Still here. Still alive. School ended but I seem to be busier then ever. O.o But of course, busy with fluff and nonsense.
I'm looking forward to the end of the television season (gasp!) because then maybe I can catch up on things. Maybe.
This time last year I was getting ready to leave the country. I can't even imagine doing that now! It seems so fantastical. It's like, someone else did that. Not me.
God, I wish I had something interesting to report! So, I resort to television for substance.
Actually, the answer is simple: they share Manny Coto as one of their writer/producers. But, let's look a little deeper, shall we.
I zipped through season 3 of Star Trek: Enterprise fairly quickly, mostly because I'm anxious not to spend an eternity with this show. On the whole, I preferred seasons 1 and 2 over the 3rd season.
At the end of season 2, Earth is attacked and millions of people die. Season 3 starts with the crew of Enterprise charged with finding the race of aliens responsible, who happen to reside in a part of space riddled with space anomalies. Also, they have (a somewhat specious report) that the Xindi (the bad guys) are still planning on destroying earth entirely -- in part because they think that Humans will eventually destroy them. So, they decided to kill all Humans preemptively by building the ultimate weapon of mass destruction.
Ambitiously (and perhaps to their credit?) the writers and PTB of Enterprise then attempt to have one long arc over the entire season... just like 24.
Almost immediately, Archer resorts to extreme measures to get information, and continues to escalate on what he's willing to do to save Earth, even if it means destroying himself and sacrificing his humanity to do it... just like Jack! Only Archer is almost annoyingly vocal about his hard choices and he's about as far away from Jack Bauer as you could get, imo.
The more aggressive of the Xindi species' (there's five of them), the Reptilians, are almost entirely one shade of fanatical.... just like 24!
Because there are 5 species of Xindi, with 5 different somewhat distinct personalities, the Xindi have a lot of infighting and betrayal, backstabbing and distrust... just like the villains on 24.
Also, the Xindi are only the intermediary bad guys, conned into believing Humanity will destroy their world by the real bad guys, some sort of inter-dimensional androgynous beings... just like 24. Although, to be fair, there are never inter-dimensional bad guys on 24. That'd be weird.
Hoshi was kidnapped and tortured until she helped the Reptilian Xindi crack some code that would help them arm the big bad planet destroyer.... just like on 24.
In the 3rd season of Enterprise, just like on 24, there was a lot of go go go to get to one point in the plot, only to get to that point and realize that whatever they were looking for was destroyed or not there, or they had misinformation, and so the plot takes a sharp turn. And then another turn, etc etc. Until there's this big blow up, phaser fire fight and, at the end, Archer appears to have sacrificed himself and his killed. Only not.
T'Pol develops a drug habit. NEED I SAY MORE??
I'm not sure why this sort of format works really well, for me, on 24, and kind of just gets me aggravated on Enterprise. I think it has to do with the fact that Enterprise, at least during season 3, didn't feel like Star Trek to me. Season 1 and Season 2 felt like Star Trek to me; I'm hoping Season 4 goes back to some of the basic Star Trek type episodes and stuff. I mean, I don't watch Star Trek to be anything else then Star Trek -- Star Trek makes me happy. It's good for the soul. It's always done great, touching, even dark, actiony stories without losing what it was. The camp is part of its appeal, at least for me. I don't watch it to be like BSG or 24 or Lost, or anything. It's Star Trek!
Oh well. There were some standout episodes in season 3 of Enterprise.
popfantastic, I kind of understand now what you mean about the stench of Archer. I liked him pretty well in the first 2 seasons, but what they do with him in season 3 was just eye-rollingly painful at times.
24:
SOB!! OMG, they killed Milo. I'm devastated. Although I was kind of thinking he wouldn't make it through the season (I was fairly certain one of the CTU crowd would die, and I thought him the likeliest)
Man, I will miss his nose. :(
I've rarely known a show to make me change my opinions on characters more then 24 does. I still think V.P. Powers Boothe is scarySCARY, but gosh darn it if I'm not, like, actually more on his side of things at the moment. What, you say? I know! I don't know what it was. I still don't really trust him, at all, though... Also, with Doyle! They're really working hard to make me like him, gosh darn it.

Last week's put down of Jack by Heller was pretty harsh. Poor Jack. I loved the acting KS has done this year. In the scene with Heller, he showed with just a subtle change of facial expression, how Jack believes Heller when he says everything Jack touches dies. *wibble* I'm sorry about Audrey.
I was entirely distracted during the takeover of CTU by the EXTREME HOTNESS of the head bad guy. OMG. Wouldn't it be awesome if he turns out to come round to the good guys side? Man.
I hadn't been sure if Papa Bauer would return at all, but then, hello! There he was. And I began to suspect when we were suddenly with Marylin and Josh again. It makes me nervous, because, of all the people who could hurt Jack, I think Papa might be the worst of them. Not that he hasn't already done a lot of damage. meep. Papa Bauer and Cheng teaming up -- that's just bad news.
