Trust the Gene Genie.

Mayhaps I need a Life on Mars icon.
--That was a lot of fun and I'm eager to watch S2.
--Gosh, an actual honest-to-goodness slash pairing! Well blow me down. *snicker*
--Excepting, of course, that I think I may be just as happy with Sam/Annie as Sam/Gene. D'oh!
--I love Annie. Don't anyone say anything bad about her, please.
--I find myself inappropriately head over heals for Gene Hunt, in that way where I'm perfectly happy to never ever meet him in person ever but if I did I'd cower somewhere behind him and expect him to save me from the bad guys.
--Everyone should have a Jamaican bartender offer random but timely pearls of enigmatic wisdom.
--The little TV blonde girl with the clown doll scares the crap out of me.
--If I have a critique of the show is that a) it was a tad predicable here and there in the actual crime solving part of the story and b) a bit one note with the Sam vs Everyone Else at CID, but neither of these things bothered me all that much.
--So, was Sam's dad acting as those brothers (Gene) or was he more or less innocent and at wrong place at the wrong time (Sam)? The show didn't seem to clarify that, unless I missed something.
--I figured out pretty early on that the tragedy of it would be that Sam would not be able to change history but only that he would be faced with some distressing truth about his father, but I didn't twig to the girl in red being Annie until the reveal, so that was cool.
--In conclusion, trust the Gene Genie.

Date: 2008-10-21 08:26 pm (UTC)Vic was actually the Morton Bros.; Gene actually said, "Never crossed our minds that one man could be pretending to be two men." And he would've killed Sam, too, had Sam not unloaded the gun.
FWIW -- no spoilers -- but, as someone who adored S1, I sort of feel obliged to mention that I was really, seriously unhappy with S2, and with the exception of 2 eps, I really, really wish I hadn't watched it, because it almost killed my love for the show and characters. Thankfully, I can still happily revisit S1; K wasn't so lucky, unfortunately.

I got that. I guess I don't quite believe that a man who would be a criminal like Vic would then just dissapear entirely. In both timelines he disappears. The details get lost in the emotional conclusion, I suppose.

Date: 2008-10-21 11:32 pm (UTC)Yeah, I thought that too. If you tally up all the loose ends, it doesn't add up (if he is a rising criminal, why are his wife and kid still barely making ends meet? etc etc). I mean, this is just me on one viewing alone scratching me head, so I don't think I'm overthinking it (although definitely looking at it as a writer), but at the same time the show leaves open the question of whether or not what we see is real, a very nice example of an unreliable narrator, so, you know, the plot was not the point. The point is Sam and Sam's personal revelations and discoveries. Don't look over there! Look over here! *g*
er, okay, maybe I am overthinking it. haha.

That show's enough to make one's head spin, definitely!

Date: 2008-10-21 08:40 pm (UTC)I never did love Gene Hunt, but I appreciated the character as a great foil for Sam and a sort of personal representation of his culture shock. And yeah, if things got ugly I'd want to be behind him.
Annie is 100% awesome.

Date: 2008-10-21 09:22 pm (UTC)You're right, he does come up close to that stereotype. He's Magical Negro meets Huggy Bear from Starsky & Hutch. I loved the character, though. The stereotype would have been mitigated if he'd had other things to do.
