So, for some unknown and dastardly reason, Netflix has (not once, but TWICE) jumped ahead on one of my queues and, instead of sending me the next disc (which always reads as available now, so I don't know what the issue is), jumps over all the discs of one tv show and sends me something from way down the line. This is so aggravating, when you're, like, in the middle of show! you don't want some other show's disc, you want the one you're watching, damn it. *GRRRR*
Anyway, I was expecting a Star Trek: Voyager disc (yes, still watching, still loving, and still ridiculously preoccupied with all things Star Trek. *LOVELOVELOVE*) and got disc 1 of season 1 Deadwood instead. I decided to watch it anyway, since a)I had planned on watching it eventually, just not, you know, right now and b) well, there is no b. I just figured, what the hell. It was there. Might as well watch, and although I prefer to watch things in sequence, whatever. *handwaves*
Of course, I loved it. The acting alone will keep me watching, not to mention the writing -- not so much the actual dialogue, but, like Rome, I'm intrigued with the historical/fictional plotting that's going on.
However, it rides very close to stepping over my tolerance for ugly (not just physically ugly, but *ugly*) characters, saying and doing ugly things, all the time, with very little to break up the ugly. The treatment of the prostitutes in particular. It's not the depiction of it that bothers me -- I appreciate the realism, and love the show for that. It's just hard to watch, over and over again. Recently, I've noticed my tolerance for this go down. It's not just Deadwood. Even BSG wears on me.
Seth Bullock is fascinating to watch because he moves oddly. Very interesting choice, the way he turns his head and how he walks. Might just be me that finds this odd (but fascinating!). Also, he's cute. And so is Sol. :D
I know the history of Bill Hickock and I'm *already* devastated. Two episodes in, and he's my favorite character. I'm going to be very sad.
And back to my regularly scheduled Star Trek. Deadwood to recommence soonish.
