torchwood companions

So I was going to do a little write up of my response to the yesterday's episode but then realized I was boring myself. *g* Let's just say I liked it more than I thought I would.
But, with Martha Jones on the show, I've been entertaining myself with wondering what each of the Torchwood team members would be like as a companion to the Doctor. :D
Captain Jack: This is, of course, canon, but, personally, I don't have much of a handle on their dynamic, possibly because there has always been a third (or more) with them and any time they were alone on screen was fraught with plot-filled tension. The Doctor, imo, has never been that warm to Jack, sort of reluctantly letting him stay, both as Nine and Ten, and then coming to accept him as Jack proved himself worthy or something. I know a lot of people slash them, but the pairing sort of weirds me out. I wouldn't mind a couple of episodes with just the Doctor and Jack, mostly so I could see if I can figure out their relationship. *g*
Ianto Jones: Okay. Seriously? I would probably just have one big smile the entire time Ianto and the Doctor were together in the same room for any length of time. However, they're like polar opposites in terms of their energy, to the extant that I'm not sure they would even be able to balance each other out. I get this mental picture of the Doctor doing twirls and waving his arms and hands around while Ianto just turned in a circle watching him, ducking as need be, lifting one eyebrow in concern. HEE. But, I do think Ianto would love the TARDIS and might actually bounce on his heels a bit trying to figure out all of its secrets.
Gwen Cooper: She'd probably argue with him a lot. Pre-Torchwood Gwen would have made an interesting companion, I think, eager for the adventure and also having the knowledge and experience of being a cop. It might have changed her, maybe allowed her to examine what it is she wants out of life. She has a bit of compassion, which is the only thing that kept me from giving up on her in S1, that balances out her moments of fucked-up ness, because imo, that girl's all over the place. She doesn't know what she wants, or if she does, she's lying to herself. Perhaps a spell with the Doctor would help, if only for her to get some perspective, but I'm not sure! *g* If she's really supposed to look like Gwyneth from the Unquiet Dead or some kind of descendant (and not just be an external casting thing) then that would be really interesting.
Toshiko Sato: I would pay money for Tosh to be the Doctor's companion if only to get her away from Torchwood which is like POISON to her (It's pretty much poison for all of them, if you want my opinion, but don't get me started). Like Ianto, she'd be in seventh heaven in the TARDIS but for more technological reasons. And I can just see her absorbing everything the Doctor spewed in one of his manic explanations of brilliance, and being able to keep up with him. She's already met him, anyway. :D
Owen Harper: I'm not sure if the Doctor would be freaked by Owen being dead or merely go, "Oh look, walking dead person." and move right along. I suspect the latter. *g* Owen's way too bitter for the Doctor, and I suspect he wouldn't have much patience for the Doctor's manic style of adventure. In turn, I doubt the Doctor would put up with Owen. Owen is similar to Jack in some ways, sans boyish charm and dazzling smile, but Jack obligingly and playfully changed his behavior with the Doctor, and I kinda doubt Owen would.
Rhys: :D :D Rhys for the win! He handled himself so well in Meat, I'm pretty sure he'd handle himself just fine with the Doctor. He'd be all wide-eyed wonder and probably do the whole "you're mad!" type of reaction, but one of the things I love about DW is that the companion's find hidden strengths they didn't know they had, they confront fears, they grow and change usually for the better, but you have to be open for that sort of thing, and I think Rhys would be, perhaps more than the others. :D I get this image of the Doctor ruffling Rhys hair a lot. heh.

I'd be with you on Tosh, but you know the Doctor would leave her after a while, because he leaves everyone after a while, so I'm not sure it'd be an improvement for her.

Date: 2008-02-28 10:24 pm (UTC)I would pay good money to see Rhys being a companion. Though if either Rhys or Gwen went, the Doctor would really have to get them back on time, or the other would be freaked out.

Date: 2008-02-28 11:23 pm (UTC):D probably. I suspect if either of them went, it would sort of mean their relationship was either over or on hold.
