joy + sadness = "faint hope"
Oct. 16th, 2006 05:02 pmFor those of you interested in reading about the craft of writing and creating characters, I would like to recommend Jane Espenson's Blog. Jane used to write for Buffy as well as for a whole slew of other TV shows. The blog is of course focused on television writing, specifically, but I find it influential for all forms of writing. It's not only interesting and informative, but also entertaining. And she's lovely, so you should all read her. :)
One of the things she recently linked to that I wanted to pass on was an article about Scott McCloud's book Making Comics, which has this interesting section on how to draw and express different emotions in pictorial form. (towards the bottom) How cool is that? It's an entirely different way of thinking about a character's reactions and emotions and why they feel that way.
Anger + Sadness = Betrayal; Fear + Joy = Desperation. Gives me shivers! Jane is much more articulate than I am about how this might influence that writing urge.
