Clearly I am not going to do any kind of extensive Escapade con report, and I could pretend like I will, but I'd be lying, and really, it's been over a week now. *g*

So, quick and dirty con report:

Thursday: I sped like a little speed demon all the way from my class to the Escapade hotel, and I arrived very late (11pm) and promptly found my roommate [livejournal.com profile] melina123, as well as [livejournal.com profile] maygra, [livejournal.com profile] killabeez, [livejournal.com profile] taselby and [livejournal.com profile] soobunny. There were hugs. *g* I was a tad more hyper than I normally am, since a) I was *thrilled* to finally be there after a long day and was thus excited, and b) I had to sort of put on the brakes after go go going all day long. Everyone else was ready for bed, and with only a little bit of coaxing I crashed, too. (and I'd just like add that I managed to do EVERYTHING I had to for both school and work. Go me! Especially since no one else in my class finished their assignments. woo)

Friday: I woke up not too terribly late and Melina and I had breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] elynross. I then went to several panels, the only one of which I truly remember being the Highlander panel, which was lovely and focused on the enduring love of Highlander all of us HL fans have, and why we consider HL "home". I spoke up and said I considered HL my fannish "home" because I love the universe so much and because I adore both Duncan and Methos, reiterating my oft repeated statement that I can't be emotionally involved with a show if I a) don't find the universe and the show intriguing, exciting, and appealing and b)love all the characters, or at least the main characters/ensemble. After the panels were done, Melina, [livejournal.com profile] elynross, and Killa and I all went swimming in the super warm hotel pool, but it was even too cold for that and we ended up in the hottub. We were later joined by [livejournal.com profile] tazlet and someone else whose name I failed to get (you don't wear name tags in the pool!). There was much gabbering and general fannish talk, of which I remember very little. I think we watched Rome afterwards. Yay, Rome! And then there was Supernatural in Magyra's room and then Torvil & Dean in my room, to finish off the evening. :)

Saturday: I ate breakfast with people.... I can't remember who all was there. Lots, tho, I think. After breakfast there were more panels. The dealers room was open and so I spent some money on 1) a pair of socks that had bunnies on them, 2) a lovely pair of earrings, designed by the even lovelier[livejournal.com profile] devohoneybee, 3) a Wiseguy zine (and any of you who know me, know how significant that is since I *never* buy zines and hardly every read them even if I do happen to own them. The FWE are the only exceptions *g*). I went to a Rome panel and another Highlander panel, and BSG (or was that Sunday?), and... one or two meta panels (see what happens when I forget the program at home and I try and remember all by my onesies?) All of which were very interesting and fun and exciting and lively. The only ones I remember with any clarity were the fannish ones. *g* Oh! Except for the Post 9/11 panel, which was very very interesting, focusing on fandoms and tv shows and how they collectively and individually use or are affected by 9/11 in the shows and and stories. Tres interesting. Also, (see, it's all coming back to me) I went to the Slashing History panel, which was also a lot of fun. There was an interesting disagreement over whether slashing historical persons is RPS or not, when those historical persons are portrayed in a fictional story/show/movie -- like Byron in Highlander. Fun! The Highlander panel was focused on how stories in the fandom have changed since the early days, or rather how the aesthetic of writing has changed. I found myself (as usual) sort of straddling both sides, both in my writing and my opinion of the topic. I disagreed with the notion that the older writing was more "telling" and the newer stories more "showing". I just think the fandom has been around a long time, and just as an individual person's writing changes as they mature as a writer, so does a fandom.

There was a vid show, which was fun. Go here for a list of links to the vids themselves. After the vid show a bunch of us took over the bar area and made a con-size circle of chairs to chat. I got a little bit of [livejournal.com profile] rosawestphalen time and we chatted a bit, but it wasn't nearly enough. But that's typical of cons.

Sunday: There was breakfast. And more panels. I went to the "Absence of Color" panel, which was by far the most active and excited I got all weekend, and the most riled (mostly because there was so much to say and not enough time). *g* The discussion started with us listing characters of color on various tv shows, both based in reality and fantastical (i.e. Worf who is Klingon, but coded as black and portrayed by a black actor). We talked about how shows treat characters of color and well as how there is a very real dearth of stories in fandom with characters of color being one or both halves of a pairing. Some speculated that this is in part due to how these shows portray these characters to begin with, often pushing them off to the side, etc etc. There's no way I'm going to remember all the points made, and we really didn't have enough time to really get into the meat of the matter. The discussion was later picked up in the consuite where it continued for another couple of hours. Go here to download the handouts that [livejournal.com profile] coniraya and [livejournal.com profile] ladyjax prepared for the panel.

There was dinner and then we all piled into Maygra's and [livejournal.com profile] macgeorge1's room where a bunch of us watched many many many Highlander vids and walked down memory lane. Twas lots of fun, and it was nice to get to show the older vids to those who hadn't seen them, like [livejournal.com profile] unovis_lj. YAY Highlander! It was nice, since there wasn't a HL vid in the main vid show this year.

Monday: I stretched it as long as I could, but I had to leave and drive straight to work by 9:30/10am, so it was sad good-byes and lots of hugging. :(

(I think I'll talk about the BSG Paley Festival thing in another post.)

Hey, that's way more of a con report than I have any intention of doing. *g* And, waaaah! Why is the con gone? {{{{hugs you tight}}}}
