I have some Pirate stories to recommend for any and all who might, in the slightest bit, be interested. If you enjoyed the movie and feel like reading, take a look!

Arrrr, matey. Here be Pirates )

Three posts in less than 24 hours! Man, look at me go. Someone hold me back.

This post has even less of a purpose than the previous one. I'm really just posting so that I can use the above subject line, which is a line of dialogue, quite possibly my favorite line of dialogue (at least right this minute). I'd offer something to the first person who guessed which film it's from, but that's hardly a challenge since I know that half of you know this film backwards and forwards. ;)

Was supposed to see Constantine again tonight with the 'rents but it never happened. Very sad. I've been thinking of that film ever since I saw it last week.

I have 4 stories to rec: 3 HL and 1 PotC:

When the King Enjoys His Own Again, by [livejournal.com profile] fabu. A lovely flash of Jack/Elizabeth.

Fishy, Fishy, Fishy, by [livejournal.com profile] unovis_lj. Written for the picture challenge thingie. This brilliant little piece does something most fanfics don't do, which is play with narrative and risky style choices. I love it. And it has Duncan, Amanda, and Methos in it.

Winter, by [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords. Also written for the picture challenge thingie. A look at a moment in Duncan's past.

The Tending, by MacNair. If you love Connor read this story. If you love Connor and Duncan, read this story. This story killed me. It just broke my heart. It's a sequel/companion piece to Seascapes, which I recced on my journal previously.

turnip!

hafital: (Default)

I'm feeling about as interesting as a cooked turnip these days. I'm hoping this will pass. :)

I saw Kill Bill V.2 )

I also watched Alias )

~~~~
Okay, how slow am I that I just now, after watching the HL episode Eye of the Beholder, realized that they actor who plays Gabriel Piton is the same guy who plays King Arthur in Excalibur? I can't believe I just now got that. That movie both terrified and fascinated me as a kid. I don't know what my parents were thinking letting me watch that so young. There was a time when I thought having a metal scull cap a la Merlin was soooo cooool. heh. But then the getting frozen in stone thing just freaked me out. And then there was the creepy little boy with the gold suit of armor that aged over night-- I just didn't know what to make of that.
Speaking of the legend of King Arthur, they showed the trailer for the upcoming movie when I went to see Kill Bill. I have high hopes for it, but King Arthur movies can go so disastrously wrong. The casting looks interesting, anyway.
~~~~

In case you haven't seen, Killa has written a new HL story! Any Road. This story breaks my heart, and I love her Methos in this so so much.

Or something. *g*

Everyone who loves Duncan and Connor should read this lovely, bittersweet story by MacNair. Thankful. I love Connor, I really do.

~~~
Okay, so I'm watching these episodes of MacGyver right (don't laugh at me! *g*) and I've watched like maybe 5/6 of them, and I'm quickly realizing that the man is bound and tied up at least once an episode. And the rest of the time he's bloodied and bruised, normally. Now, I've seen just about the entire series previously back when I was a kid and I'm just sort of having a moment over here realizing just how much fandom and fannish, ah, glasses (filter? understanding? perception? there's gotta be a better word for this), have altered my, um, awareness of such things. :) If you'd asked me as a kid why I liked MacGyver (or any of the other shows I watched) I doubt I would have said, "Well, he looks good bound and bloodied, you see."
*g* Ah, fandom. Always gifting in little ways. :)
Eta to fix various silly mistakes. That'll teach me to post when rushing and hiding from my boss!
1. School is chomping at my heels. Exams and papers looming. My first lab exam is this coming Monday and I'm about less than half prepared for it. *big eyes*.
2. Crash of Light, the last part of my Highlander series, which I affectionately call the Airport series but which actually has the lofty name of "So Tonight That I Might See" because of my Mazzy Star preoccupation, should be out sometime this week. It's lagging in beta because I'm tripping over some tricky dialogue. Hrrmph.
3. Since getting back from visiting the lovely [livejournal.com profile] killabeez I have been completely preoccupied with planning parts of my trip overseas. This preoccupation has superseded all other preoccupations. It's all I'm thinking and it's sort of driving me insane. *makes crazy insane face* Insane? you ask. Yes, because it's like a jigsaw puzzle where all the pieces sorta fit, but not quite. I can buy these types of tickets/passes/reservations but that means I can't do this trip/country/destination (and various incarnations of the above) coupled with limited funds and visiting family which means traveling on Christmas, which means a serious amount of problems finding things open and operating. Which also means not wanting to stay with family over New Year's (for various annoying and depressing reasons) which means traveling on or around New Year's which is a whole other set of puzzle pieces. See? Crazy insane. :)
4. I've missed the previous two weeks of episodes for "Las Vegas", but I did manage to record last night's episode. The show has this slightly absurd quality to it that I'm intrigued by. Mostly through the POV of the main protagonist, Danny McCoy, who seems to exist outside the absurdity but still moves within it. It's interesting, in a storytelling sort of way, because I can see it's a deliberate choice on the part of the writers and creative staff for the show.
5. The cute but sociopathic bad guy on "Alias" this Sunday played the cute but sociopathic bad guy in Charlie's Angels II. In case anyone cared or was wondering. The actor, who ever he is, is very good at playing cute but sociopathic. I was distracted throughout most of this weeks episode by my obsessing over my europe trip, but ... Read more... )
6. There's tons of Highlander activity going on and it's all making me very happy and ansty because I can't take the time out to participate. But it's fun reading the gazillion posts that keep landing in my inbox. Some of it is slightly irritating, but hey, whatever. I had curtailed my HL reading while writing and now I have a juicy backlog of stories to get too, and also my sojourn into M/f has yet to really happen. hmmmmm.
7. And finally, PotC recs! Of the Jack/Norrington variety.
I work right by the water front and even on calm days it's windy here. Today was a real struggle getting to work. :) The wind kept pushing me every which way. LOL. Nearly got swept off to sea. hee.
In class we're reading Freud's Dora: A Fragment of a Case of Hysteria which I found deeply disturbing for some reason, and so did the rest of my classmates. More so than the actual text warranted, in my opinion. The professor had a tough time getting us off our disgust of Freud and onto the actual critique and analysis of the text in the context of the class (which is focused on the fin-de-siecle Decadent movement). Anyway, I mention this because at the start of class while we were waiting for the professor to show up, we were all commiserating over our many issues with Freud and how we felt he (mis)handled that poor unfortunate "Dora" and someone brought of Jung and then someone else brought up the speculation some have over Freud and Jung's "relationship". And of course I'm thinking that's an RPS pairing that can just die die die. And *then* someone else brought up (I had no hand in this at all, I swear) Tolkien and C.S. Lewis! and their supposed "love affair"! Slash is taking over the world! LOL. Meanwhile, I'm having a tough time not snorting in laughter, and the true test came when someone then brought up Frodo/Sam and how, some say, theoretically, it's supposed to be a reflection on Tolkien/C.S. Lewis. *boggle* From Freud to LOTR Frodo/Sam in about 10 minutes. :) It was rather surreal.
Should someone from that class actually stumble onto this post: Howdy!
So, recs.
First, [livejournal.com profile] carenejeans has written a lovely Highlander piece called Twelve Kisses (A Baker's Dozen) which I enjoyed muchly. Yay for new HL writers! woo. I loved how this story is structured, how it carried you through their developing relationship.
Second, I'm terribly late with this and I'm sure everyone's read it already, but if you haven't I recommend [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63's X-Men story His Terrible Swift Sword. I don't read much in the X-Men fandom, but I have enjoyed the movies and I'd been hearing about this story all summer *g* and it was interesting to hear Yahtzee talk about it and stuff and I always admire an author who handles plot well. cutting away for possible spoilers )
It's Talk Like a Pirate day. Arrrr. So, I'm asking, anyone know of good Jack/Norrington?
Several things of passing interest, in no particular order:
--Well, blow me down, a Highlander rec, of sorts. Been doing some link checking for [livejournal.com profile] suzecarol, helping update the ROG-L links page and came cross In The Wind, a Homicide/Highlander story, which I read all the way through! There were a few things about her Methos I found out of character, but on the whole I liked it and I thought I'd share. Can't speak about the Homicide side, since I'm not that familiar with the show, but lack of knowledge didn't hinder reading, which is a good sign, I feel. It's not incredible, but there were elements I really liked.
--Connected to the above and as a direct result of said link checking, I find myself craving Methos/f fiction. Well, blow me down again! *g* It's all very new and strange. Actually, it isn't, 'cause I've always enjoyed well written gen/het, I just don't tend to seek it out. But now I'm asking if anyone has any good Methos/ofc recommendations? Anyone? Beuller? I'm about 90% sure I'm not going to find what I want, but hey.
--Despite slogging through some truly hideous fic sites out there and the discombobulated nature of the fandom at the moment, I am ridiculously fond of Highlander and Duncan and Methos. :) I want to hug it and squeeze it and pet it and tell it I love it and feed it....*ahem*
--I am only now reaching the half-way point in my current story. I feel like I've written a metric ton already. But I haven't. This is annoying. But, I think it's going well, so I suppose I must exercise patience. argh.
--I love the Star Energy commercial where the guy saves enough money from his utilities to buy a pony. And he brings it home to his apartment. And he calls him buddy. And he tries to teach him how to fetch. And the pony comes to him in the morning.
--I want a pony.
--Anyone out there wondering what the first one million digits of the square root of 3 is? 'Cause I know someone out there must just be dying to know. How about the first million digits of the square root of 6? 10? There's more, but I'll stop now.
--The Astronomy Picture of the Day is a favorite place to visit. Look how incredibly beautiful and strange our universe is! Look how awesome.
--I saw two movies last night that I highly recommend. The first was 28 Days Later, which freaked the hell out of me. And the second was City of God, a Brazilian movie about living in the slums of Rio De Janeiro, which taught me that gang warfare is the same no matter what the country, language, background, race, etc. Both movies play interestingly with narrative and story structure, as well employing different camera techniques with nifty editing. Both movies were extremely violent. Note to self: do not see two freaky, harsh, violent, and urban realistic movies in one night and then take the subway home alone at 1:00 am in the morning. Just, don't.
--Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth! Hope your day went well and you got lots of presents. :)
--New York will open it's first Gay High School in the fall. I have mixed feelings about this.
--And on that note, go Episcopal Church!! Very exciting news. I love and admire everything [livejournal.com profile] elynross had to say about it.
Ta da! Okay, if I don't do some writing tonight, I'm in deep doodoo.
eta: The HL story linked above isn't slash, just so everyone knows. Although if you spin real fast and blink while reading, it comes close. *g*
