Happy Turkey Day!

Speaking as someone who, though I may not post often on DW, I never actually left, it's sort of wonderful how DW is the place everyone returns to when the other flashier fandom spaces become shaky or intolerable. Safe haven.
(not that I care to comment on EM or Twitter, but I keep thinking some other entity is going to sweep in and buy the site)
Anyway, it's Thanksgiving. I've been off work for the whole week! And what do I have to show for it??? Not much except that I HAVE cleaned my bedroom and vacuumed the apartment. This is after the Great Cricket Disaster of 2022.
I was minding my own business, rewatching Doctor Who seasons 1-4 the good years, as one does, when some cheeky bastard cricket started meandering up my wall, behind the television. Now, we get the occasional spider or stink bug that creeps in from our patio/sliding doors, but this is the first cricket we've seen after close to 4 years living here. I yell for my mom so she can come see. We panic. There's much commotion. I order her to go get a wide brim cup or something so I can capture the little dude and make him go outside. She comes back with a regular drinking glass. WIDE BRIM I yell at her. She goes away, back to the kitchen, and then returns with....a sauce pan. WHY DID YOU BRING A SAUCE PAN??? YOU SAID WIDE BRIM! I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN??? I gave up, she's no help. Jiminy is sauntering his way up my wall and soon he will be out of reach and then what are we going to do! So I use the glass and....I begged him not to move but he did and I ended up clipping him with the rim of the glass. I felt so bad. Poor Jiminy. Jiminy did not survive.
We are not particularly messy people, but I had gotten lazy and it had been some time since I properly dusted. Also, I had purposely gotten a TV stand that wasn't a block of drawers i never use but more low table so I could clean easily underneath but instead I let that area become cluttered with stuff. After Jiminy's untimely death, I removed everything and now it is SPOTLESS.
Next task is to make some kind of order of my closet, tackle the mountain of laundry, and get rid of all the clothes I no longer wear.
But, today is turkey day so I don't think I'll be getting much of anything done at all.
In other news I...
a) have started pilates again and loving it
b) am still horseback riding
c) am completely in love with Obi-Wan Kenobi <3
d) am still enjoying the MCU
e) started rewatching Doctor Who, which I bailed on sometime during Eleven's tenure. Beyond gifs, I've never even watched a clip of Twelve or Thirteen.
f) have a hybrid working schedule at work, 3 days in the office, 2 days working from home. Except for the commute, I prefer working from the office.
I also went to see Wakanda Forever -- I'm too lazy for in depth review, but I loved it. It was very sad, and it's like an almost 3 hour meditation on grief mixed with some cool costumes and cool new characters.
I was quite eager to meet Namor, and was overall very pleased with the mesoamerican depiction and storytelling. Namora was my favorite. I wished there was less fighting between Namor's people and Wakanda though. Glad we got some new information about Valentina. She is trouble! And I'm soooo thrilled that M'Baku is king. After losing Chadwick, I wanted M'Baku to be Black Panther. I knew it would go to Shuri, and I thought the story they told of her grief was excellent, actually, but I adore M'Baku and I wanted him to be King and Black Panther since we couldn't have Chadwick. At least he's king! yay! Was very sad about Romanda, and the scene between her and Okoye KILLED me. That was brutal. Nakia got to speak spanish <3. I was so thrilled for Lupita lol, I knew she was like OH YES I'M SPEAKING SPANISH! Little Toussaint was so dang cute. That smile! Loved Riri! Sign me up for the Riri/MJ/Ned trio at MIT movie we all want.
In other other news, I've also watched all of Andor.
The entire series was so good. Slow build but filled with such intriguing character development, subtle performances, the slow creeping dread of the empire, the COLDNESS of the universe...every scene is chilly and cold even on that resort planet, every episode you feel the closing bite of the empire squeezing the life out of everyone inch by agonizing inch. Every scene in that prison -- stark white and sterile and drenched with despair and strangulation. The disturbing hints about Mon Mothma's home life and the traditions of her people. Dedra's manner of walking, the way she looks at people, the way she speaks and cuts through crowds. Luthen's ruthlessness. The way Vel looks at Cinta and the way Cinta does not look at Vel...just wow. And then there's Andor, just trying to survive, trying to get out, trying to keep those he loves and find those he's lost. *weeps*
ETA:
petra called attention to my previous post commenting on the Kenobi series, and I realized I didn't comment here on the design and overall production aesthetic of Andor. In short, I still had problems with the costumes for the people on Ferrix, where I felt it was too...designed and weirdly matchy matchy. But everything about every scene on Coruscant, from the ISB to Mon Mothma's home, to Luthen's store was PERFECTION. Scenic design, costume design, lighting, cinematography. All of it. The clinical coldness of the ISB vs the beautiful coldness of Mon Mothma's home vs the chilling atmosphere in Luthen's store. I mean.... *chef's kiss*
I sometimes wonder why Star Wars is so popular. It's somehow supposed to be this franchise marketed for kids with fun cute droids, heroes and heroines, triumph over evil. And it is all those things and also so much more, mostly gut wrenching sadness that still clings to hope.
Anway, in other other other news, and gentler fandoms, I have my Highlander Shortcuts assignment. :D :D :D.....have I started writing??? Well, I've started thinking! That counts.

Date: 2022-11-25 08:17 pm (UTC)I think because it has a sense of hope triumphing over evil. Of goodness winning. Because in a grim, dark world, seeing that there are people who do the right thing and ultimately prevail is refreshing.

Date: 2022-11-26 07:29 pm (UTC)I liked Andor, but I didn't love it. I suspect I'll like the second season better. Agree tho about the perfection of everything Coruscant; I absolutely LOVE that world and love seeing more of it and all the parts of it, but also as you say, that they themed the design beautifully to lend to the atmosphere of the show itself.
