Holy fucking cow, people.
I have rarely laughed so hard while being in so much pain. My friend who I saw the movie with, was actually crying, tears down her face, she was laughing so hard. The ENTIRE AUDIENCE stomped and howled with both pain and laughter. And by pain I mean the kind of absolute disbelief at what you're watching, that makes you want to sink into a dark hole from being so embarrassed or shocked or ohmyGOD I can't believe he just did that!! The only thing that comes close is the UK The Office for pain/laughter. It was crude, wrong, embarrassing, hysterical, painful, surprisingly stark, disgusting, gross, waaay too far overboard while still being exactly what it should be. Sacha Baron Cohen is fearless. I'm surprised he wasn't beat up or killed while filming, but from the looks of it, it came close a couple of times. I also gather that most people didn't realize that Borat is a character, and not real. In fact, the whole film hinges on that. As Borat he has tapped into some of the more alarming aspects of this country. The movie isn't subtle AT ALL. People really thought he was from Kazakhstan.
He's also being sued by a couple of frat boys who appeared in the movie. Now, I can totally buy that SBC and company totally duped people into believing him, or manipulating things into appearing they way he wanted it for the film and the story he created, so if you want to sue over that, then, whatever, but since this isn't a documentary or a reality tv show, or anything but entertainment, I don't really care. It's not supposed to be a hard hitting journalist movie. It's some guy fucking with stupid people and doing a damn good job of it. I don't care who or what gave you alcohol or who or what told you lies that the film wasn't going to appear in America - does that change the fact that you a) made complete asses of yourselves on camera and b) are stupid, misogynist, young fucktards? It does not.
Do I recommend this movie? Only if you can stomach some pretty crazy shit. If you're one of those that has an embarrassment squick (and this movie even stretched me to my limit in terms of embarrassment, and I don't have this squick issue) then you probably won't last 5 minutes.

Date: 2006-11-13 12:18 am (UTC)Duuuude! The news things was awesome and was Chip Pickering the guy that ate the cheese? I continue to be in awe. I have not recovered. And I watched a significant portion of that film with my hands over my face.
(heeee. love your icon. Brian!)

Date: 2006-11-13 03:38 am (UTC)I did feel bad for the camp meeting guys, and the bed and breakfast couple. I loved the etiquette coach, who was totally unflappable.
Have you see any of his Ali G stuff? You can rent the DVD of the HBO or Showtime series he did - SO funny.
Hey frat boys? You don't wanna look dumb on video? DON'T SIGN A RELEASE FORM! I have NO sympathy.
If you ever get a chance to see "Taladega Nights", it's worth watching entirely for SBC as a gay French NASCAR driver.

Oh god now I feel stupid.
And kind of ripped off, in that I would have enjoyed the film SO MUCH MORE if I'd known that!
