Lulu is my new favorite word. Thank you Tim Gunn!

I indulged in a little retail therapy yesterday and bought two new tops and a new purse. woo. Of course, when I showed the purse to my co-horts here at work, they all laughed at me. They did! Because it's exactly like my other purse... But that's what I wanted. heh.

So, after all my talk about giving up on tv this season, I made an honest to goodness concerted effort to watch Friday Night Lights last night. Why? Three reasons:

1. It's on a Tuesday. I don't have class on Tuesdays (I don't take heads on Tuesdays... oops, sorry. little bit of HL slipping in. bwah!)

2. Even so, I probably wouldn't have bothered, but yesterday morning I heard an interview with the actor who plays the Coach, and I gotta say I was impressed. And it peaked my interest. Also, the interview made me realize that I should watch this show, vis a vis an original story of mine that I'm thinking of expanding for my thesis. So, I made sure I was home in time (just barely!).

3. I have a thing for sports films. It's like a formula that can't lose. You have instant tension, instant drama, and instant intense relationships. You have underdogs and winners. High hopes and devastating loses. Even the comedies get me going. It's not something I'm avid about, tho. I mean, I didn't see the movie of Friday Night Lights and I don't usually go crazy watching every sports-related thing out there. I'm a very casual sports fan - but I do love a good sports movie. :)

I thought it was very good. The main thing that pinged my interest about the show was the notion of this coach, which the actor talked about in the interview - how he researched about High School coaches, having this immense responsibility, this incredible stress. If he doesn't win, they get rid of him. That simple. But at the same time, he's kind of responsible for these boys, who are young still, and half-formed, but they have all this focus, of their entire town, on them, all this attention, and all these expectations thrust on them, but they also crave it. And they also have to work as a team, and learn what that means, and some of them are right there, and other's really struggle. It's the same kind of short-cut you see to intense relationships between cop partners and war buddies - people who otherwise might not like each other much but would give their life for their partners, platoon squad, or teammate.

The episode was well written and interestingly shot. I'm a bit over the jagged, edgy, rough style of edit so many of these shows use these days. It reminded me of BSG, but rather more intrusive. I think they can tone that down. I thought the acting was very good. Particularly with Mr. Coach and the young quarterback who got injured. Before his injury, during half-time, when he was talking about getting blitzed and unable to see, there was not a moment of that performance where I didn't believe 100%. Well done. I nearly cried when, after the boy is carted off the field, the replacement quarterback had to go out there with the other captains and all the panther captains held hands to meet the apposing captains. And I nearly cried a second time at the end when they all went ot the hospital and the coach's daughter goes up and hugs the young quarterback's girfriend, who's totally breaking down. So, generally, very good and I'm glad I watched. I'm going to try and keep watching.

I will be watching Lost tonight. :)
