So, JKR outs Dumbledore. Hah! Well, of course he is.

It seems people either crave all sorts of tidbits like this from the author or they gnash their teeth, call JKR names, and generally cry foul and wish she'd shut up. I... oh, what does it matter? But, of course, I loved these books just as they are, exactly as they are, and so I suppose I don't understand that sort of reaction and likely never will.

Although, truth be told, I've never understood getting upset at the artist or writers or the TPB for not going along with our wishes. I was never even upset at Chris Carter! I don't have any anger for George Lucas! So, you'll understand where I'm coming from. It's like being a back seat driver. I'm not driving! I can't control the car! So, if I don't like where it's going, for the love of Mike either deal or get out of the car so I don't have to hear complaining, but of course no one does get out of the car and so we're all smashed up in there together, with me plastered against the window... ahhahaha. okay, that's funny. *g*

That's probably an unpopular opinion.

I've been thinking. About a lot of things, so let's pick one, shall we? Strong female characters. Where are they and why aren't there more of them? What do I mean by "strong" anyway? I had more thinky thoughts about it, and then my work day got in the way. So annoying.

In my opinion, "strong" should encompass both "positive" and "negative" traits. I'm putting quotes around them, since I would rather not make a judgment on what any one person views as either positive or negative -- that's rather subjective. I love flawed characters, be they female or male, and think that sometimes a character's flaws are what makes that character strong. Currently, I've been focusing more and more on female characters, particularly with my original writing, and find that the more flawed they are, the more I love them. I find I want them to be spectacularly flawed.

Also, I feel the need to make a point, which is, I'm not interested in judging. That is, on judging a (female) character's actions as being right, or correct, or wrong, faulty, absurd, outrageous, exactly right, stupid, detrimental, hurting, or whatever. They could very well be those things, but I'm more interested in what those actions *say* about a character, rather than judging that character for being right or wrong. I'm trying to get at what defines a, in this case female, character as being that character, if that makes any sense.

(also, as an aside, neither am I interested in criticizing the writing behind these characters or the tv shows/movies/books. We can complain all day long about TPTB, or the writers of tv/movies/books, but, at the end of the day, we are not the one's driving the car, here, and what's on the screen or on the page is what we have to play with. Complaining about it, pointing it out, doesn't change it, imo.)

Anyway, I don't really have much of a point other than listing some female characters that I find fascinating, as much for their awesomeness as for their what might be viewed as their flaws.

There I was on my lunch break wandering around Barnes & Nobles, as I am wont to do, when, on my way down the escalator, I look down and over to the other side of the shop (it's all open in the middle) and what do I see but a man who looks like David Thewlis riding up the up escalator.

So, I'm there thinking, man, it's Remus! And I'm sort of happy and sad thinking of Remus Lupin. This lasts about a second, because while I'm still staring at this Thewlis-lookalike I realize, DUDE, it IS David Thewlis.

There was much internal squealing.

And we passed each other on the escalator. I was on my way out of the store and already late to return to work so I didn't let myself follow him around like a love-sick puppy. But it was a close thing. If nothing else, I would have wanted to hear him speak.

He looked totally delicious with scruffy hair and wearing glasses.

*sigh*

It's been nearly two weeks since I posted last, and feels like months, actually. School started up again yesterday. blerg. I'm alive. Writing. Broke 50,000 words, so yay. :D

The meme from my last post interests me, and, as an exercise, I'm going to do it for a few more fandoms. just 'cause. Highlander, Lost, and Wiseguy are already covered.

The questions:

01. The first character I first fell in love with
02. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
03. The character everyone else loves that I don't
04. The character I love that everyone else hates
05. The character I used to love but don't any longer
06. The character I would shag anytime
07. The character I'd want to be like
08. The character I'd slap
09. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I despise

I'm inclined not to complain about the new airport security measures, because, well, I'd rather be safe than sorry. However this is perhaps taking things too far.

I love my twisted, mixed up show. )

Half way through last night's episode of Lost I turned to my mother and predicted the the two possible endings to the episode. Mom is always amazed when I turn out to be correct.

Mother, I say, it's obvious! It's all set up, don't you see?! But she doesn't see, and it's really easy to impress her, which is a lot of fun. She thinks I'm super smart, which, you know, I am smart, but not necessarily super smart. *g*

Either because she was not raised on television like I was, or she never went to school specifically to learn how to see patterns in literature and how to deconstruct narratives and recognize themes and parallels and plots the way many of us have, it's all a big mystery to her. It's very cute, sometimes. Other times, it's a little frustrating, because I end up having to explain tv shows and movies to her, particularly those that are a bit more twisty than others.

Harry Potter is an excellent example. JK Rowling loves parallels and themes and foreshadowing and all sorts of good stuff like that, character foils, etc etc. Neither are the HP books particularly obtuse or difficult to follow. Everything is pretty much all there, ripe for the picking. Mom? Doesn't see any of it. When I talk to her about it and explain it, she gets it, but not on her own.

I suppose this is common enough, and it's just that, on a day to day basis, I tend to hang around people who all, more or less, see the same way I do. And then there are the days when things fly totally over my head and I have to have everything spelled out, twice, before I can even pretend get it. heh. :-)
