even guessing that most of those that “die” in any superhero film might come back because of the vagaries of superhero comic action films in general, I am grateful for the obviousness of the plot in this case.

~ Although I was worried what Thanos was gonna kill everyone, once he started collecting all the stones I was kind of into it. On one level anyway. I mean, I was curious! I wanted to see what would happen if you had all 6 stones! Some of that curiosity went away when it was revealed his reason was population control — that was both a turn in his character and also more horrible because you know, HALF of everyone dying and all, (and not so much just people dying because he wants the the stones.)

~ Thanos using that reality stone is hella disturbing like when he made Drax cubed or made Mantis all ribbon! yikes!

~ THOR. I love him. Forever and ever. He’s so heartbroken in this film, but still fighting, and he’s glorious as he’s doing it! That whole bit with the Guardians all immediately loving him (and Peter being jealous) is like the most accurate scene in all the mcu I swear. He seems a bit shell shocked at first, too numb to feel anything but then it’s really just a way for him to control his anger and rage. And then he goes to that dying star or whatever and he still doesn’t die out of shear stubbornness. He’s like, just a little singed— he’s really angry and I love it. He’s amazing when he’s angry. Poor guy can’t catch a break though. Maybe in the next film he’ll get to redo the last bit and go for Thanos’s head.

~ Although I sincerely hope that Nebula gets to be the one that kills Thanos. She might have to beat back Thor to do it, but she deserves to kill him imo.

~ I totally loved Dr. Strange. I can usually take or leave Benadryl Cumberbatch (haha thank you Sebastian for that), but I like Strange quite a bit. Anyway, he’s great in this. As he was in Thor Ragnarok too. He’s been far better in other films than in his own.

~ Bruce! Okay, I was really worried he would be Hulk forever (i love Hulk! But i love Bruce too!), and now we have the opposite problem lol. Honestly I think Hulk is hiding because of 2 things. 1), he couldn’t beat Thanos, and 2), he couldn’t save Valkyrie — or the Asgardians in general. :( I still say she’s not dead, but that’s what I kept thinking each time Bruce almost convinced him to come out but he’d cry out NOOOO instead. I loved Bruce’s attitude toward Hulk in this, a nice change from AOU. In all likelihood we won’t see Valkyrie again in the MCU unless they really do that all female film. So it can go either way with Hulk I guess for why he’s hiding. I want a Hulk/Valkyrie reunion. :( (and now that i’ve seen a bit more of the promo material in which Hulk is clearly present, I can only assume this hiding thing is a later change - hm what are you cooking up over there marvel)

~ You know, what first drew me into the MCU was Bruce/Tony, the whole science bros thing. That was put to bed with AOU. But I loved seeing them together again in this. <3

~ Speaking of reunions. The Bruce/Nat reunion was, as Sam said, awkward haha. Sigh. I both want to love that pairing and also dread it. Actually I can’t remember if Bruce survives at the end? I guess he must have.

~ Secretary Ross REALLY hates the Avengers doesn’t he? Whatever dude. I felt somewhat vindicated by Rhodey a) being his awesome self but also that clearly living in Ross’s Avenger’s world sucks balls and the Accords are not working. Maybe Ross is dust at the end but he probably isn’t because that would be too easy.

~ Speaking of Rhodey, he needs to get his eyes checked because he said Steve, Sam, and Nat looked terrible just when I was thinking how amazing they looked lol.

~ Steve and Thor’s little moment was small but yummy. More teasing! <3 Gah there was so little time for anything substantial outside of the plot.

~ I don’t really blame them for the lack of character interactions. Keeping all the different parts of this behemoth juggling as well as it did must have been a nightmare. Maybe there will be a little more space in the next film. I’m kind of two minds about it though. Like I said earlier about Steve and Sam, there’s never enough anyway so they may as well leave it to us to write it. And that way they mess it up less.

~ I never did get around to writing my thoughts on Black Panther, which I loved loved loved. It was great to see all the Black Panther characters again. I basically want M’Baku in every MCU film from now on please and thank you. Shuri is my fav, along with Okoye. EVERY scene with Okoye in Infinity War was SOLID GOLD. She’s awesome. She and M’Baku should just rule the world imo.

~ Also, I love Bucky in Wakanda. Starting with the end credit scene in Black Panther where clearly he’s all healed because as curious and mischievous as the children might be I do not think they would let small kids wake up a deadly triggery brainwashed assassin from sleep if he weren’t completely and 100% non-lethal. I want Bucky to have a home there always. It was a blink and you’ll miss it moment (they all were really) but it seems that he and T’Challa have a good friendship and I am ON BOARD for that pairing let me tell you.

~ The relationship between Gamora and Thanos was sad and creepy and twisted, as one would expect. It sucks that she’s dead, but then Quill is gone at the end, too. I assume they both will be back. I did love their moment on Knowhere. For a second I thought Thanos would spare Peter, but nope.

~ (my last aside for now — I expected Quill to make a joke that the head of the Celestial that makes up Knowhere could be like his uncle or cousin haha)

~ I think, like, my favorite infinity stone is maybe either the green one or the blue one? but I also kind of like the pretty purple one except we didn’t really see it get used like the others ones much except to like decimate the Asgardians so no actually I kind of hate that one boooo. the red one is terrifying. why didn’t the bad guy from TDW use it like thanos did instead of to just make a lot of dust and dirt storms?? the yellow one is kind of cool i guess but the golden amber one is waayy to costly.

I'm here via Destina's journal and I just want to say I loved the movie so it was really fun to read your review! :D I agree with basically everything here.

So, I actually think that all the people that “died” in the end are the ones that will live and all the ones that didn’t are the ones that are not going to survive the next film. :/ well some of them anyway.

Definitely this!
The original Avengers from the first movie are all up and kicking, which probably means major self-sacrifice in the future. I'm pretty confident Spidey and T'Challa can't be dead, which means Bucky, Sam and the rest also come back. It's the other people that I'm worried about.

Anyway, thanks for your long review, it's really interesting to see how people are reacting!

I really loved the movie too! It was genuinely entertaining, I enjoyed what it did, I felt like everyone got their moment to shine and it was very in character. The presumed dead scenario is one of my favourite tropes so the ending works for me too.

HEIMDALL! I too am kind of crushed about him. That was just such a sad death, and tho we know he went down fighting (as did Thor), we didn't get to SEE it. Sigh.

I'm on board for Bucky and T'Challa, too. Two years he's been there, healing and farming! I want stories, but you and I both know we're not getting any, and we're not getting Steve-and-Sam-fighting-crime-on-the-run stories, either, because fandom is...yeah.

Thor is my new fave. I'm still not sure how that happened. I don't know how I went from 'everyone in these movies is ugly' to 'DON'T KILL MY FAAAVES' but there it is.

All I'm going to say about the end of this movie is:
(a) Rewatch Guardians 2's end credits scenes.
(b) "Dead and recovering nicely" is a long standing staple of comics
(c) Wong is still alive and you don't want a pissed off Librarian coming after you.
